    Always appreciate your insightful reviews. A couple suggestions to make them even better, try some fft measurements on your scope to characterize the harmonics. Also, if you do your x-y against a good reference generator, you can get an idea on jitter and drift. Just some thoughts…

    Is there an isolation rating on the power supply? Having a floating output could be useful, but I would not trust the power supply. With a floating external 5v supply in and bluetooth control the floating output could be very useful.

    I'm liking the external VCO and modulation inputs ... wish those external features were on my Siglent SDG2042X (hacked to SDG2122X!) that cost 3 times the price of the JDS8080.

    Does this model have a trigger output for the start of its sweep function? The JDS6600 was EXTREMELY annoying in that it had the sweep facility, but there was no way to trigger a scope display to observe frequency responses! Anybody know a mod to fix this? [and the loose ground on this example is a real NO-NO, Junctek :( ]

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is supposed to be a trigger in/out, maybe I should try it.

    • @JanCiger
      @JanCiger ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AFAIK, there is a trigger/sync signal on the TTL pin header in the back. It is all undocumented, so yay ...
      These generators are on the market in multiple variants for several years now, Junctek (formely Juntek) and Feeltech apparently poached each other's design sometime in the past and then there are lot of rebadgers.
      But all of these are the same design - a small FPGA driving an R/2R DAC (older models had literally a resistor ladder soldered there) that drives a cheap video opamp for the output. The signal level is very approximate, there is plenty of distortion due to the crappy DAC and filters, there is plenty of jitter in the signal due to the way they do the synthesis ... The only difference is that the newer models have slightly nicer UI with the color TFT display instead of the 2 line character LCD.
      There was even a model that has a firmware that literally bricked itself after a while - and the manufacturer refused to recall or fix it. The power supply problems (lack of earth, noise, poor quality capacitors, etc.) are also a never ending story with these devices, best not use the built-in supplies.
      There is plenty of information about these generators on the EEVBlog forum.

      @@JanCiger Many thanks Jan, I'll probe the TTL connector again! I didn't see a trigger before, but of course it may be firmware version dependent. One of the "amusing" things about the early units was that the resolution of the user-settable amplitude shown on the screen, FAR exceeded the accuracy of the base output level! And of course the "amplitude" value isn't really amplitude at all (i.e. A as in v(t)=Asin(wt)) Their "Amplitude" is actually the unterminated Vpp!
      But I guess the older versions were far better than nothing for hobbyists, considering their price. My lasting impression was that they were designed by DIGITAL engineers with little experience of ANALOG measurements! They have probably now got much better!

    Before I get too far into the video, I have to say, a company that names themselves,
    *"JUNCTEK"*
    to me, doesn't build a lot of confidence in their products.
    I mean, if they are admitting, UP FRONT, that their products are JUNC (even if a different spelling) I for one would just not touch any of their stuff. Even to save a few bucks.
    I'll stick to name brands that have proven themselves.
    I noticed that the "links" to download their software doesn't use a domain name NOR is it secured!!!
    They are using an IP Address!! That does NOT instill much confidence at all!
    For one thing, if their ISP ever dumps them or they leave for another ISP, they can lose that IP address.
    They should have it registered in DNS. It's VERY EASY to do and literally takes 5 minutes.
    SKETCHY!!!

    How can this be a review? when you ain't reviewing anything.... is it even accurate?.. what kind of phase noise does it have,.. if there are tolerances.. does it deliver according to that?.. to sum up is it s good waveform generator ?
    does it perform as a 40 dollar unit, just with a heavy mockup?
    this is an unboxing and you turn it on, and turn some dials and take the casing off.. review? really.. I know it likely ain't you that decided that "Review" label, as all these smaller channels that were greased with this unit.. ALL got the exact same headline "Review" so likely some sugardaddy in China that decide in what level your bottom shall sit and the headline you need to be paraded with, but come on, Defpom.. your better then this.. check the unit... you ain't fresh of the boat in this field...
