Into the lymphatic system through the perineural lymphatics around the cranial and spinal nerve roots and through the perivascular and perisinusoidal lymphatics. 3. Back to the brain extracellular space through gap junctions between pial cells and between ependymal cells. CSF has many functions, among them: 1. Provides a drainage system for the brain by transferring the waste products from the brain to the blood. 2. Maintains a homeostatic environment for the CNS through the communication with the brain extracellular space.
