I use to have an Android as a backup phone to my iPhone, but it’s been a while. One thing that you mentioned that I use to notice is that Android has this animation issue or whatever you want to call it. It was always hard for me to describe as well. It’s like it’s fast and things open quick, but it still feels unpolished or something. I think it’s between the frame rate and transition animations. I could be wrong. Also, I feel like it’s scrolls too fast on web pages. I know that sounds crazy, but when you scroll on a web page on an iPhone, it literally feels like someone actually thought about what is the proper speed to scroll. I don’t know. It’s hard to explain. I know the hate is coming lol!

I know exactly what you are referring to when you talk about the animations and frame rate sometimes feeling unpolished. I find that to be a common theme among Androids, where they give amazing experiences, but also sometimes feel unpolished. I also have an iPhone as main phone, in one pocket, and a Android as a secondary, in the other pocket. Some of Androids nuances definitely keep my primary sim in a flagship iPhone, and a secondary sim in a flagship Android!

Funnily enough, after using Android for a while now, the iOS animations and scrolling just feel unbelievably sluggish and slow. I get what you mean by a lack of polish, but I also think that has become a non-issue at least over the past couple of years. It's probably just something that we each have to get used to when we use the other OS.

I think that Apple's UI team have tightly integrated _hooks_ in the kernel which allow the UI to appear smooth and responsive.
Other kernel developers optimize for performance because they want good spec mark scores - but Apple wants a responsive UI and are willing to sacrifice some performance to get it.
Even when Apple iPhone displays were only 60 hz, the touch interface ran at 120 hz to help the UI feel smooth and frictionless.

That's kind of like saying after a certain point you can never switch phones. The key is not to get too immersed in one Corporation ecosystem where you end up being stuck which is exactly what they want. Ecosystems suck, they are just proprietary limitations. But even to the extent Samsung or Google even have an ecosystem it's much easier to use their devices with non Samsung or Google devices.
Really apple is the only major player that places really strict proprietary limitations. Have convinced a lot of people that's a benefit but when in fact it's anti-consumer to the Core

@@michaelcorcoran8768 To my point, when you're too deeply immersed as you said it becomes impractical to switch for reasons like Drew stated. I own a galaxy, my ecosystem consists of only earbuds so a switch wouldn't be too hard. I don't want to switch because in my lifetime people have talked down on my phone and see iPhones as a status symbol and I'll never switch to please them or fit in. I did try to switch this year and by far the hardest thing for me was letting go of my Apple Card and Apple Savings. They are so convenient it almost outweighs everything else. Texting, as you pointed out is a non-issue. For FaceTime using Google Meet, Whats App or anything similar gets a bit of resistance from others but it does work. The strangest thing was the screaming that went up when no one could find me on Find My. I have to admit, I missed using it as well. It seems my friends, family and I are all voyeurs! I am well back in the Apple fold but will probably keep dabbling with Android and ChromeOS here and there. I am typing this on a Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5. 🤣

You started with two items not applicable in many countries other than the US.
Where I am, absolutely no-one uses iMessage, everyone (even businesses) use WhatsApp.
Wallet is also poorly supported here, and most people rely on StoCard, as it has all the local loyalty cards etc. It also allows you to create cards with their barcode, something that’s missing in Wallet.
As for passwords, I use different ones for different sites, none of them remembered by any third party systems.

Oh, the animation thing is something I totally relate with. Android's animations feel a lot more "stiff" which looks kind of bad to me compared to the smooth rubber-bandy effect ios has. On the topic of UI, android looks a lot better now than it used to be when I was a nexus 4 user (kitkat and everything before it looked so ugly to me), so android looks a lot more visually appealing to me now that I am tempted to switch over. Not to mention my current iPhone X is in really poor shape and I'm not able to buy a new iPhone at the current moment, so I might have to do with a budget used Android phone 😣

10:40 I think I might know how to explain this a little. If you compare the scrolling on iPhone and Android, you will notice pretty big differences. If I scroll a little bit on the iPhone, it scrolls longer, but if I scroll a little bit on an Android phone, it doesn't last nearly as long. It's almost like Android scrolling sits on wheels that don't spin for very long when you spin them, whereas iOS scrolling sits on wheels that spin for a very long time. Also, if you attempt to scroll fast on Android, it scrolls way faster than iOS to the point where it feels unnatural, whereas on iOS, it kind of feels like pulling teeth to really scroll fast if you are, say, at the bottom of a very long webpage and want to get back to the top very quickly. This faster scrolling also makes it harder to control the scrolling if you are casually scrolling through a news article. Sometimes Android will scroll too much, or it may scroll too little. On iOS, you don't experience this problem as much because Apple caps the scrolling speed on iPhone. This may be a big reason why you feel like Android is more clunky.
Also, many Android phones have a much less responsive touchscreen than iPhones, so if you touch a button, it will take longer for your an Android phone to register that as an input, but your iPhone will do it in a way that feels almost instant. This may be another reason why you feel Android is more clunky. Many Android phones also have a greater wobble when scrolling than iPhones do. The wobble is how far across the screen your finger must move before the page actually starts to scroll.
And yes, there is the UI. On Android, you probably won't notice the occasional UI jitters because they are so subtle, but with time, they could lead to annoyance without even realizing it. I feel like iOS has a much more fluid UI than Android.
Honestly, there is a lot more to it than that, but those could be some reasons.

