Eddy Merckx, pure class. I remember getting his autograph in Harrogate England in 1982. We knew he was around somewhere as he was a special guest at the racing and was starting the racing that evening. I was walking down the street in the afternoon before the evenings racing and he was walking towards us....I scrambled for my pen and some paper and asked him for four autographs for myself and my three friends which he did with a smile. I thanked him, shook his hand and I floated off to the race.
WOW. Thanks for posting this. Was nearby Mr. Merckx on several occasions, and felt his energy. One of Sean Kelly's routines was eating steak for breakfast. Vegetarians could not compete in those days, Jon Boyer excepted.
Both A Sunday in Hell and Stars & Watercarriers have scenes where they're chowing down rare steak, pasta and mashed potatoes before the race, and have both ham & cheese sandwiches and cheese/marmalade buns in their musette bags along with a can of Coca Cola.
It's pointless comparing generations. Eddy was the best of his generation in a generation where there were some hard men around. So he must have been some hell of an athlete. How times have changed. To eat steak hours before a race. Now that is crazy!

Eddie looked fit and rode fast as hell. So the food worked.
You need lots of iron to keep manufacturing those red blood cells back then..
Stewie seems as pumped to be talking to Eddy as I would be if I met him. He's such a legend it is hard for me to believe I could shake his hand.
I cant believe i missed this.... BRILLIANT !
lovely fellows
Would have loved to race back then - no scientists and research; just you, a steel bike, some good food and the road.
2 Legends!
This is good stuff... More like this, please.

Eddy was the best looking bike rider in his days!.
This has aged well ✅

Steak FTW
More proof that cycling was better back in Eddy's day... MAKE CYCLING GREAT AGAIN!
The Carnival
The only cyclist (to my knowledge) immortalised in an Asterix book.
Merckx that is, not O'Grady.
He's vegetatian? Thats sweet!
Yea but eddie was eddy. Everyone else ate the same, so the food isn't the cause.

they dont call him cannibal for nothing lol
A gutful of meat and down tube gear levers. Eek!
Talking about the drugs he used would be more relevant
