#dreammachine This sounds awesome! I've been needing to upgrade to a more intuitive router that will protect my family. Since I've got kids that are growing up and learning to use the internet and plenty of IOT devices I need the ability to customize router options to protect my little SOHO network. Even if I don't win this giveaway I'll definitely be checking this product out. Thanks Chuck for exposing me to this device.
After watching this I immediately ordered the Dream Machine to replace my aging router. The WiFi connection speeds on all connected devices more than doubled. Even our big screen TV, which is directly wired, was faster than when wired into my old router which I wasn't expecting. Devices that would drop connections sporadically were now connected 100% of the time, which made me realize just how flaky my old router was. The user interface is next level insane with the amount of details and control it provides. One thing in particular that really impressed me (among so many other things) is the ability to block traffic coming from any country displayed on the world map even when no threat is detected.
Hi Chuck, I took my dream machine on holiday this year, thanks for the tip!. Even though the rental only had a 30mb connection compared to our 300mb connection at home; the dreammachine did a great job of keeping everything going smoothly. not once did I have to ask the kids to stop streaming so I could watch Netflix :)
A really fantastic review! I purchased one based on this (as well as the UniFi AP Beacon HD Meshpoint). Currently renting a basement leaving 2 families in the same home, and I desperately needed a second SSID + VLAN to protect the server my wife and I store sensitive documents on, and keep random guests from being on our network. A worthy upgrade from our Google Wi-fi network! Seriously can't believe you can do 4 networks with separate VLANs in a consumer grade router that is equal in cost to anything decent you'd get from best buy. Fantastic!
Dude, you are most definitely my favourite networking teacher on TH-cam. I love your energy and speed. Don't ever change your delivery! (I can pause and rewind the things I didn't catch, but your a dream come true for us manic people who want info fired at us!)
What a breath of fresh air you have been, Chuck. I have been overhauling my home network after a lot of weird activity on our network. You have given me such piece of mind over my home once more.
Why no discussion of the privacy and security implications? No WPA3, but Ubiquiti said in Feb 2020 that it's "coming soon" and they haven't applied for certification but "they'll be ready" when WPA3 is required; spoiler alert - it's been required for certification by the WiFi Allliance since July 2020. They've been silent on this for months. Some features of UDM also require remote access to user data: possibly Threat Management (like Asus AiProtection), and a UniFi account is REQUIRED to even use this thing. These seem like glaring omissions for someone who teaches security to security professionals. I guess when Ubiquiti is paying the bills, you don't bite the hand that feeds.
I started watching your videos about a week ago when i started thinking about upgrading my modem and router. Now I have an Amazon shopping list labeled "network upgrades". I have my eyes set on having my whole network behind a VPN and setting up my own NAS. Your channel is dangerous my man.
I ended up buying this. and being someone that is stuck on crap att dsl that maxes out at 100mb. this thing helped me a bunch. I only used the one and I went from spotty wifi and slow internet speed of 15mb to 80mb and wifi that seems to be great all-around my house. it feels like it manages what you have better cause everything seems to just load better. now I'm obsessed with adding the correct photos to everything in my house. good product and good review.
My favorite part of the dream machine is how everything is built in. I was speccing out a full UniFi setup, and then found this device - much cheaper and will do everything I was wanting to do! #DreamMachine

Thanks for a great video. Well structured and well edited with just the right amount of information. I was very disappointed with my DM until I moved to the PC management interface rather than the phone app. Suddenly, all the great features were there - firewall rules, port forwarding, IPS and more. Following along with your video, I was able to set up my whole network the way I wanted it in about an hour.
I've worked in Fortune 500 networking since 2000. Had CCNA three times lol, my Lord what a list of certs! It's staggering, how much money Cisco used to make, and how many jobs were involved, how much time and meetings and headaches getting set up (site-to-site VPNs), all the human effort that was wrapped up in what this box just *does*. The way for folks with the skillset to be able to configure this thing to add value is exactly what you said. Here is my new side gig and who knows. The IDS/IPS function is a worthy security feature for a home user. I love the overall 'look' of this unit as it is similar to my Airport Extreme (needing to replace it with something soon!). Enjoyed your review and your positivity (5-stars)
I purchased the USG yesterday, cancelled the order this morning and ordered the Dream Machine instead after watching this! This is literally what I was trying to piece together for my home network but instead it's all in one!
