  • What does an IT manager do in his/her role? What responsibilities does an IT manager have? I am currently employed as a Senior IT Manager/IT Lead since 2013, but also have a deep I.T. background as a system engineer and system administrator. In this video, I am sharing what a typical day in the life of an IT manager looks like. I share with you what tasks I have and how my day is structured.
When you get into IT you have a big selection of different career tracks within information technology. When I started in IT, I did not have any active plans to become an IT manager, but here I am - 22+ years later I am an I.T. manager - managing the global help desk for my employer. While my days are never the same, there are certain things that I would describe as part of the typical day in the life of an I.T. manager.
I manage projects and teams in different geographic locations. I use KPIs to measure the performance of those teams, but also to look at the performance of individual help desk team members. When managing people, an IT manager has to walk a thin line between being a friend, but also a supervisor. For me, people come first and I want to make sure that the employees that work for me, feel safe and support. When I was younger, I started out in IT as a help desk technician working on the phone in a call center. It has been quite an IT career for me and now being an IT manager I use what I learned over time to deliver the best IT service possible.

Thank you, I've been in IT Helpdesk for 20 years and am looking to transition professionally into IT Management. I do have management experience but don't have any certifications, degrees, or official titles in the role yet.

I would look into ITILFoundation as a start. This will give you a good insight into aspects you not have thought about before or seen before. Also, look into areas regarding how to manage a team and team building. Another area to consider would be project management. You do not manage people, but it is a great area to expand into and has some good certification options as well (PMP, Google Project Management, imp.i384100.net/m5JPN1) With your experience a certification in these areas should be able to open the doors to a new career path.

So glad to have found your channel! I’m interested in pursuing a career as an IT manager. I’m a senior in college studying information systems. Is this a position I have to work my way up to? If so, what is the entry level position you’d recommend. Thank you! Great video

A few thoughts. I think it is super critical to have a decent understanding of technology. It will make a big difference, may slow down your progress a bit, but I think it is worth it. Then go after ITIL (at least foundation) and ideally PMP certifications. Then also go after some sort of team management certification or course. This will be very important for you. Here is one that I like at Coursera: bit.ly/3BWAwe5 - You can also look into Scrum and Agile as it will help as well. Maybe do that instead of PMP and become a certified Scrum Master.
PS: I like Coursera as they have high quality classes and their prices are so affordable. The link above is an affiliate link, no cost for you in any way, but helps me with maintaining this channel. Thank you.
