I found the English audio and western guitar for what is an old era japanese supernatural show distracting honestly. The song is fine but it didn't belong in the context of this anime in my opinion. I mean even when Mononoke went with an accordion effect there was the understanding that it worked for the quick and light hearted tone of the show. This song just kinda feels like they picked it because it happened to be popular at the time. I always skip it when I watch the show.
@@Chromeberd I can see where you're coming from but I actually had the opposite feeling, and it's one of only a couple openings I don't skip as a result. I think this song perfectly complements the tone and atmosphere of Mushishi: tranquil and relaxing, but somber and lonely at the same time. Something I've almost come to expect from anime is an upbeat pop single in the opening which often clashes with everything else, but with Mushishi it sets just the right mood for the stories to come so it's always felt natural to me despite the difference in time period (although the otherworldly setting of the series has always been sort of displaced from time in my mind anyway). I wouldn't say the same for the intro of the first season though, I share your thoughts more for that one.
@@dailyderealization120 I mean, I can certainly compliment it for not going with something more traditional in anime. You don't see western songs very often in openings. And you are right, it's a softer toned song that compliments the shows tone as well. But I think something less focused on a specific situation that this songs lyrics imply would have worked better. As well as something a little more gaged towards the shows supernatural tone. As an example there's a reason why X Files works so great since whistling isn't a traditional instrument and the rhythm and unusual tones do a good job at giving off something not of this earth. Shivers is just a little to set and seen as a sad song about a specific relationship. Which doesn't really translate well to me as something that conveys what Mushishi is entirely about. As I said before though. It does reflect the overall tone that you're not going to see much action. And it's a safe choice as far as something that won't grate on the watchers nerves so it gets that much right at least.
a childhood friend of mine had this song in a playlist she'd made me years ago to 'cheer up', and here I am listening to it again because I miss her dearly. she passed away a couple months ago and now I can't listen to this song without tearing up, I just hope somehow she knows that she meant a lot to me and she was one of the most precious friends I'll ever have.

I hate her and love her at the same time. I just want to hurt her right now to make her feel how I feel but I am controlling myself. I sent some nasty messages and haven't talked too her since. Even though they gave me a lot of emotional trauma, I am over it and get nostalgic about some topics. I am married and have 2 kids, and I wouldn't change anything about my situation for fear of losing my wonderful kids. I still can recommend: don't let your hate consume you. In the end, after many years, hate disappears, and you are left with good memories and nostalgia. tell her you didn´t mean those messages and that you would like to talk again when you are emotionally healed.

She cheated on me so I don't see myself ever talking too her again. I think the comment I made was a week after the finding out the truth. I have accepted the person I loved is no more and I will cherish all the moments I had with her because I was happy. I mourned the relationship and it was hard but I have gotten a lot better. It's life i guess. She had changed completely and it wasn't hard to accept that fact and talking was detrimental to me because she tried gaslighting me and blaming me. Savin, we have a similar name lol. It means that they hurt each other, even though they loved each other. They probably went through a nasty breakup and were always trying to make the other feel jealous or hurt. The writer of the song regrets doing all of that, realizing that they still love the other. She is with someone but she will leave him if he takes her back. She can never let go of him. She shivers from his love.
The director of the show was actually asked this question last weekend. He said that he wanted a song that didn't necessarily have related lyrics, but evoked the image and the feeling created by the show itself.