I think the Alien Router you're talking about is part of Ubiquiti's AmpliFi line which is the home user version. It's meant to be simple for the average user. The Ubiquiti's UniFi line is meant for advanced users and small businesses so it offers more settings for security and management features. The Dream Machine is part of that UniFi line. I'm waiting for them to make a Dream Machine with 802.11ax (WiFi 6).

I've been shopping around for a new router! Thanks for the advice I might go buy one of these if I don't win. Im definitely into the faster speeds with iDS turned on #dreammachine
Watching your review made me want to buy a Dream machine, then I went and read the reviews on Amazon and it had the exact opposite effect. How do you explain the stark difference in user reviews on amazon vs yours? Are you being paid to do this?
Great video Chuck. I've got into COMPTIA certifications and there is a lot to learn from your videos. Back in December I wanted to upgrade my home WIFI from N to the latest and I found out there is a lot of colors to choose from. I ended up with a combo router/modem dual 2.4ghz and 5ghz while I decide. But this not just looks amazing, is a home practice network kit to play around and learn all these features. #dreammachine seems to be the solution, compared to google mesh this has the tweaking possibility that very few mesh systems offer. Thanks for the review and all the knowledge you share!
I asked the IT guy at my job what he recommended for a wifi router and he said this piece of equipment. I think I am going to go with it after this demo.
The UDM and UDR only have 11 categories of threat management vs. 35 categories in the UDM-Pro/SE versions. Something to consider if you want the best protection.
I find it so funny your promoting this great geek router but assume "in most case" we are using a ISP provided cable modem vs our own LMAO! Great Vid #dreammachine
Fabulous video Chuck, I am a retired Network specialist and i always come back to your channel for updates and new info, i also just installed a new UDM in my home love it
My router starting to crap out, wife is tired of the wifi dropping connections so we both agreed its time to order a new router so now i ordered this beast of a machine. I cannot wait!
Replaced a UniFi USG with a UDM this morning. Set up was really quick and easy. Reminded me of eero. But, the Dream Machine is a lot of bang for the buck! Have a few questions about adopting the previous "Network". I'm going to rewatch the video again for additional instruction.
Very interested in this product, but I read a few customer-reviews saying signal-coverage is weak. One on amazon posted these issues: "Issues that I had: - UDM was almost centered at my home (location) but coverage seemed not good, had more dead spaces compared to my old one. - Speeds varied per minute, I have giga service at my house. The UDM was getting from the company router the speed pay for, but, the speed from the UDM to my hardware varied a lot, sometime unstable. Been 15-20 feet away from the UDM and the speeds would go down by more than half than been 8-11 feets (same room no walls in between (Living room/Ktchen)). - Downloading something around 50GB - game in steam (pics) - would get the UDM into extreme high gears, fan will go to high speeds (could be heard upstairs) and internet will drop for some machines (pics attached). This never happened with my old router. - UDM would dropped connection or go into high processing year (which caused internet out) - TCP errors all the time" Could he have a faulty unit? I'm rather worried about weak signal-strength and noise, since the tiny AP I have right now has surprisingly strong coverage and no fan.
Chuck thanks for the video. I've been looking for this for a while now I found one at the flea market and the guy wanted 200 bucks and now I'm loving this device
As someone that is working in IT and studying for my Network + exam, I must say, I totally subbed to you because of this one video. Love the vibes you give out from what I can see so far. Keep doing what you are doing!
Question 1. if it has a 4 port managed switch can i add a unmanaged switch and still mange them via dream machine ? 2. would two cloud keys not clash 3. best switch for small office unmanaged, manged layer 2
Thanks for this review! Have you had a chance to review the Dream Router? Just curious if you had and if you were able to share any differences (other than the LCD and Wifi 6). Thanks again! I really enjoy your videos. You seem like you thoroughly love what you do and its energizing.
