After watching this, I have now purchased the book. I have taken note of the scant 1/4 ", so thank you for the heads up and I love watching your Videos Rachel xx
I loved this video Rachel! I ordered the book and it was delivered yesterday. I need to get my fabric and then I can get started on making the blocks. I can hardly wait!!❤
When you set you scant 1/4 inch with the tool, you might find it helpful to run a piece of painters tape along side and extend down further for early visibility. Never have seen that tool. So helpful!
As others have mentioned, your Aurifil spool looks like 50 wt.; if you are wanting a scant 1/4" you do not want to use 40 wt. thread as it is thicker than 50 wt. Some even use 60 wt. thread (in the top and/or bobbin) if they are looking to decrease seam allowance. As I think I mentioned in one of your other videos, I recently learned that not all wt. size threads are the same across thread brands -- making things difficult for us and another good reason to make a test block. Cool scant ruler. Love your fabrics! Thx for sharing your process. And what a beautiful garden!
I love all the blocks, they are beautiful! I don't do quilting, I just enjoy your calm channel and all the beautiful fabrics and the end products. You are doing so great.
Picked up your Polaroid pattern, & a few others today!! Rachel, I knew you could do it!! I loved seeing the look on your face, when you realized that you accomplished your goal! Happy Dance!!!👏👏
Yea for you! So glad you got it. Thanks for the leaders and Enders idea! Now I can sew 2 quilts at once using a rather large pile of 2 1/2 inch squares leftovers from a newly finished EPP project. Love the new pink cutting board, Jean Colorado USA
Well done, your blocks are not only the right size but beautiful. I do not know how you are so productive. Before you know it you will have two quilts. Thank you for your videos.
It might be 50 🤣 I can't read the label very well, a few people are correcting me the comments but I'll have to go back over my emails to check the order but it seems alot thinner than what I was using. It's a mystery 🤣
@@stitchwithrachel you can tell the Aurifil thread weights by the spool color. Starting with the finest thread: 80 wt: tan spool 50 wt: orange spool 40 wt: green spool 28 wt: gray spool 12 wt: red spool So your orange spool is 50 wt!
Singer also makes a tool for gauging various seam widths. Same as this one but it’s white and has holes for 1/8 through 1 inch, including a scant 1/4 inch hole. It comes with a plastic bar that you stick to your machine alongside the measuring part to guide your fabric-same idea as using painters tape.
I clean my machine regularly during projects and it is amazing how much lint collects. Good practice 😉. Your blocks are lovely. Those leaders and enders are growing very well too 👏
So I have the same machine as you and my scants measure out to being at the 3.5 mark on the Liberty fabrics and 3.3 on anything thicker. 3.0 is my normal quarter.
Hi Rachel, I just got the book and going to get started! Beautiful book too😊Your garden is beautiful, you will have to share a pic of your hydrangeas when they bloom😊
Hi Rachel. I love watching your videos. You were talking about highlighting where you are in your book. I am also a knitter and I use highlighter tape to highlight the row I am knitting and then you can lift the tape and move it to the next line. Just wanted to give you that option too. Looking forward to your next video.
Oh my goodness Rachel, you are a bad influence I have so enjoyed your video’s of your beautiful blocks, that I ordered Alice’s wonderland book and love it. Liberty fabric is really expensive and hard to find in the states, so I am going to use different fabrics maybe 1930’s. It is going to be a work on progress, as I have several other projects on the go. Working on a QAYG hexagon quilt at the moment, will work on it for a while till I get bored with it. Then I will move onto something else maybe the Alice’s wonderland blocks. I have never made a quilt with five boarders before, so that will be interesting. Looking forward to your next set of blocks.
I brought the squares precut, around 300 squares of the coloured fabrics, I think, so I'll just keep going until I've used them up. Hopefully, it might be a double... but I never really preplan 🤣
Hello Rachel! Thank you for your videos. All are great! I am a beginner (indeed I am). Could you make a video about how to work with the blocks on the wrong side when we are sewing 2 or more blocks and the seams mix eachother... I always do a mess...
Chill , I make unequal blocks and my quilts always look good..This is not a perfect world... I think colour combinations are what makes your work lovely and the reason why I watch you ..😊
Is there any part of the quilt that you can use for leaders and enders? That would speed the making of the quilt along. I’ll have to check that scant ruler out. And I never thought about this Thread. so thank you very much. Love your videos.
Thank you for showing the tips for achieving a scant quarter inch. Could you tell me how big your leader and ender squares are? I want to order some on line but not sure what to look for. Thanks 😊
Thank you! The coloured squares were precut to 9cm (cm... very annoying when it came to cutting the cream fabric) but I think around 2.5" is a good size as you could also use a jelly roll to have less cutting. Happy stitching.
Thank you for the tip about 40wt thread and scant seam I've been using 50wt thread and relying on a good flat press with a dry iron. It works NEARLY all the time. Your tip should make it ALL the time (fingers crossed)!
50 wt is finer than 40 wt. the higher the number, the finer the thread. I piece with Aurifil 50 wt exclusively and I love it. I find it generates less lint than the average thread.
Rachel, Thank you, you've inspired me so much with this video. I've just finished a year year hand quilting, quilt and have been on the look out for my next project. I've just found it. I would love to use Liberty, but can't get to any shows to pick up the £1 packs. I may look at using normal quilting cotton but not sure if this will work with the book. Any advice you can give would be very welcome. 😊❤️
Good morning Eleanor, this is such a lovely book, so I really do recommend it. If you'd like to use liberty, they sell "sample packs" on their website where you get a good mixture of fabrics for £14, the pieces are big enough. Some of the blocks require long strips and then subcutting them, but if you haven't quilted before, you will be able to adapt the instructions
Hi iam going to buy the book and have a go at making some blocks how much fabric do you use per block?I buy my fabric in fat quarters thank you for this fab idea😊
Hi Jane, I'm sure you'll love the book. I have been using small cuts, approx 9 x 6 but some blocks have needed 13" lengths so you will be absolutely fine with fat quarters. You'll just need a background colour 💖
Hi I'm having trouble getting the finished block does the block finish at 6inch or 6 and a half the info in the block says it finishes at 6inch but the construction says it finishes at 6and a half??I'm confused 😕
@@stitchwithrachel yes I do and a 1/4 inch foot can help they are not that expensive. I had a stroke 2 years ago and had to learn how to do everything again. I kept putting zips in the wrong way and all sorts lv Di ❤️

