  • This is a lo-fi video but a high-quality conversation with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. It's great from the start, but it really hits a groove when we discover a shared connection to an author who writes about birds. SUBSCRIBE IF YOU ENJOY!

Conor Oberst talks to Justin Cox about his music, Jackson Browne, being a child among the Saddle Creek teens, showing ambition in a slacker scene, Pitchfork reviews, a wild story behind “Soul Singer in a Session Band," his songs making sense to him but maybe not to you, Conor’s media diet, listening to audiobooks about feathers, do people pay too much attention to politics now?, AI and Chat GPT, The Faint being ahead of their time, could he write “First Day of My Life” on command?, long songs and “Let’s Not Shit Ourselves,” using SAT words in lyrics, that perfect Waxahatchee record, the next batch of companion EPs, opening for Paramore at the Emo Fest, that cancelled Houston show, writing songs to impress Tim Kasher, Todd Fink and Ted Stevens, leaving Saddle Creek, how to get into the band Superchunk, what does Conor Oberst think of 311?, Rage Against the Machine vs. Limp Bizkit, Down in the Weeds, feeling like The Beatles on the Wide Awake tour... not so much on the Digital Ash tour… and then we meet his dog Petra and say goodbye!

It's so cool, and fitting, that Oberst started off making these DIY lo=fi recordings in his music, but only recently has the opportunity come to kind of match this in his interviews with the access to internet content levelling the playing field. He is better suited to a podcast nterview than any kind of music article sin the past could do justice to, well done. And also, fair play to Connor for doing it, because your "lo=fi" setup is so in line with the album formats he created.
    Writing about birds is cool.

I love that too. I chose to believe it was poetic that both of us had such horrendous connection. Honestly the only reason it's legible at all is that we both hit record on our iPhones and set them on the table so that the audio was captures separately without the connectivity issues. Anyways thanks and LO FI FOR LIFE.

I would love to meet Conor. Everything he wrote happened to me. We sing alike and even look alike. Its weird. Goddammit, Conor.

I knew I'd eventually get this one posted but I had to go in and manually sync up the audio and video every like 15 seconds because the connection was so brutal. Not perfect but not too bad! Thanks Jayme!

I love having it! You work so hard to put this out and I appreciate all of it. I've already listened to the clips but i need to hear Conor talk so it's good. He's my bedtime talker

it feels oddly vindicative to hear conor say mcr is a great band, as someone who's been an obsessive fan of both for so long. maybe phoebe bridgers helped him come around? i remember gerard (singer in mcr) calling conor oberst one of his favourite songwriters some 15 years ago, so I think the respect is mutual :D
great interview, thanks for putting it out there!

I'm probably supposed to ask before I remix your videos but I meant it to be helpful. I had to backup/redo everything recently and I don't know what I'm doing. I'm not a jerk, if that is exploitative or something 🤔. I only started posting things a couple months ago. You can block me ♥️
