That guy wasn't prepared to talk about veganism. He clearly had one argument ready to destroy veganism and once that was dealt with, he was clearly out of his depth.
It’s not immoral for omnivore’s to eat animals. End of story. An animals evolution is not their fault. Vegan diets are nutritionally deficient for this very reason - we aren’t herbivores and thus can’t get all the nutrients we need from plants.
guy wasn’t ready to have his mind changed at all. it’s definitely a process for a lot of people. there’s still a chance he may come around to veganism, but he’s going to need some time to reflect when he doesn’t have all these eyes on him and he’s able to free himself from his ego a bit. it’s actually scary how people just blindly follow what society has laid out for them.
its not about having an argument, like if he want to not be vegan then thats his god damm given right, now stfu and go eat some buckwheat and let us eat what ever the fuck we want
@@131 That's true. Seeds were planted. Even though he was annoyed. But I guess, getting annoyed is often what makes people rethink in a silent minute *why* they got annoyed in the first placed.
When will they learn!! It's guaranteed that the person who doesn't eat animals has thought about the eating of animals infinitely more than the person who does. Are there any philosopher abattoir workers?
Living with "I agree that's it's wrong but I'll still do it" doesn't last too long. The discomfort he was growing through is a sign of hope that some day he may go vegan.
It doesn't always happen. It's important to consider peer pressure. The carnivores often come from carnivorous, unquestioning social environments. I, actually, hate it when people say things like "You wouldn't know it wasn't meat!" because, most of the time, they are going to go straight back to "I couldn't kill for myself. I know it's wrong but, if I don't think about it, I can still do it." That's the dominant pattern in my experience. The 'dissonance' just becomes more entrenched.
"Im still gonna eat meat" he says rifht after saying he agrees with Ed's previous point. Translation "I know I'm wrong but I won't admit to it and change becsuse being stubborn and saying I'll continue to support an unethical industry makes me look "tough" and "strong" because I'm disagreeable. If I agreed with you and changed people watching this video would think I'm "weak". The other translation that correct at the same time is "everyone I know eats meat. I am a yolo fomo type. I only live once and have a fear of missing out. I don't want my corpse loving friends or family to look at me funny for being vegan or make fun of me, because I have no backbone or true self confidence to defend myself and realize they make fun of my veganism because they feel challenged and insecure, I just want to fit in and not have the status quo who've put a "stigma" on vegans to judge me or not hire me or laugh at me". This guy is so pathetic. Keeps saying "im still gonna eat meat" even though he agrees with Ed's points. Anything not to seem agreeable and change on camera because society thinks being agreeable in ANY situation even when one is CLEARLY wrong and everyone else is rifht, looks "weak"
Well, it actually does last long for the vast majority of people. Also, we have to consider that people are not actually honnest when saying they care about animal welfare. Sure we all do to some extent, but the more I debate this topic, the more I realize that there is a strong social desirability bias that leads people to overstate their "love" for animal. Don't get me wrong, I still think dissonance is real and prevents some people from turning vegan, but I also think most people are fully aware of the consequences of producing animal products, and they just do not care as much as they pretend, or at least not enough to change their habit. They make their choice several times a day, and I think we gotta accept that most people do not change how they feel even when they are given more than enough information about animal suffering. Point is : you can realize something is wrong when going into a rational debate, but if you are not sensitive enough to that thing, you won't make the effort anyway.
"fish cant feel pain" "how do you know?" "idk, heard it from a fisherman" "what a convenient surprise that may well be" hahaha Ed you are so great. I respect what you do so much and wish I had the guts to face people like this, even in daily conversation I'm scared of either loosing friends or not having my facts straight.
I too was nervous once! You can do it, and any mistakes you make will just make you better at it. I recommend continuing to watch Ed’s content and others like it, and find your local outreach group. There are times when the subject comes up with people I’m close too and I’m really glad I have hours and hours of experience already from lower stakes environments.

@@rondarkman. how else do you get an idea out? Not just veganism but any idea. One has to spread the word and try to change people's perspective - which isn't usually easy to do. PETA relies on shock tactics which isn't very effective at doing anything other than making people hate PETA. So clearly other alternatives must be used. Sitting down with an individual and having a discussion on a topic one may not have poured significant thought into is a good way to get people outside their comfort zone and get them to hear and discuss with you. Ultimately Ed is trying to spread veganism but it's up to the individual to make changes. It doesn't work for everyone obviously, but having a calm, rational argument is better than fallacious logic or fear tactics: i.e. calling someone stupid
Not the brightest bulb in the dark room is he? I can FEEL his anger and crazy frenetic energy impulses building as his conscious is being dismantled. I believe he exemplifies what is actually going on inside each person. I give him credit for not running away.