Hello sir, I am pretty much in the same situation as you are in. I can't figure out which one to buy. The other videos I have seen here on TH-cam were there have tried to make a comparison between these two has all been a waste of time 😊 I just wanted to ask you, have you gathered more information since you wrote this comment four months ago? I am also interested to know more about how Dream Router and the Dream Machine compare to each other. I would love to hear your opinion on this. Thanks 😊
Did you ask about coffee? My preferred brand is Nomadic Coffee. Poetry in every bag (they pay contemporary poets and have notable content editors every quarter on their website). All Certified Organic origins and blends with dozens of small batch roasts to choose from. My faves are the Interstate medium-dark, the Uganda single origin, and the Espresso Amargosa (I have a home Rancilio espresso machine, so enjoy coffee as a serious hobby). Thanks for EXCEPTIONAL content and thorough treatment of this device and it’s features. Looking forward to more looking at your more business oriented reviews, specifically on mesh networks in commercial and industrial settings.
#DreamMachine, favourite feature is the simplicity of the set up and the Intrusion Detection System. With three small children and two disabled parents, out home WiFi network on our farm is literally the backbone to our home. Love and peace for the videos my friend. X
just installed a dream machine SE for my home network. by far the easiests netwk setup i have ever done bolth in my professional and non professional life.
I wasn't aware of this product until about a week ago when I first saw it in one of your videos. It's looking increasingly like something that I really want to get for myself. One thing that maybe puts me off? The cooling fan. Does it run all the time or just when things start getting toasty inside? Also it's a shame it doesn't have a modem built in but I know that's hard to do with so many different end user environments it's going into. I guess I'd just need to put my existing ISP-provided router into modem only mode. Looks like great kit anyway, and if I see one for an amazing low price I think I'll probably add it to basket.
I hope they improved their durability. I have an Ubiquiti Unifi access point PoE from about 2015 lasted until around early 2017. Looked cool with the square blue light and worked great until It started dropping connections on connected devices and I just gave up resetting it and trying to keep it working. Haven't gone back to muck with it again.
Thank you for a superb review of this unique product. You provided easy to understand feedback that clarified some questions I had regarding this device. Nice touch including your daughters in the vid. I look forward to more of your network topic discussions. For me, the simplicity of set up, form factor and the inclusion of all those networking components in one package make this a remarkable router package. I am looking to upgrade from an Apple Airport Extreme and an airport express extender. Amplifi's Alien mesh system is also very appealing due its features and simplicity. Tough choice.
At the beginning of lockdown it became painfully obvious my AirPort Extreme was no longer up to the task. Unfortunately Apple has gotten out of the network business. I went online to bestbuy to see what I could get and the only router within 250 miles of me was a Netgear RAX 50. It is horrible. The WiFi is constantly dropping. Today I ordered the UDM. Hopefully it will be as reliable as the old Extreme was.
looks sweet, I am all the way in Namibia (Africa) and cant wait to get hold of this. This side of the world we are very Unifi orientated but certain hardware is a bit costly to the exchange rate. I am currently running 2x Unifi AP for my house. My fav feature is the dream machine picks up everything automatically and have built in threat management, that is way cool
This is an awesome video. Thank you for posting and going through the basics of using the device. It is very exciting that all these features are incorporated in one device!! I do really like Ubiquiti products - this reinforces it. Thanks again.
Looking for upgrade my home network to make it more secure. I’ve always wanted to go with the UAG, cloud key, and add a AP or two. Two reasons I haven’t is cost of all products. 2. Parental controls. The dream machine seems amazing for the price. I love being able to glam things out in your network like guests or even security cameras. Could you let me know more about what it can do as far as parental controls? I like to filter my devices by MAC and then have the WiFi block devices by time of day, to keep kids from being up all night. Thanks. MikesArmy!
Your enthousiasm made me buy a Dream Machine I never thought I would do that, but until now I don't have regrets. What an awesome device! Question: I would like to add video camera's to the Unifi network. I did some minor research and I think I need a POE switch to connect to my dream machine. However I want to connect a camera outside in the back yard as well. While my Dream machine is inside (about 15 metres away.) what do you suggest?
