    Wind Row: 1520s, Because it is exposed to the wind for drying.
    Try WD-40 Dry Lube on the rake. Works great and no sticky-ness. ✌

      Also the spray-on slip plate graphite works better than just the powder but you're right you have to wait for it to dry or it's a sticky mess, and easily scraped off by a sharp edge on your bushing.

    The hay is raked into a windrow to allow it to optimize drying by wind. Now I must go to the field and make windrows myself. I feel for you out there. We are having the opposite problem here in NY. We are too wet. 9 inches of rain in 2 weeks. Good luck out there.

    The google machine says 'windrow' is a noun, from 1520's, and it is called such because it is a row of grass exposed to the wind for drying.

      tbh i always thought it was the opposite... im 99.9% probably wrong but on our farm we cut, then leave to dry then ted and flip it all then dry again but when the moisture is just right we toss er in windrows to kinda conserve the moisture in the center of the windrow. it kinda protects the inner clumps, yea the outside dries quicker but thats why we chop asap. at the same time tho our farm is a resurgence farm (my dad was born on a farm and moved away to work then bought a farm with his retirement so returned to the farm life) so that being that we dont know as much as the 5th and 6th gen farms and so on. but we try our best on our dinky 100 acre farm. lol wish it was bigger id love to carry a cam around and do what these farmtubers do. its such great and informative content. yes i know our farm is small. we didnt buy it to turn a profit. we bought it to invest in the land. there is no safer investment then to buy farmland.... prices for actively farmed and turned land always go up.

    A windrow is a row of cut (mown) hay or small grain crop. It is allowed to dry before being baled, combined, or rolled. For hay, the windrow is often formed by a hay rake, which rakes hay that has been cut by a mowing machine or by scythe into a row, or it may naturally form as the hay is mown.
    en.m.wikipedia.org › wiki

  • @nialldaly7108
    @nialldaly7108 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Windrows, because before tedding, you turned the hay into small rows of hay called "Windrows" so they were airrated and the wind went through them to dry them. Nowadays all rows, be it for baling hay or silage for pickup are called windrows. same all over the world. Though in Ireland we tend to qualify the row by width of grass it contains, 10 foot, 20 foot, 30 foot or 50 foot rows and reserve "windrow" for hay, mostly though it varies throughout the country.

    Eyes wide open Cole, good spot on the barb wire. In Saskatchewan we call them swaths, I guess that term came from the fact you use a swather to make them before you combine? Most of it here is done east to west as our prevailing winds are usually out of the west and if you swath north to south your crop ( especially canola ) ends up in the neighbours field. That way the wind blows down your rows.

    Cole, try to be patient with your knee. You sound like my husband as he’s preparing to get recommendations from the Neurosurgeon after x-rays and MRI’s on his back to determine which nerves are impinged. He’s hyper and it’s driving him nuts waiting. Don’t feel worthless, you’re not. Your job is to not get hurt and heal properly so you can be there for your Dad. Luckily, one of the best Dr’s in Texas is a high school friend of ours who is going to offer a second opinion. He’s been a paraplegic since our sophomore year in high school when he and several friends went Dove hunting and somehow after he got in the pickup another friend threw his shotgun in the bed of the truck and it went off shooting him in the back. Horrible accident. We graduated and he went on to graduate with honors from Texas Tech and Tech’s Medical School. He specialized in orthopedics because of his own injury. He snow ski’s and water ski’s with special add on’s. He’s amazing. He’s still my Dr for the tibia fracture. My next surgery is after hubby gets his and is healing and stable. The dang plate is shredding a major tendon around my ankle. Good news is no cast just 6 weeks of walking boot and knee scooter use so that’s great news. Be patient with yourself!

    I'm the only one old enough to remember loading loose hay on the "hay wagon". You raked the hay aligned with the wind (wind row) and loaded it "down wind". Actually I'm only 3/4 of a century old and never loaded loose hay, but it makes a good story!

    • @margelittleboy
      @margelittleboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our old barn actually still has the pulley systems along the roof line used for lifting & pulling the loose hay to where it would lay. We use small 60 lb bales, I can’t imagine moving hay by the fork full back in the day! With only 2 horses can’t feed round bales, too much waste & mold. Whether done by the fork load, round, block or square, there is no easy way to bale. We buy from a neighbor & he brings his own elevator & puts the hay in the loft for us. It’s a win win - it’s in our barn & he doesn’t have to move it again. He can do it when it works for him & it’s put up in about 2 hrs max. A lot of his customers get it by the month, so he’s always handling it.

    • @bobteter4300
      @bobteter4300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@margelittleboy Our barn had the same rall & pulley system. When I was a kid the old scissor hook was still in the barn, but I never saw it in action. We always hired a a guy doing "custom" work with a New Holland baler. (Twine tied rectangular bales). I wish I could remember the NH model number. I remember he was always fiddling with the knotter mechanism and cursing.

    Really Enjoyed watching this Video as well as all the other videos you put out so far this summer been watching and keeping up with your content thanks so much for sharing and explaining everything to us Non Farmers Keep up the great work and hope you have a great weekend. To Answer your Question A windrow is a row of cut hay or small grain crop. It is allowed to dry before being baled, combined, or rolled. For hay, the windrow is often formed by a hay rake, which rakes hay that has been cut by a mowing machine or by scythe into a row, or it may naturally form as the hay is mown.

    I know last thing you want to do on a bad year is spend more money, but have you though about putting tile in your wetlands? Place it shallow in the wet and slope it towards your dryer lands try and even out the field without loosing any of the moisture. Just something to look into!

    Enjoy your videos cole. Cole look into LPS lubricant number 3. That might work for your rake and for your quick release.

    I’ve been through the whole knee a couple times myself. First time was from a fall and the second was similar to yours. The ACL seems to be the easy part but when they mess with the meniscus that takes a bit longer to heal. Good luck to you bro. I was six months each time.