@@turtleman8968 It’s not a matter somebody making a decision it’s a matter of being honest about that decision if you’re being hypocritical or not. You can see many people have posted beautiful heartfelt messages about the care of this man shared towards an animal yet they don’t extend the same consideration when it comes to eating. Does that make sense to you? If we don’t have to eat animals, but you clearly don’t, don’t you think it’s quite unethical and hypocritical to make something suffer and slaughter them against the world just because of a momentary pleasure?
@@rayvegan8587 Do you watch movies? There's alot of suffering in the Movie industry, alot of resourced that were gotten with abuse. Everything we do causes harm just because of a momentary pleasure? So what's the diffrence between bacon and movie?
Him, Der Artgenosse and Niko Rittenau (the last two both Germans). They wrote a book together. Don't know if it got translated in different languages though.
I remember after years of asking the same questions to family members, one day my brother finally said, "because I don't care." and I had to thank him for admitting that. That is solely what it comes down to. Thank you for making people think about what they are saying versus what they are doing.
Exactly. They come in with all of their arguments about the food chain, the overpopulation of animals if we don't hunt them, the nutrients that their body needs from eating meat in order to survive (despite all the vegans in the world surviving just fine), so on and on, etc. But once they see how those arguments hold no logic, they finally just admit that they like the taste, and simply don't care about causing animal suffering. And I'm like, oh okay well you could have just been honest and said that from the beginning instead of coming up with these excuses. They give up any logic and debate at that point, and simply resort to childish excuses like "I want my candy, and I want it now!" It's sad, but there will always be people like that. The guy in this video even states that he isn't a moral person, and that he does many immoral things. So just think about it, if someone is already immoral in other areas of their life, why should they care about veganism? They don't care because they simply cannot care. They are the types of people who only care about an issue until it affects them personally.
Seriously, I hate all those excuses. Just admit that it's not important enough to you. "I could never stop eating meat." Well of course you could, but you don't want to.
I think that’s just sibling snark. Kinda like when your mom keeps telling you to study because you’re about to flunk out of school and you say “I don’t care” (when you actually do care because flunking out would be bad). Or responding to “you haven’t cleaned your room in months, you don’t want to live in filth do you” with “yes, I DO want to live in filth”. It just means “I don’t want to admit it” / “go away”. People are naturally stubborn with family members to start with so they’ll say things they don’t mean just to make it sound like they disagree. They might start changing their behavior in secret before they ever admit it to you lol
It wasn’t. He blurted it out as if he hadn’t really given it much thought and was just as surprised as I was that he actually said it. Also, we’re way past that stage in life to have sibling snark. He’s 40 and I’m 39.
For the ones that have a conscience, yeah. For the ones that are sociopaths, those simple questions are easy for them since they don't have any morality at all.
To his credit, this guy is genuinely involved in the conversation and isn't treating it like combat. He's a good listener and acknowledges when Ed has a point. His ideas are at odds with each other, but he's being thoughtful about it. He'll come around 😉

Ed I have so much respect for your ability to stay level headed & calm when faced with people who are so infuriatingly stubborn. Even after all of their logic has 100 holes poked in it & their justifications proven to be hollow, they still sit there with a smile on their face like they don't give a shit about the massive hypocritical contradictions that they live their life by on a daily basis. Most vegans end up screaming at those people; and I can't say I blame them BUT it's not productive.. it only serves to strengthen their stance almost out of spite. Staying calm is how MLK was able to make the progress that he made. And it is most certainly not the easy way. It's easy to get mad. I commend you my friend
Why is it exceptional that he do? That he remains calm is a normal thing, those debater who becomes agressive not worth to go and say anything to other people, he can't change every person's oppinion on a lifelong habit, which most people actually do since human is a human.