I was going through a bad break up when I first started watching Mushi Shi and I cried the first time I heard this song. Fast forward 4 years and I’m soo much happier than when I first found this song. I just wanted to remind you that pain is temporary, the only reason you can truly enjoy the highs of life is because you know what it feels like to be low. It will be ok, just trust the process.
As a young man in my early 20's, I used to wet my eyes listening to this but now in my late 20's I don't feel anything, I hate it, I hate this lack of feeling. This used to be my favourite, I want to feel this song again.
"Shiver" is referring to that particular feeling similar of butterflies, that essence of comfort and warmth when you're deeply involved with someone else. However, this is no simple romance. Themes of a short-lived affair and heartbreaking nostalgia are brought forth based on the woman's melody and the lonely man strolling along in the video. "And we broke everything that was right, we both enjoyed a good fight." Notions of an affair is evident when she refers to breaking moral values. She was most likely married to another person under certain circumstances but she was willing to put up a "good fight" for the one that she truly loved. "And we stole every moment we had to make the other one feel bad" These nostalgic vintage scenes were these getaways that she had with her lover, these "moments" were the places that they both shared, alone together in romantic bliss. "And I'll shiver like I used to-And I'll leave him just for you" These lines reinforce the woman's desire to leave everything in exchange for experiencing that wonderful feeling of romance. *Halfway through the song, subtle changes in tempo and repetition in the lyrics conclude the outcome of their relationship; "And if we turn back time, Could we learn to live right" Yes, she did experience this passionate romance with the guy but it was short lived and never lasted. By the lines "learn to live right" she and her lover made the mistake of not pulling through with their affair; to pursue their passionate romance. If they could turn back the clock, would they have been able to avoid that mistake and pursue happiness together despite complications and obstacles in their situation? A line from earlier on in the song help support the notion that they could not fulfill this passionate affair: "And we hoped that we could be what we knew, It never turned out to be real" They were both involved in this affair but knew in reality they could not stay together for long. Something was holding them both back; if the reason wasn't because the woman was married then it is most likely due to the possibilities of her already having children in her marriage. The woman is singing from a place of romantic nostalgia and melancholic regret. The old man strolling through these scenes is her lover, the guy she could only spare a few moments of bliss with. He too is heartbroken, through all of his years he still comes by to the places and locations that he shared with her, the woman that he truly loved. Despite their complications in their relationship, she too still sings about and longs for that "shiver", that ecstasy of falling in love. While it might have been years and years after, they still share the wonderful memories and feelings of what it means to be in love. The crux: follow what your heart tells you, or else it will bleed with regret and depressing nostalgia. Well, that's my interpretation anyways lol. Great song, love Lucy's voice.

I think that it is because the affair could not be fulfilled that the lines "and if we turn back time could we learn to live right" appear: while it didn't go through properly, perhaps it would've worked out if they got another try at it and turned back the clock as you said. So I think that the earlier line "and we hoped that we could be what we knew, It never turned out to be real" is more a statement of how it worked out in reality than support for the notion that they could not fulfill the passionate affair even if they got the chance to redo it. Yes, it didn't turn out well, but the later lines "maybe we could learn to live right" are there to show maybe they would've achieved success with another chance.

It's funny though, this is still a very popular style. It actually shares a ton of sounds, and its entire chord progression with the vast majority of pop-folk music popular today. As far as I can tell, this barely defies the cultural standard, which is what makes it stand out, but also makes it a great candidate for being a part of the popular canon.
This song/ music video is incredible. I see it as a story if regret. Oh lovers lost to time. There are two sides to love; his and hers. The music, that's her. Young, but wise. The video, that's him, old remembering the love of his life only after his life itself seems fleeting. Amazing. Sorrowful, melancholy, yet hopefully. Certainly a masterpiece

Found this song from the anime series "Mushishi 蟲師" 13 yrs ago when I was in middle school. This song used to give me a feeling of tranquility with a bitter taste. And as I have grown up, it reminds me of all the regrets in my past. "If we turn back time, could we learn to live right?"
As a self-loathing teenager, who is lonely more often than not, someone who has never experienced love in this way, I find this song gut wrenching. And it is just beautiful. It saddens me that people are obsessed with the mainstream pop music, most of which are quite uninspired, whereas they don't appreciate music like this.
It's sweet that even after all these years he still cares for her in his heart. It really is. Because I can totally relate to the idea that true love never dies. But I hope this is only something he does like once a year to remember her. Theory time: The song is from the girl's perspective, after they've broken up, but before this video takes place. It describes a time when they were both blissfully happy. This is what the flashbacks show us. She is reminiscing. She still loves him and wishes they could get back together. The video, however, is from the man's perspective. If I were to guess I'd say he's come back to this place in her memory as she has passed. They never did get back together, and it's clear that he loved her too, wishing the same things she did in the song. The two people that loved each other never got back together and now she is dead and he is dying. This is a tragedy.

