I adore Volvos. They are superbly practical, especially the estates, and as you say really well made. I have owned cars for more than 50 years now. The car that I kept the longest and enjoyed the most was a 760 Turbo Estate. I covered more than 200,000 miles in mine, towed a very large boat with it over long distances, had wonderful family holidays using it, and it was my daily driver for many years. It was fast, very comfortable, very reliable, and it never rusted. The UK puts down huge quantities of salt in Winter but it made no difference to the body or underbody. A great car. Just like all the Volvos of its era.
Didn't know much about Volvos until I bought a 360GLE for £200. Did 30k in 6 months and all it needed was a speedo cable and wheel bearings. Such a dependable old tank. I loved the steel girders that they bolted in all the panels to increase the strength.
i have a 340 1.4, sadly not a redblock but ive put 12k miles on it in the 9 months ive owned it. So far, 0 breakdowns or major issues... all its needed is a new starter, it just keeps going haha
My father had a couple of this model, transit smashed into the back, transit front was wrecked, radiator the lot, the bumper on his car took it like a champ, hardly a mark, tank is the correct term, cheers for posting🏴
Old Volvos like this are my favourite classic cars! Couple of years ago i saved a 244DL -79 from abandon farm. But it need some serious work to get back on the road... My daily drive is 940 GLE turbodiesel automatic, 663k km on the clock and still going strong.
Brilliant video. I think we have the same taste in cars. I love older cars and the way they drive. You're driving them and feeling them. New cars are boring. Keep on doing what you're doing. I love all the videos you're uploading. 😅
You certainly understood that Volvo they are legends and I have very fond memories of travelling many miles in mine sometimes towing my home behind me.
Hey Seppo. Great to see another volvo on the channel. I remember watching your videos from few years ago when you did repairs on 244 and dreaming of owning one. Now I enjoy my own 240 estate for almost 3 years! Such a great car for so many levels!
My 1980 244 2.1l (fuel injected 4-speed/od) returned 22mpg / 9.3km/l on a 5,000 km road trip. Around town it's closer to 6-7 km/l. Have been driving if for 7 years and couldn't agree more with the sentiment.
Im working at a Volvo garage with a focus on the youngtimers and oldtimers and I must say that this generation of volvos are very nice to work on and also to drive. there's just something different about them. Very good engineering and also very pleasant to work on. Enjoy your time working on and driving this fine specimen! Cheers
In '79 when I was 16 I remember sending off a little coupon from a newspaper to get the brochure for this car range. We didn't have a dealership in our town (Derry, N.I), and this has been on my "to get" list since, just below the Saab 900! My passion for Italian stuff has always got in the way, now that I recently bought my first ever BMW a Volvo or Saab may still happen.
We had the estate version in cream and a brown material roof 1979 T reg. Then a 240DL estate in signal red, 740GL signal red and finally a 940 Classic CD 2.3LPT. All cars have been amazing and strong and are such a noy to drive and behold. So solid in their construction. Enjoy.
The perfect daily classic. A friend ran a 144 some years ago. He only gave it up when a rubbish truck rammed it into a walk. We both cried a bit when we saw it. Luckily nobody was in it at the time.
I´m the biggest Citroën fanboy ever. But I definitely have a soft spot for these. Being a kid of the early seventies in Gothenburg Sweden probably has something to do about it. Dad always drove Volvos and my first several cars (before discovering Citroën) was a lot of 240 and 260´s. In the summer my daily driver is a 1990 245GL and in the winter a 1993 945 with 560000km on the clock. Both runs great of course. The biggest problem is that it´s always boring stuff when they go wrong. Brakes, exhaust, bushings and similar "beater faults". But to be fair, that´s the kind of problems you get on new cars too after some years on the road, so I guess it´s a good thing. About the lack of performance and high consumption. That´s unfortunately the nature of a B21A with the 3 speed BW55. The biggest difference between 240´s is when they get the low friction B230F with LH Jetronic. It´s surprisingly "fast" and I have no problem doing 10km on 7-8 liters of petrol. It´s a manual of course. Not even the modern 4-speed Aisin box can give an automatic 240 power and good mileage. So try to find an as late as possible 240 with a manual gearbox and you have the best 240 there is for daily driving. Pro tip: 1988B and onwards gets the newer LH 2.4 Jetronic and that has built-in OBD in the shape of a box under the hood with buttons and lights. Very nice thing to have.
I'm now an owner of a V70 2.5T Aut. It's comfortable, quick, and keen on petrol. It works well. The other Volvos (240s) I've driven have been sluggish, have had bad tracking or bad shock absorbers, and the engines have sounded as offering twice the power than was available, causing bitch-stop. Though, the 340 DL 1.4 was more powerful than it sounded. (And I miss my BX 16 TRS.)
I have an old Renault that runs a Volvo derived petrol engine - it is the most reliable car I have ever stumbled across. Unlike the Volvo versions - lol - the Renault is amazingly economical on fuel. It starts & runs like a Swiss watch. Had several old-skool Volvos - love them to bits, but damn they adore fuel.
A classic volvo was something that used to be a common sight here in the UK, with the joke being that if they crashed into something, they'd come out of it without a scratch, but leaving a volvo-shaped hole behind, but I wouldn't like to test that claim... :P