I think they look at the debate's goal as convincing the meat eater to go vegan. The actual goal is to point out why he should in such a way that those watching the video might do so, and to plant a seed so that they might too.
As much I don’t like it I can see why they do it… to wind up some of the most self righteous people on the earth, and it clearly works. I hope someone who can see themselves in him looks at this and realizes that there are tons of logical reasons to question the meat matrix. We've all heard these answers: I like the taste. I love animals but I also love meat. Everyone else does. This is how it is. It's cultural. We always have. We are at the top of the food chain. I can and therefore I do. He's definitely being condescending and it's happening more and more frequently. I can't blame him. I went vegan like a year or two before him and also used to be (and still can be) really good at calm and patient conversations, but it's getting a lot harder. It starts to feel like people just don't care or don't want to learn anything that might change their mind and there's nothing you can say to help them and you just start to let that frustration seep out. I hope and believe it's a skill that can be worked on and improved over time and Ed is probably just going through a more frustrating phase right now.
I can't blame him, he's human like all of us, if you deal with people like this on a constant basis, you'll get more and more tired of hearing the same answers over and over again, it's frustrating working towards progress and seeing that nothings going to change or it's changing very very slowly is frustrating

If you know your facts and can draw some statistics it helps a lot. In the end I never expect the person to tell me he is going to stop eating meat right away. It’s about planting a seed and it will take years for most to change their ways. Be patient and understanding. It’s the only way if we want real change ❤🌱
The conversational skill where you can keep going back to a point in an interesting and level-headed way without jumping all over someone is a very impressive one.

And I know it's not farmed (Scottish Mackerel - farmed?) but it does my head in that we can farm fish but not farm their lab grown muscle mass. I'm waiting for a slab of lab grown, I don't know, Lobster. I did really enjoy the rare treat of Lobster, in the past, before I realised just how complex and interesting Lobsters are. As much as I loved to eat Lobster - there came a point where I absolutely could not put it in my mouth because it was too obscene. Put something with Lobster in front of me, at a dinner party or whatever, and it felt like I was being f***ed with. I was also being tortured - that's what it seemed like. Couldn't disengage my brain about Lobster.
@@batintheattic7293 Yes cheese takes a while... your weakness is tinned Scottish Mackerel. Well, that might take longer than cheese then. I am from a coastal region in France and decided to give in to a lobster dish once at a fine local restaurant. They presented me the lobster live first as they do in some restaurant before cooking it. That view put an end to my lobster consumption.
One important point in the discussion was skipped: why is it immoral to torture and kill an animal. The guy apparently thinks animals counts very little in morals... Thats the hidden issue.
It's incredible how you stay so calm discussing the same things over and over again. I hope at some point I'll find the strength to stay as calm and logical as you do when confronted with uninformed people. 💚
Always amazed by how you remain calm and rational. I have very hard time talking with friends and family about this, recently trying to escape the conversation which always starts when me being vegan am at the table (I guess that they feel judged even if i keep silent). Last time family's friends really wanted to argue, which we eventually did as they felt full of arguments on nature, sustainability, human right, health, biology... etc, but the whole thing started with me saying "at the end of this, in about an hour or so, your only point will be that you eat meat because you like it". Which eventually was what happened. For some reason though, this cognitive dissonance and contraddictions were never enough: in the end people are quite ok with it. I even feel that they're MORE ok, kind of forgiveful for themselves after aknowledging this contrddiction (as it was a little sin you'd be loving to yourself in accepting). Any idea to shake this "apathy"?
I feel you! Me and my sister are vegan, yet our parents are not. To them the only argument is taste and health, in which health can easily be debunked, I mean, it’s SERIOUSLY not a secret anymore that a plant-based diet is completely healthy. And the taste thing, it’s SO horrendous, especially when the same people then say, they wouldn’t do the same thing to a dog or would never ever work in a slaughterhouse and kill the animals themselves. The hypocrisy is SO big it hurts. The only thing I can say that might help, is really throwing the facts at them, and letting themselves come to the hypocrisy and flawed argument they have. I’d recommend watching Ed’s debates, which you already do, and his video on all arguments against veganism (It’s a TEDx Talk!) if you don’t have his book or don’t really like reading. This comment probably didn’t help you, so I’m sorry for that LOL. If you ever get good tips though, I’ll need them asap😭 Have a blessed day!! x
Honestly I don’t think the *apparent* apathy is as big of a problem as we might think. A lot of people are just like this guy. They acknowledge that it’s not moral, or sustainable, and that a perfect world would be vegan. Yet they still go on to eat meat because of the taste. But if I think deeper about this dissonance I can see, that our culture makes it incredibly difficult to be plant based. We have to change our entire lifestyle. He won’t consider being vegan not because he’s apathetic, he’s not, he won’t go vegan because he’s never had to try any alternatives, and if he were to do so he wouldn’t be able to eat out where his friends eat, or cook the only recipes he knows, or not have to worry what he’s going to eat when he’s out, he knows the ridicule that comes with it too… I think that simply making alternatives and vegan options much more widespread a lot of these “apathetic” people wouldn’t be so apathetic anymore, because they could still continue living their life pretty normally. Idk, like maybe he’s so hung up on the taste because it’s all he knows and has grown up with and trying to change it would be overwhelming. Most people only discover the possibilities of plant based food when another person exposes them to it.
I wish I felt better about deconstructing another person’s highly inhumane/contradictory beliefs, but I end up feeling sorry for them… Ed makes this look sooooo easy. I think in watching these, I get a bit more comfortable with it.