Great info and break down of the dream machine. Wish I would have found your channel earlier. Congrats to all the 3 people that won. I’m in the process of looking at doing a network with all ubiquiti stuff.
2x of them just arrived at home, I can't wait to experience them. The Graphical interface looks awesome. I agree with you the console would have been a plus.
@@alrod9535 it works great, the Graphical interface is so easy to use (Do not use the "New interface). Compared to microtik and cisco, this device is very easy to use.
Great video, great product. There was an awful lot of e-peen flashing going on, but hey, dude's put a lot of effort in, and he's proud of it. Good for him.
Since I just found you like a week ago... My favorite coffee is from Snowy Elk Coffee Co. The Morning Bugle or Leave No Trace blends are our favorites. Locally roasted and organic. You can order some if you wanna try it. They deliver to my door since I'm in the same city. Great stuff as I'm trying to get out of construction biz and into IT. I'm to old for running my tile contracting biz on my own anymore. Networking or CySec is the route I'm looking at.
5:08 the only reason I always set my routers to separate the dual band is because some of those "smart" devices like the wifi plugs/light strips/etc require the 2.4GHz, and I've not found a way to get that working without having the separate channel for it to choose from in the setup.
Your videos are great and very useful , you have a great voice for this kind of calm delivery , easy to listen to for longer periods of time - I think the unit for me with be the "yet to be released "UDM-SE" , I think the UDM form factor with POE on the unit for adding Access Points and the LCD like the Alien unit will be the way to go - Why do you think there has been pictures and model number floating around for so long without a product release ? and insight on timeline ? - UI seems to have no WIFI-6 hardware , (Unifi 6 Lite rumored) , only on the Amplifi consumer side with Alien , but their Amplify seems to be under a Firmware crisis at the moment with performance, interoperability and stability issues all over the place... anything that needs to be rebooted more frequently than Environmental events like the occasional power glitch from the utility every 6 months or so is NOT ready for primetime use...) - Do you think UDM-SE will be WIFI 6 and they are holding up for a FULL Product Line refresh to WIFI-6 ? - Could you please make a video on how to share a printer across multiple VLANS , would be useful for Printer access from GUEST WIFI and then if I segment my home office traffic from Kid's traffic from "general traffic" but would like the easily share a printer across all VLANS. I have searched and no good videos on this and your delivery style would be a good way for me to learn this And lastly , something we are all now dealing with now , IOT.... I run a completely separate WIFI IOT network , I come of my main ISP router into TWO network routers , one for Home and one for IOT , that way NO IOT traffic goes anywhere near my "Home" network.... BUT , if you could do a video on how I can setup a completely isolated VLAN/SSID for IOT devices using all the same HARDWARE as my Home network (planned to be UDM-SE when it comes out... and 4 to 6 extra AP's) , that would be a great setup that we all could benefit from , something WITH monitoring of the IOT traffic but without any threats if a IOT device was to go rouge.... I think some IOT security videos would be great for your channel and something much needed on youtube. MANY thanks in advance, Best regards, Brad
I wish I saw this video earlier for this awesome piece of tech draw #dreammachine #wifirouter #unifidreammachine The fact that you get all these powerful features in 1 small package is the winning feature. Its like the saying "Dynamite comes in small packages!"
Thank you Network Chuck and Happy New Year. The coffee pot we love and use exclusively is the Bodum Vacuum Coffee Maker. It offers the unfiltered taste the we both enjoy, but I think the secret is that the Water never contacts the grounds at boiling temp. And....my organization uses AnyConnect, but site2site sounds much better. Pura Vida mi Amiga.
I recently got myself a UniFi Dream Machine, I love how simple it is to setup and the amount of features I have compared to my ISP router! However, this doesn't have the option to use UniFi Protect unfortunately. I don't have space to mount a 19" device (otherwise I might have gotten the Pro version of the Dream Machine), I assume the Cloud Key Gen 2+ is my only option to use UniFi Protect now? Perhaps an idea for a follow-up video?
Man I just found your channel and it's awesome, really liked this review/tutorial but any chance you could do a comparison video between the Dream Machine and the Amplifi Alian Router, PLEEEAAASE? Keep up the awesome work!