I had a 245 the best car I ever had. I can’t remember the year but it had round headlights. As far as I can remember the MPG is about right, that’s why I don’t have one now
much better than any car produced today, I've driven 240 for decades and i'm truly disappointed of the Volvo produced now, they completely changed their mind and their design teams and it is not for the best.
You talk about driving this Volvo to south of France. Friend of mine actually does that every several months. In a 245gl, 2.3 automatic (he also owns a 480 Turbo…..) 😂
My early 70s 144 saved my life in a 5x rollover ,T-boned by a double tractor trailer at high speeds. I understand it was the last year for a double roll bar in roof. Five Volvos later I drive an ‘88 240 DL with only 230K km. She came straight from Sweden factory to Vancouver Island so no rust.
I moved down to Cornwall from London in a wine red estate, it was amazing how much you could get into one of them old beasties, only downside is the exhaust rear fell off on the way so it became like a locomotive and had to drive with windows open because of the fumes wafting in. Sadly had to let it go and a nice chap straight swapped it with me for his Austin Montego 2.0 HLS which was an amazing car, very strong and capable and a pleasure to drive and cheap to fuel unlike the Volvo which was a thirsty girl.
About the Apple or Android connectivity, you can buy reversing cameras that have that functionality and they can be easily installed. They work as dash cams, reversing cams, hands free kit, mp3 player, internet radio and sat nav. I did that on my Dacia Lodgy and it really upgraded the car.
I've got a 1991 240 with a 940 turbo engine in it, in 10 years it has failed twice, once when the air mass meter broke, the car still ran and got me home. the second time was when the rotor arm split in half, it was a cheap aftermarket part, I taped it back together with insulation tape and drove 30 miles home.
That is a beautiful example of 240D. I'm looking forward to seeing the next video on it. That road you are on is something else. Do you check the tide tables before you go on it? In a heavy storm it looks like you can get blown off into the sea.
Looking forward to seeing my 1985 244 tomorrow. Its in storage over the winter. Only a couple of months and i can take it out and cruise around on Sjælland
Hej Seaside. Jeg har selv en volvo 245 gl 2,1 fra 84'. Hvis du er til lidt nostalgi, så er der en gammel svensk undervisnings video her på tuben. Den hedder Zenith Stromberg 175cd2se karburator.
The Volvo 240 and the Citroën CX are both great cars but it hard to imagine two cars beeing more different. What they have in common though is that they are both very well engineered but based on very different ”ethos” on what makes a great car. My first car was a Volvo 142 and my second was a Citroën CX 2400 Gti. I still have the latter.
Back in the 1980s I owned a 245 estate and it too had an automatic. To be honest Seppo, my memory seems to recall that on the occasions when I bothered to work out the mpg I rarely did better than about 20 mpg. Probably it’s average was around 18, so perhaps that saloon isn’t doing too badly.
I always fancied one of the V6's despite the engine being slammed by mechanics worldwide as being a bad motor, think someone at Haynes said off record "don't touch a THING!" on the Renault V6 as all you had to do was give it a bad look and it would start dropping its wet liners and then only if you were lucky hehe It peeved me that only the US got the fantastic coupe, 2 door and shaped rear roof line, Volvo really missed out on sales there.
I'd love to see a 480 turbo on the channel, such a different design from the other vehicles Volvo were manufacturing at the time, plus pop up's! I'm m not sure about the mechanicals, but i know the electrical system would keep you busy if you like tinkering. All you gotta do is find one!
Great car. Love the interior, which looks in great shape. At 2:40 the engine didn't seem to be idling very smoothly. Sounded kind of tappety too, though that might just be the microphone. Btw your mpg figures are for US mpg. In Imperial, 6 - 8 km/l would be 17 - 22.5 mpg. Still a bit on the low side.
I guess it having the carburetor bs. Bosch K-Jetronic there is no catalyst? If there was it could be plugged. Cam timing if someone didn’t get the timing belt on correctly. 2.1L with a carb has got to be pretty gutless.
Lovely car that is. And the blue seats too, what more could you want. You really can't beat a Volvo for an all round car.
I adore Volvos. They are superbly practical, especially the estates, and as you say really well made.

“The perfect car for hauling a dead body into the forest…or to go shopping” 🤣
Oh man, so good!
Just what we usually do on a daily basis. 😂😂
A test Top Gear missed

The fact that the dash doesn't seem to have cracks is even more amazing than the low mileage, especially given the age.

Beautiful car, the models with the small square headlights are pretty scarce now.
I love these old Volvo's. I owned a 1974 Volvo 144DL as my first car. I wish I still had it.
That was my first car. I’d gladly get another over a new car any day.

I will! It takes care of the driver AND the mechanic!
How are you getting on with with the huge reliability and recalls issues since they became geely and Chinese junk?
Awesome, I'm surprised you don't have a few of them 2x242's, a ls 6.0 245 and now a 745 turbo added to the mix!
The Saab is your need for swede !
So true about estates being usable / practical! I never understood why anybody would buy a sedan..
More Volvo's please! 😃👍
