It's technically legal in Japan so to them, it's ok to talk about it.
Personally I think it's better to be open about such things and to have proper regulation, protection, and management, rather than just "banning" without actual reinforcement, and leaving underground businesses to fend for themselves, which is dangerous for the society.

I agree 100%, I'm a fellow trans guy and what mainly made me lose inspiration on going to Japan was if I'd be treated weird, but now I know it isn't like that in most places, especially in Ni-Chome, so it is def in my top places to visit in Japan!
Shinjuku Nichome has changed a bit since I was there 1969-1972. There were just a few gay bars back then. The ones I remember are Shire, Regent, Sazai, Mako and 995. These were known as gaisen (foreigner) bars where foreigners who liked Japanese and Japanese who liked foreigners would go. I doubt any of them still exist. Back then the gay bars were very formal. If someone liked you they would send you a drink to show their interest. There were no gay discos back then but there was a dance bar that sort of turned gay after midnight. Interesting time to be gay in Japan.

@@TokyoBTM While I was in Japan I had a Japanese boyfriend. His name was Yoshiyuki Katagiri. He was the first man I ever had a physical and emotional relationship with. He was my first love.

Thanks for the sweet comment. In Japan, it is very easy to avoid shellfish and peanuts, they aren't everywhere. Especially japanese traditional food usually don't include them. 🤗 Please visit japan sometime, after living here for so many years, we are still in love with Japan.

A couple of years ago, we did an organized tour of Japan with a german student travel organisation. Our party of 12 consisted of 3 gays and 2 lesbians. One of the gay guys had a Spartacus Gay Guide with him and one evening in Tokyo we decided to find some gay bars. Even though or tour guide acompanied us, we still had a hard time finding the places, because of the japanese adress system. And if you are familiar with Spartacus, it won't surprise you that the few we did find, had gone out of business in the meantime or were straight bars by now. :-) Anyways, we finally found a place somewhere in Shinjuku Nichome, in a quiet sidestreet. It was a nice little bar, with standing tables set out on the boardwalk and even in the street I think (there was no traffic at all) with loud music playing and mostly men standing around, talking and drinking. The front wall of the bar was pushed aside, so even the inside was partially outside. I then realized that I hadn't seen any regular bars with patrons standing outside, something which is quite standard in most of Europe I think.

@@TokyoBTM Our visit was in October 2005, so the memory is a bit hazy and I don't remember the Torii, but it could very well have been the place, it fits the description with the standing tables and then sliding wall. Looking at it on Google Streetview, the surroundings look familiar as well, but then, many sidestreets in Tokyo or many big cities in Japan look similiar to a Tourist. Very cool, though!

So thats whats in Nichme. I was really young back then when I passed the district, and i thought nichome was like a cruising place for gay, you know, like sauna, steamroom, darkroom, where the hot stuff happen to you, that kind of thing. But its actually just bars to hang out with.😂
some people also told me the same thing. Some people refer Nichome as "a scary place". But mostly just bars, clubs and restaurants.

I worked for a japanese company for 3 years. They really were serious looking for employees based on blood types. I guess it's a thing for Japanese people on blood types.