By the way, you mentioned the problem of transferring your passwords from Apple Keychain to Google
On your MacBook, go to the Settings App, open Passwords.
There is a button with ... to the right of the search box, click on that, and "Export all passwords"
Select where you want to save it, authenticate with touch-id
Then open Chrome, sign into your Google Account
Click on your profile icon, second to the right on the toolbar
Click on the key button under your gmail address
To the right of "Saved passwords", there are buttons for "Add" and three dots arranged vertically.
Clock on the dots, and Import passwords
Select file, and browse to where you saved the export file above
Give it a few minutes for the import to sync with Google, and a few more for it to sync from Google to your phone.
You now have all your iPhone passwords in Android.
Delete the password file you exported and empty the trash bin.
If you are moving from Android to iPhone, you can do the same in the reverse direction. Export from Chrome and import into Keychain.

It's hard to talk about ecosystems since Google hasn't been in the hardware game for a long time. Even now I think they still work with other manufacturers to make their phones. Probably the most comparable ecosystem is the Samsung one. I haven't found it that hard to use Samsung Pay and Samsung has partnered with SoFi to offer a high-yield savings account as well. I use both iOS and Android so get the best of both worlds. Apple does have a clean interface for the credit card. I guess I haven't paid too much attention to the animation so both feel pretty similar.

Nice video but you overlooked nearby share (android's version of airdrop which is just as fast if not faster), Google's first party password manager and the fact that the iMessage stuff could be solved by apple supporting RCS

I used to love Android but after switching to iOS I will never go back to an Android device. iOS tends to work fairly well and iOS devices tend to be supported for a longer period of time and you get value from your device. I’m glad I switched.

FRecently switched from iOS to Android - ProMax to S23 Ultra. If you take the time to look past the hype, iOS is too restrictive. For your examples, 1. I don’t use an Apple card. The Wallet is lame and only use Apple Pay for online. Google Pay and Samsing Pay work just as well. 2. Passwords, I dropped keychain a while back as it is an open sore - access code allows to much access. Especially in the event of theft. 3. For the User interface, there are so many launchers. Just find one thqat works for you. iOS is too restrictive. My biggest iOS complaint - the bugs that never get fixed and the inability to choose MY defauolt apps.

I've been a life long android user and always noticed how animations feel like they stutter whenever you put the phone on 60hz. Idk what is causing it and still can't put my finger on it either

  • @frankw3123
    @frankw3123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It still baffles me that in 2023, US tech reviewers still don't get why android works the way it works. For example, the animation thing, u can change that in developer options, transition, window and animation scale. Also androids have quick share, or nearby share, Bluetooth share etc. Samsung has an extensive ecosystem that includes washer and dryers, fridge, vacuums, etc. Heck u don't need airdrop if u use Google services which many use. Works across all platforms. Save everything on google drive and just open it up on any platform. Apple has really done a number on the psyche of most Americans. Apple = conspicuous consumption

The one problem with the Google Pixel 6 Pro was that it was not clear if the model sold at the Google Store supported MMWAVE or not so they lost a customer to Apple with their iPhone 13 Pro Max since Apple is upfront with their tech and since I live within 80 miles of Chicago I can make use of MMWAVE if going on a trip to Chicago.

And I agree I missed the smoothness, it felt « harsh » and made the experience not as enjoyable

in early 2013 i decided to rip all my mp3 tracks i had on cd-r. that i had collected from around 2002-2012 using p2p software such as napster, and limewire. I was ripping thousands of tracks and this was gonna take some time because I was entering the meta data as i was ripping (song name artist name album name album art) using nothing but my memory and google. I came across a software that would autofill the meta data using song recognition tech, this was a huge help. However this particular software only worked with itunes so itunes is what i used to manage my media. itunes as a media player was great for me i can create folders, sub folders that playlists can go into, which was great for organization. Somewhere along the way I learned about itunes match which used song recognition tech to replace your version of a track with the itunes version and saved to your icloud library along with your folders, subfolders and playlists. From there I started using apple music and never went back to downloading mp3's so not only is my personal collection of music trapped in itunes library so is my streaming music collection since 2015 or so.
but this is not a bad thing, my personal collection and streaming collection live together in one cohesive unit.

Ios apps never stuttered or crashed and inherently android as an os will never have that bc every app has to work on a thousand different types of roms and hardware.

How about using the Samsung S23, preferably standard size (256 gb since it has a faster 4.0 speed vs 3.1 on 128 gb) or one of their foldables coming out later this year?
It will have some of the shortcomings you mentioned here but despite that I am sure that it will be a smoother experience.