And bare with me here.... About the sexual relationship between a daughter and her father I know, I know gross right, especially for a song as wholesome as this but hear me out. The lines "and I'll shiver just for you" "when we were alone" says that when they were alone together, he'd ya know... Do stuff, and why would she shiver? Out of fear? or anxiety? Of course it could be when a lover touch's you you'd shiver a little. But the following line also adds questions. "And I'll leave him just for you" what does she mean here? Will, now as an adult she leave her current lover to be with her dad again, to shiver like that again? But after watching the MV again and reading ur comment I don't think my theory holds up. I used to listen to this song with my wife, she was the girl of my dreams, we both had problems and couldn't always get along, I hoped our spark could keep going, but eventually it died out, we had two little kids under 2 years old, and she left, because I wasn't good enough and couldn't show her the love I truly have for her. Since she's heavily underrated, I give my utmost thanks to Mushishi's promotion. Now I'm following her and loved most of the music she composed.
I found her the same way, and Lucy Rose's songs helped me get through the most difficult times in my life.

I have accepted the person I loved is no more and I will cherish all the moments I had with her because I was happy. I mourned the relationship and it was hard but I have gotten a lot better. It's life i guess. She had changed completely and it wasn't hard to accept that fact and talking was detrimental to me because she tried gaslighting me and blaming me. Maybe in a few years I will wonder how she is doing but I don't think I will care as much.

Savin, we have a similar name lol. It means that they hurt each other, even though they loved each other. They probably went through a nasty breakup and were always trying to make the other feel jealous or hurt. The writer of the song regrets doing all of that, realizing that they still love the other. She is with someone but she will leave him if he takes her back. She can never let go of him. She shivers from his love.
I don't know how this came to be the theme tune to Mushishi, but i'm glad that it did.

Notions of an affair is evident when she refers to breaking moral values. She was most likely married to another person under certain circumstances but she was willing to put up a "good fight" for the one that she truly loved.

So I think that the earlier line "and we hoped that we could be what we knew, It never turned out to be real" is more a statement of how it worked out in reality than support for the notion that they could not fulfill the passionate affair even if they got the chance to redo it. Yes, it didn't turn out well, but the later lines "maybe we could learn to live right" are there to show maybe they would've achieved success with another chance.

As a self-loathing teenager, who is lonely more often than not, someone who has never experienced love in this way, I find this song gut wrenching. And it is just beautiful. It saddens me that people are obsessed with the mainstream pop music, most of which are quite uninspired, whereas they don't appreciate music like this.
It's sweet that even after all these years he still cares for her in his heart. It really is. Because I can totally relate to the idea that true love never dies. But I hope this is only something he does like once a year to remember her. Theory time:
The song is from the girl's perspective, after they've broken up, but before this video takes place. It describes a time when they were both blissfully happy. This is what the flashbacks show us. She is reminiscing. She still loves him and wishes they could get back together. The video, however, is from the man's perspective. If I were to guess I'd say he's come back to this place in her memory as she has passed. They never did get back together, and it's clear that he loved her too, wishing the same things she did in the song. The two people that loved each other never got back together and now she is dead and he is dying.

I used to listen to this song with my wife, she was the girl of my dreams, we both had problems and couldn't always get along, I hoped our spark could keep going, but eventually it died out, we had two little kids under 2 years old, and she left, because I wasn't good enough and couldn't show her the love I truly have for her. I can't believe I messed this up. This song was everything to me at one point, always made me think of her, I wish I could have her back. 😔 (This happened a month ago) I won't ever be able to forget her.