I love your color sense, and I might be just a little envious of your Tana Lawn collection! Well done Rachel!
Thank you! I am addicted but have no hope if I need larger pieces 🤣
Rachel, I have so enjoyed your channel. Your blocks are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing all your work.
I love watching your videos and listening to you. Thank you for sharing your sewing and quilting with all of us.❤
I loved this video Rachel! I ordered the book and it was delivered yesterday. I need to get my fabric and then I can get started on making the blocks. I can hardly wait!!❤
Wow thanks Rachel and your peeps. I will try the scant 1/4 inch. I already use the 50wt Aurifil.

Beautiful blocks and I am so thrilled for you that the changes you made really helped to achieve the correct block size!! Happy quilting.

Wow, you have made some beautiful blocks and so many leaders and enders. You will end up with 2 beautiful quilts. Thanks for sharing.❤️
I hope so! Thank you for watching ❤️
Hi Rachel, I believe the aurifil is a 50 weight also.
Thank you!
Aurifil makes several thread weights including 50, 40, 28, and 12. The higher the number, the finer the thread. I piece with Aurifil 50 wt.
Great job Rachel love the colours.
Lovely work Rachel & thanks for the tip on the ruler too . 😊 x
40wt thread is still a tad heavy. When you have a chance you might try Aurifil 50 wt! It does make a difference!

Good info. We have the same brand of sewing machine. My machine has a way to set the 1/4 inch seam. You’re surprise at it working made me smile.

Is there a video for the Sashing for the hometown blocks?
@deetorres424 I believe you can find all the finishing information on lori holt blog as that is her pattern 💖
Rachel , Have you considered starching fabric before sewing ? You use such beautiful fabric ,luv your channel !
Do you mean with a spray starch or is there something else?
getting it very wet with a spray starch , on video Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings and Kimberly from Fat Quarter Shop swear by it
Great job!

I don't think there is as every block is different. You could work on two blocks at once but that would require alot of concentration 🤣
Hi Rachel, can you please tell me where in the UK you bought the Perkins scant tool. Cheers!