I was setting up some WiFi plugs that would not connect to the router with the 2.4-5 gig combined. I had to separate it in the router for them to connect. They were pretty cheap.
First @NetworkChuck I want to thank you for the education and quality of your work! It really shows you care about this stuff. I'm contemplating the Dreammachine vs something PF Sense and I think you have sold me on this one. #DreamMachine
Loved the video!! We have a lot in common with geeking out on networks so I’m going to look into CBT. I actually have a MSP Corp but my CTO (who knew the tech) didn’t want to pursue the MSP path. He’s an 8-5pm kinda guy. Thanks again for the awesomeness!
I know you said the dream machine doesn't do VPN however on their website it says that's a feature - HIGH‐PERFORMANCE ANTENNA 802.11ac Wave 2 4x4 MU-MIMO for 5 GHz and 802.11n for 2.4 GHz - PROCESSOR ARM Cortex-A57 Quad-Core at 1.7 GHz - ADVANCED SECURITY Gateway with IPS and DPI - ETHERNET PORTS 5 GbE Ports: 1 WAN and 4 LAN - VLAN SUPPORT - Security and Traffic Management - SECURE COMMUNICATIONS - VPN Server - QOS Enterprise VoIP
Hey Chuck I noticed during the whole video every time you go look at the web browser it shows that the connection is not secure. I apologize for the ignorance but all this is new to me

I love everything about it, but most of all I would love to be able to limit the online gaming for my kids...
#dreammachine
When I go on holiday, I like to take my wife-i with me!
that might have been the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life "these are my games!" @17:15
Fabulous video Chuck, I am a retired Network specialist and i always come back to your channel for updates and new info, i also just installed a new UDM in my home love it
Love your enthusiasm that you have in your videos, you really know how to express yourself :)
My router starting to crap out, wife is tired of the wifi dropping connections so we both agreed its time to order a new router so now i ordered this beast of a machine. I cannot wait!
Router came yesterday and by and far this is the best router I've ever used. I'm so happy with it.
One on amazon posted these issues:
"Issues that I had:
- UDM was almost centered at my home (location) but coverage seemed not good, had more dead spaces compared to my old one.
- UDM would dropped connection or go into high processing year (which caused internet out)
- TCP errors all the time"
Could he have a faulty unit?
I'm rather worried about weak signal-strength and noise, since the tiny AP I have right now has surprisingly strong coverage and no fan.
your videos are great and your voice is for some reason soothing but i love what you teach and how easy it is to learn and how fun it is...keep it up
Would be nice to see a video comparing the UDM to the UDR. Currently debating purchasing one or the other...
Thank you, just started to search for a solution to my old setup. I’m getting one as soon as they come available
Question
1. if it has a 4 port managed switch can i add a unmanaged switch and still mange them via dream machine ?
2. would two cloud keys not clash
3. best switch for small office unmanaged, manged layer 2
The other videos I have seen here on TH-cam were there have tried to make a comparison between these two has all been a waste of time 😊
I just wanted to ask you, have you gathered more information since you wrote this comment four months ago?
I'm wondering, I too have gigabit Internet but I was never able to reach close to gigabit speed for my speedtest.
Thanks Stephen! The Amplifi stuff is great for home. UniFi is more for enthusiasts who want to tinker a bit.
@@NetworkChuck are they still safe to use after they were compromised?
Chuck, the UDM isn’t enough for your gb network, check throughput when IPS/DPI is active. You need a UDM Pro that does 3.5gbs with DPI active
Great info and break down of the dream machine. Wish I would have found your channel earlier. Congrats to all the 3 people that won. I’m in the process of looking at doing a network with all ubiquiti stuff.
Way Way Way above the price point for anyone who isn't independently wealthy or also highly technical.
2x of them just arrived at home, I can't wait to experience them. The Graphical interface looks awesome. I agree with you the console would have been a plus.
How's it going so far? Any issues or still working well?
@@alrod9535 it works great, the Graphical interface is so easy to use (Do not use the "New interface). Compared to microtik and cisco, this device is very easy to use.
Great video, great product.
