I wouldnt do any hard hitting with the sheath if i were you. Sheaths of Filipino blades are sometimes designed to split open. It doesnt mean its substandard or anything. Its an added feature from old swordsmiths when incase the wielder has no time to draw his sword. He can always strike the opponent while its sheathed, sheath breaks open, and now you have a bare blade :)

+Diegoveloso3 Good point, especially since TFW purposely uses light wood for their scabbards. They're not Ironwood like some companies use, but I'd rather they spend all their $ on the sword itself. Also, I hear that leather sheaths will eventually ruin your blade. In fact, I remember my father having an old knife that sat in the garage in its leather mini-sheath, and it a lot of surface rust on it. Beside, I bet that they're easy to repair, assuming that the 2 sides separated evenly.

+Jaime Flor I think that is partly why the British sometimes has steel sheaths for there late 17th and 18th century swords (The British where also in India around the time so humid climate - not unlike the Philippines). Less likely to rust when not in use and the sheath its self becomes much more durable as a weapon. perhaps a custom steel sheath could be made for blades like this?

If your going to use the Saya as a weapon like what you said. Hold the Saya the other way and use finger grooves for impact point. It hurts more, I tried it on my friend.

+tehBar0n That's a good deal, was it advertised online, or did you contact them? I wouldn't mind buying a used sword. By the way, thanks for showing off your Sansibar 1. It's a lot cooler than I originally thought. As for the saran wrap, & the oil, their new swords are delivered that way to, as a precaution. That way, when it's being delivered, it lessens the chance that the blade makes contact with anything that might start the rusting process. Anyhow, the blade kind of reminds me of my Ginunting's blade, which is also very light. The handle of the Ginunting, like the wooden scabbards, has 3-4 finger grooves on it, so it feels great to hold. Although, wearing gloves is a good idea. I'll have to keep an eye out for a good pair. My Minasbad, which is the 1st sword that I bought from TFW, has a smooth handle, so wearing a glove when I practice with it might be nice. Although, like your Sansibar 1, it does have some type of animal, or chimera's head on the bottom of the handle, so I've never lost my grip on it. Anyhow, the Minasbad was created in Bicol, which is where my father's family is from, so it's nice to have a sword that my ancestors would be familiar with.

+tehBar0n Right on, I liked the TFW F.B. page a few months ago, when I was hoping to get a Balisong from them, because I never liked the American versions. Anyhow, I think he's still waiting for a batch to arrive from his Panday (Blacksmith) in the Philippines. Anyhow, I took advantage of a similar deal from Cold Steel. A lot of their 2015 weapons are on sale, but 2 swords are on clearance, their Chinese Sword Breaker, & their Talwar. In fact, it's still going on 'til the end of this month. Mine has a flaw, or 2, but it's still a cool sword. I like the concept, & it makes an interesting sound when the it's swung, and the blade manipulates the air. Anyhow, it was $449.99 sword, and I got it for $169.99. Anyhow, I just ordered the Northern Sansibar 1 on Mon. Hopefully it arrives today. Even though TFW's on the East Coast, it my other swords have arrived in about 2-3 days.

I noticed the Zanzibar and a spar I saw in Kali Ilustrisimo with you and Brandon Ricketts. Brandon's pop was my teacher for a very long time. To this day, I revere Topher. Brandon was still a little boy back then. So was Bruce. It is uncanny how Brandon moves so much like his dad. The information was passed on well. Keep it up bro! We here in the Philippines are keeping his torch alive.

@@t3h8ar0n Yes, you're right I got confused of the shapes that's a sansibar very common in the east side of the Philippines, Leyte and Samar. I'm a Filipino, and pretty common in my place is the talibong and the ginunting. My grandfather use to be a head hunter in the time of the Japanese invasion in the Philippines, he use to have a very long talibong.