Compassion for viewpoint has to walk hand in hand with all of this. You take someone who has done something their whole life and held it to be true. It's the seeds of questioning it that may change their mind and open up new channels of compassion. I look back at the perceptions I carried through life. And it was through the compassion of the lessons that I learned that I woke up. But, I'm thankful for people who were patient with my perceptions and were full of hope.
Sooo satisfying the fact that Ed is armed with so much knowledge and facts, as well as being very intelligent and knowing exactly how to steer an argument and silence a challenger. Top content.
I'm at the point of veganism where I just can't listen to the BS arguments anymore lol I used to because I needed to hear the answers for myself, now it's just cringey and facepalmy the mental gymnastics that people do to defend their current habits... Thanks Ed as always xox
Thank You once again for sharing this. Ed has a lovely (and dare I say, BRILLIANT) way to approach the topics involved and sow the seeds of change for going plant-based. In this particular discussion, I believe the additional environmental impact and health aspects of going plant-based would help others to seriously consider changing.
In this debate I sit down with a student in Arizona who is also a keen fisherman. Things get a little tense at times as he struggles to grapple with his cognitive dissonance and defend his actions, which are in direct contradiction with the values he says that he has.

Common sense, the most uncommon of all the senses.
Living with "I agree that's it's wrong but I'll still do it" doesn't last too long. The discomfort he was growing through is a sign of hope that some day he may go vegan.
Think he's probably just gonna repress it unfortunately
It doesn't always happen. It's important to consider peer pressure. The carnivores often come from carnivorous, unquestioning social environments. I, actually, hate it when people say things like "You wouldn't know it wasn't meat!" because, most of the time, they are going to go straight back to "I couldn't kill for myself. I know it's wrong but, if I don't think about it, I can still do it." That's the dominant pattern in my experience. The 'dissonance' just becomes more entrenched.
@@batintheattic7293 I was like that for years but then I finally woke up

They give up any logic and debate at that point, and simply resort to childish excuses like "I want my candy, and I want it now!"
It's sad, but there will always be people like that. The guy in this video even states that he isn't a moral person, and that he does many immoral things. why would u even sit in front of somebody to debate them and then only have "because i like it" as your line of defence
Because many non-vegans feel that is ‘check-mate’.
I feel like at the end of the day these discussions simply show the different levels of empathy people have to their character
I'm a vegan and have (compared to many other non-vegans in my life) a relatively little level of empathy.
Another much more important factor, I think, is one's ability to determine their behavior and decisions by logical reasoning. That's clearly what the guy in the video (and I would argue humanity as a whole) lacks to a large degree.
Him: meat substitutes from burger King are gross!
Ed: what about the real meat?
Him: I eat other meat
How is he not seeing how hypocritical he is. Just because one thing is gross doesn't mean all vegan food is. So many people don't even want to try real vegan meals. Every time I go to a proper vegan restaurant I am amazed by how good the food is and can be, and how diverse! If only everyone tried it once for real..

@@darrylwolfe7359 that's not hypocritical. Liking the taste of meat is not a choice. I liked the taste but when I became aware of the truth I didn't want to eat it anymore. But that didn't change the fact I liked the taste. Does that make sense?

I mean maybe I noticed something only now and nothing changed, or maybe I (mis)noticed something that isn't there. If that's the case, I take everything back. I just feel like people start to close up even more, if they feel like the opponent thinks they're dumb or something similar. Especially people as stubborn as he.
I have a feeling it's going to come in phases. Like I'll have times where I can be super patient and understanding and times when I'm so sick of people and their apathy I just want to explode. I hope and believe it's a skill that can be worked on and improved over time and Ed is probably just going through a more frustrating phase right now.

They sit down thinking - it’s me against this guy, not realising they are about to go to battle with their own logic and morals
Yeah that's on them. Hoping Ed will sit down with someone who has thought it through.
I couldn't stop thinking about how his sideburn looks like Florida and now he'll forever be Florida Man to me