There was an awful lot of e-peen flashing going on, but hey, dude's put a lot of effort in, and he's proud of it. Good for him.
French Press -- 8 O'Clock - Hazelnut
been my go to for years.
I saw two of your videos before and find myself scratching my head as to why I did not subscribe neither of those two times. Just did!
5:08 the only reason I always set my routers to separate the dual band is because some of those "smart" devices like the wifi plugs/light strips/etc require the 2.4GHz, and I've not found a way to get that working without having the separate channel for it to choose from in the setup.
Your videos are great and very useful , you have a great voice for this kind of calm delivery , easy to listen to for longer periods of time
- I think the unit for me with be the "yet to be released "UDM-SE" , I think the UDM form factor with POE on the unit for adding Access Points and the LCD like the Alien unit will be the way to go
- Why do you think there has been pictures and model number floating around for so long without a product release ? and insight on timeline ?
- UI seems to have no WIFI-6 hardware , (Unifi 6 Lite rumored) , only on the Amplifi consumer side with Alien , but their Amplify seems to be under a Firmware crisis at the moment with performance, interoperability and stability issues all over the place... anything that needs to be rebooted more frequently than Environmental events like the occasional power glitch from the utility every 6 months or so is NOT ready for primetime use...)
- Do you think UDM-SE will be WIFI 6 and they are holding up for a FULL Product Line refresh to WIFI-6 ?
- Could you please make a video on how to share a printer across multiple VLANS , would be useful for Printer access from GUEST WIFI and then if I segment my home office traffic from Kid's traffic from "general traffic" but would like the easily share a printer across all VLANS. I have searched and no good videos on this and your delivery style would be a good way for me to learn this
And lastly , something we are all now dealing with now , IOT....
MANY thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Brad
I wish I saw this video earlier for this awesome piece of tech draw #dreammachine #wifirouter #unifidreammachine
The fact that you get all these powerful features in 1 small package is the winning feature. Its like the saying "Dynamite comes in small packages!"
Love the Ron Swanson shirt, great video!!
I searched for this very comment before making it myself. Lol.
Ubiquiti is slick. Favorite grind: Gardelli coffee / espresso. Daily grind : The Barn Berlin in Aeropress.
Pura Vida mi Amiga.
half of the reason I watch your channel is your beard man. I am sold for this router, perfect timing for the upgrade.
I got one and i got it to work without the isp modem, direct fiber in;) i got 2ms delay this the the fastest internet/wifi i ever experienced🤯
I love the video. What makes you personally go from this solution to a more robust solution? Obviously capacity. What else beyond that?
You sir, are guilty in soothing me into buying one, got it today, will setup this baby once I’ve moved in a week 😌
Awesome review. Thanks for saving me the CLI trouble cause I’ve been at it for hours
I’m shopping for a new WiFi 6 router and I really love the information you explained on this Video
Thank you
Wi-Fi 6E is launching in 2021.
Have you checked out the Unifi Dream Router? It is supposed to be Dream Machine's successor. I know Dream Router supports Protect.
I love senseo coffee. The machine makes the coffee creamy texture without adding cream. It’s a Swiss based coffee
I've had mine since beta and love it!
I have the Amplihd - i have it running through my Watchguard T15..love ubiquiti products
Love your conversational presentation style.. very informative. Keep it up.
I know you said the dream machine doesn't do VPN however on their website it says that's a feature
- HIGH‐PERFORMANCE ANTENNA 802.11ac Wave 2 4x4 MU-MIMO for 5 GHz and 802.11n for 2.4 GHz
- PROCESSOR ARM Cortex-A57 Quad-Core at 1.7 GHz
- ADVANCED SECURITY Gateway with IPS and DPI
- ETHERNET PORTS 5 GbE Ports: 1 WAN and 4 LAN
- VLAN SUPPORT
- Security and Traffic Management
- SECURE COMMUNICATIONS
- VPN Server
- QOS Enterprise VoIP
Hey Chuck I noticed during the whole video every time you go look at the web browser it shows that the connection is not secure. I apologize for the ignorance but all this is new to me
I love this company. I don't even own their products (yet).
