  • Sometimes simple is better and when it comes to a fun on-road kit to build up, Tamiya is a great company to turn to. We managed to get an early release of the new Tamiya Subaru BRZ ZD8 TT-02 Kit. The TT-02 chassis itself is not new. It’s been around for a while and has proven to be a fun build model that performs really well for it’s simple design and suspension set-up. We actually recommend the TT-02 a lot for those looking for a kit to build. Luckily there are a number of body options for TT-02 kits and here’s one more with the BRZ body. This video is a quick look at this car and how much fun it is to drive stock out of the box.

    TT-01 and -02 are great entry-level kits, and I agree they have their place. Not everything needs to be top of the line racing grade. I started with a TT-01 I bought used for $60. Upgraded to brushless, adjustable suspension arms, changed diffs and driveshaft, oil-filled shocks, changed bodies & wheels... still hasn't cost me much over all!

    I just finished up a RX7 TT02 drift kit as my first rc build and it was easier than I was imagining. When I first opened the box it seemed pretty daunting but once you get working it goes by super smooth. On par with putting together a Lego kit.

    Wow, just from looking at it I'm genuinely impressed with it's out of the box performance. Subaru's last gen BRZ is one of my favorite cars and I recently stumbled across this kit on Amazon around the same time I was looking to get back into the R/C Hobby. Ahhhhh! I'm love! 😍 About to order a kit rn!

    Another thing most people don't realize, with a set of hard plastic tires, these cars make for great beginner drift cars! I bought a set for my GR Yaris TT02 (same chassis, different body) and it slides just as good as my friends AWD drift cars, for easily half the price they paid. $10 will get you a ball bearing upgrade for your driveshafts and axles, and another $15 will get you some oil filled shocks for the car. Fun to rally around in the dirt, on the road/concrete, and especially fun to drift on a track or around the driveway!

    Nice to see someone genuinely enjoy a stock TT02. Most of them are highly modified. I would really like to see you do a simple comparison, since you have 2 of them. Stick to a simple track layout and give one of them ball bearings, after that an upgrade for the steering and the next time some oil shocks. Then we could see if these upgrades really does make such a noticeable difference in performance.

    • @xb5883
      @xb5883 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ball bearings I think yes always but the stock friction shocks work great for this kind of chassis

    TT-02s are a hoot. Like you said most of what you're buying is in the gorgeous lids. I built a '99 WRC Imprezza a while back. The kits practically fall together and while performance isn't stellar, they're a riot to drive (my only real grievance is steering angle and there exists remedies for that) and near impossible to break. And of course the dirt cheap price point really seals the deal. Probably the best entry level 1:10 tourer out there. Thanks for the awesome content, Greg!
    P.S. I actually have a time lapse of my build on my channel.

    Good day. I was wondering if you had a good idea for a new chassis build to go with a body that I acquired. The body is an Austin Healey 3000 that I want to make look like my grand fathers car(which my parents still have). I am thinking either a rally car or street car(not a drifter). I am not sure which chassis would be best for it do you have any good ideas? Thank you

    Nice video, I have not built this platform before although I have built several Tamiya cars. Quick question for you, my son got me the Comical Frog for Christmas. For painting the body I want to use the White Tamiya paint. If I back it with the black pain will that look bad or should I use a gray paint to back?

      Buy two cans of the base paint. I’ve had a defective can once and that made covering my car that much harder. Usually you can get away with using just one can but yeah, I had a defective can of paint that didn’t have as much gas inside as the other can I used so I recommend getting two cans to ensure you’re getting the proper amount of coverage BEFORE you back it or the backing color WILL bleed through.

    • @taimaishu-nao1922

      If you’re going brushless, you’ll need a brushless ESC.
      For me, I’ve built a TT-02 with the Tamiya ESC and another with the Hobbywing 1060. The 1060 might seem like a better ESC but is limited to brushed motors. The Tamiya ESC, namely the TBLE-02S, is capable of running a 10.5T sensored brushless motor up to an equivalent of 8.5T with advanced timing, though good luck finding the Tamiya fan unit for the TBLE-02S for cheap, if at all. TBLE-02S was superseded by the 04S which has provisions for aftermarket 25x25mm fans. Neither of the Tamiya ESC’s can run on LiPo without having to manually check the voltage manually. The Hobbywing 1060 can run 3S LiPo with built-in battery detection and low-voltage cutoff.
      As for if the chassis can handle brushless, it absolutely can with those plastic gears! Just use a 27T 42P pinion with the TT-02 high speed gear set though or the car will seem slow. The standard gearing for the TT-02, excluding the TT-02B and Type-S variants, is slow with the Torque Tuned and the Sport Tuned isn’t any better either unless you add at least the high speed gear set.

      They are. I've been researching them for about 6 months, Greg has some awesome videos. From what I've seen, it's a fun and easy build, the hop-ups are everywhere, with tons of body options for the chassis. You can set them up to drift, rally, and road bash.. As soon as I have the cash, I'm buying one.

    • @robbryan3044
      @robbryan3044 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The TT02 is, definitely, a fun build. However, our of the box, it does NOT handle "really, really well", despite the claim in the video. Truth-be-told, out of the box, it handles quite horribly - the 'friction' shocks are garbage, the included ESC is a total joke (at least the Tamiya ESCs are...the Hobbywing ESCs being included in many newer kits is considerably better), and there's so much 'slop' is the steering iI'd dare/bet anyone to drive it in a straight line for more then 15-20ft at full throttle (you can't, as it WILL vere to the left/right - notice, in the video, it's always being turned).
      However, all is not lost, as you CAN turn the TT02 chassis into something worthwhile. Tamiya produces a huge collection of "Hop-Up" parts (oil filled shocks, aluminum turnbuckles, etc) that can turn the chassis into a highly-drivable chassis. On top of that, there are plenty of 3rd-party parts that can make the car even better. Yeah Racing even had a complete "conversion kit" ($200), which towns the TT02 chassis into a very competitive RC chassis (something you could actually compete with in GTA & USGT classes).
      The point is, out of the box, while it's an incredibly fun build (over this past Thanksgiving, my step-Dad & I built two of them, side-by-side (his with several of the aforementioned 'Hop-Ups' & 3rd-party parts, mine with a combination of that Yeah Racing Conversion Kit & Hop-Ups)), it's not very drivable...but, with a few Hop-Up parts, you can easily turn it into something very drivable. Out of the box, the Traxxas 4Tec 2.0 Chassis makes for a better, more-drivable, car...but, with a selection of Tamiya & 3rd-party upgrades, not only can the TT02 equal (or be better than) a stock 4Tec 2.0, it'll cost you less than that 4Tec. For someone who wants a fun (albeit, not very drivable) kit that's easy to build, and very inexpensive, any of the TT02 kits is a great way to go. Then, you start adding upgrades, and, over time (or, if you can afford it, all-at-once), you can turn it into something semi-great. 🤙🏼

      Ask I guy that has two of them and built a third for his nephew. I like them a lot. Sure, there are a few things about them that put people off about them but anything negative come from people who actually own them. I have a TT-02R clone which I call the “TT-02R (Plus)” because mine is literally a clone of the TT-02R which is an absolute beast of a car but mine has a few other upgrades that take this chassis to the next level.
      Point is, they’re an affordable chassis to get into the hobby and you won’t have to worry about it if you decide that RC isn’t for you. But if you do like RC, this chsssis is easy to build, easy to maintain and upgrade.
      To base a decision on whether it’s “fun” or “good” isn’t accurate because that all depends on the person driving it. I like mine and I do think they’re good. Your mileage may vary.
