It could have opened and carried on as gently as it began and still been a lovely song. At about 1:33 there’s a sudden pull into something that no longer feels gentle and beautiful, but a yearning to express a deeper feeling, of pain or yearning and it’s just stunning. It reminds me of where in Kate Bush’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ the harmonies are deliberately sung harshly, and express powerful emotions. Different technique here, but so achingly good.
