Back in the 1970's there was a guy used to walk round the High Street called Sammy Chesebrough. We may have Cortana or Siri today but, if you wanted to know anything about Kippax back then, you asked Sammy. I remember him being interviewed on the local radio once and he was asked the question: What is somebody from Kippax called? The answer was a Kippiser, which he suggested could be pronounced 'iss' or 'eyes'. Sammy said it: It's official!
Well well well! What a fascinating insight into Kippax! I'd love to ask Sammy a few things myself about the village, but thank you so much for clearing up the naming question. If Sammy said it, it must be true! Plus, I think I've found a picture of Sammy published by the Yorkshire Evening Post here if anyone would like to see: facebook.com/YEP.newspaper/photos/onthisday-in-1966-our-photographer-captured-leeds-character-samuel-cheesbroughmr/10153461874263512/ Thank you so much for your comment and for watching!
5.38 when the coop was built this brought to an end for a lot of local businesses and the "village" was never the same again.lived there from around 1978 to 1996 and loved every minute.great video btw
I’ve no idea why I’ve only just come across this excellent and informative video. In answer to your question about what the locals call Kippax, I can say with certainty that we are Kippisers. (A slang way of saying Kippaxers) I was born here 67 years ago and a lot of changes have been made since then. There are some beautiful views and we have won awards for our Kippax in Bloom where locals make the village look an absolute picture.😊
Kippisers for sure, I was born and raised in Kippax went to Kippax School (now demolished) Infact I think I remember linda? I was born 1955. The video walk passes my old chikdhood home in Park Avenue and Grans house Gibson Lane . Amazing, old Sammy Cheeseborough lived in a House behind the Old Club up Mount Pleasant, remember his black Berret cap and he would often push his wife about in a wheelchair.
Ime originally from Kippax. When I was born I lived in the wimpy Estate in 1966.went to all the schools there. Seeing this video brought back so many young memories. Torvill diy has been there forever. The newspaper shop where I delivered papers before school. The old tree pub where my friend Lee Morgan lived. I left Kippax when I was 13.Great memories😊😊😊we used to go sit with Sammy cheeseborough and listen to his stories. He had the house at the end of Mount pleasant gardens.
Those sound like some wonderful memories of Kippax! For a village so close to a big city like Leeds, it's really nice to hear of the tight-knit community over the years among Kippaxers - particularly the many great stories about Sammy Cheeseborough that I've heard! Thank you so much for watching the video - I'm really glad that you enjoyed it and that it brought back some good memories of Kippax for you :)
An interesting video. I twice stayed in KIPPAX in the mid 1980’s. It was during THE MINERS STRIKE. That is why I found this video interesting. I would like to go back there again sometime.
Thank you so much - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - Kippax has a very interesting history to it, and I hope you get the chance to go back sometime as you say :)
No I wasn’t. I was a supporter of the Miners, because of my late father’s involvement with The Labour Party and The Trade Union Movement. I come from the southeast area of England, where there are no pits.
I was 15 years old at the time, and I was about to leave school to go into the big wide world of work. I am now 52. The experience of the Miners Strike still interests me today, because I played a part in history.
Nice village, very beautiful and historical. I enjoyed your history walk. Your history lessons are always wonderful and interesting. Hope to see more of your live wonderful and historical walks soon. Have a great day. Greetings from Canada 😀😀
My uncle Ken used to live in Kippax. We visited him there a couple of times when I was a kid back in the 1960's. My dad used to say the village was named after the kippers we could buy there, looks like he was wrong. I remember being given a toy teepee as a Christmas present when we spent one Christmas there. I immediately set it up in Uncle Ken's front garden and sat hours in it watching the world go by as the grown ups spent Xmas day indoors. I was dead annoyed when my dad demanded I come back inside cos I was starting to turn blue.
Oh no! A simple slip of the tongue (or keyboard) - apologies for the error, but thank you very much for clearing that up :) Thank you for watching - I hope you enjoyed the rest of the video!
I think people who live there are called kippaxers. The only resource I could find was a crowdfunding page in memory of a late resident. Quote: "Our dad was a lifelong kippaxer..."

I've just bought an old Bible previously owned by the Kilburn family from Mount Pleasant, Kippax, Leeds 😊 as written in the Bible in 1859

It's to the east of Leeds not west...

Hi Gracie,
Is the fish and chip shop near Lyndale Road and The Recreation Centre still there?
the working mens club you showed in your video is no longer open and is no longer there as its been pulled down to build home or appartments
