Thank you for this. Quand même feels like one of those parts of language that as learners we shouldn’t try to directly translate, and more just get a feel for it and how and when it’s used, if that makes sense. If possible, could you do a similar video/explainer of Du Coup? I was in a taxi the last time I was in Paris (seems so long ago! It was during the big strikes and the metro and trams weren’t running) and talking to the driver she would use du coup all through the conversation and although I could understand basically what she was saying, the du coup confused me a little
so true, a lot of language learning is getting the feel of how expressions work and understanding when it feels right to say it :) and yeah ok ! we'll do that :) it such a great expression. but it means "so" and "as a result".
in french "donc" is a bit too formal for spoken language so we say "du coup" all the time :)
Du coup is adorable. Since I discovered it, I try to use it often!

Thanks for nice channel, I just found it by chance! For Russian-speaking people it's quite easy to get the sense of "quand même" because there is the same phrase(s) in Russian ("все-таки" or a bit different "все же") which is literally used in the same way and situations like it's used in French.

ah yeah totally, but to respond really quickly forget those expressions, "en l'occurrence" is way too formal and you should say "du coup" not "pour le coup". "Du coup" = "donc" = as a result

I am surprised no one asked you guys about (or was there?) the way the french people say quand même when they speak. It took me a long time to spot quand même from people’s conversations. It goes from qu’em to qua’m and so many other variations, not to mention the different accents on top of that. It is equally challenge if not more so to hear people saying it.
ah I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about exactly. The way Maïa says is in the examples shows already different intonations etc. But yeah different accents can be challenging^^
@@Street_French I meant most of the time people do not say/pronounce 'quand même" as two words in spoken French.
i've always just assumed that it means "nevertheless"

On l'utilise aussi parfois comme un "ben voyons !". Par exemple, si quelqu'un fait quelque chose de pas poli on dirait, de façon un peu outré, "Ben voyons/Bah quand même ! Vous pourriez faire ça ailleurs..."

For the negative tinge in English, "regardless" might be a useful translation.
Can you turn of the automatic subtitles? They have very little to do with what you’re actually saying, and they certainly don’t transcribe French. They get in the way of your own captions on the screen. Very good informative videos though. Même si les sous-titres automatiques sont ennuyeux, j'apprécie quand même vos vidéos.
Could you explain enfin vs. finalement in spoken French?

Is 'quand même' casual or formal? It seems like a casual way to say "if it's all the same to you?" Maybe the translation might be 'any ways' that saying can have a sarcastic casual side, or it can be used in normal conversation.
in this video we talk about 2 ways of using it. The first way is standard, no problem to use it. the second way is really informal and kind of rude
J'utilise tout le temps cette construction, mais je le mets toujours hors de la proposition.
Presque tous les exemples que vous avez donnés inclussent le "'quand même" dans la même proposition, alors ma question se concerne de la différence entre "....mais je vais acheter quand même un nouveau portable" vs "...vais acheter un nouveau portable, quand même" (2:09) quant au sous-entendu. ah oui c'est la même signification, on peut dire les deux phrases. Par contre c'est :
"je vais quand même acheter un nouveau portable"
et
" je vais acheter un nouveau portable quand même"

"Comme d'hab" is the shorten form of "comme d'habitude" which means "as usual"

ow for lorsque you should just forget about it. depends on your goal of course but we never use it in spoken French, it's too formal. We might use it in professional emails though. Just say "quand" instead ^^
instead of "lorsque j'étais petite..." say "quand j'étais petite..."

Here are two examples of lorsque--one of them is literary (and rarely used, except maybe in essays and other works which have an academic or literary tone) and the other still can be heard by some people in day to day speaking.
'Les autres mangent lorsque je ne me suis même encore pas habillé'-- Here, 'lorsque' means 'alors que', or 'while' in English. This usage is literary. "The others are eating, while I havent' even gotten dressed yet'
If you are a boss alerting your employees of instructions during an imminent fire drill, you could say : 'Lorsque l'alarme incendie se déclenchera, évacuez l'immeuble. '--Here, 'lorsque' means 'au moment où' (or 'quand') or 'when' (or 'as soon as') in English. 'When (or 'as soon as') the fire alarm goes off, evacuate the building'. Sure, you could use 'quand' if you wanted to. It would be more natural for some people. But 'lorsque' is totally acceptable and not at all restricted to written language.

You absolutely could say that. There are other ways of saying 'still/anyway', but they don't necessarily depend on a situation being positive or negative. I don't totally buy 'quand-même being only with negative situations' argument.
Il y a aussi le 'quand meme' un peu vieillot: "Non mais quand-même, c'est pas possible!".

J'aime beaucoup regarder vos vidéos que je trouve très intéressantes. Je ne sais pas si vous en avez déjà parlé, mais comment pourrait-on traduire ces expressions françaises : "Du coup" (très souvent utilisé dans le langage parlé, mais pas que!). Et justement "mais pas que", peut-on le traduire par "not only" ? Sinon "Encore que!" (à la fin d'une phrase). Exemple: il n'est pas si méchant après tout. Encore que!" et "Je n'accroche pas" ? Exemple: parler d'une série / film et dire du personnage ou du film "J'accroche pas". Evidemment, j'imagine que l'on peut traduire par "I don't like" mais à part ça, n'y a t-il pas une expression plus spécifique ?

I mostly think of it as all the same. But I don't see it is particularly negative. Often it is and agreement with someone or at least confirming a situation.

"Rappeler" n'est jamais suivi de "que" en français.
"Même si elle avait pas beaucoup d'argent"...il manque la négation (elle n'avait) !

Il me semble que le verbe "rappeler" peut être suivi de "que", comme dans l'exemple suivant :
"Il est important de rappeler que les mesures d'hygiène doivent être respectées."
Je ne pense pas que cette phrase soit incorrecte 🤔
On préférera la tournure suivante:
"Il est important d'insister sur le caractère obligatoire du respect des mesures d'hygiène".
La phrase est plus compliquée, je vous l'accorde.

@Sean O'Brien C'est probablement ce qu'ils ont voulu dire, en effet. Néanmoins, le verbe "rappeler" est souvent mal utilisé. Dans l'exemple de la vidéo, les tournures suivantes seraient préférables:
- "Nous attirons votre attention sur le fait que beaucoup de chômeurs ne gagnent pas d'argent."
- "Il y a quand même beaucoup de chômeurs sans revenus, ne l'oublions pas".
