PS: Your assessment of Walter's personality (and every other character's, tbh) is impressive, you two are very perceptive. I was on season 4 or 5 when I realized some of the stuff you are getting already about the characters.
But maybe people will tell you otherwise in the comments because a lot of people love Walter (because he is an amazing character) and they will justify anything he does. Even the creator of the show said that he was surprised of that phenomenon.

  • @Gunleaver

I don't think the moral of this episode is how nice Jesse is. I think it's actually the opposite. Where Jesse shies away from doing the direct violence, and Walt finds excuses to make Jesse do it so both of them can tell themselves they are morally better than they are, but in this one, we get a look at the other side of the meth business, instead of just the cook and dealers or the "fun" users like Jesse, Combo, Badger & Skinny Pete. Single guys, losers, whose addiction is easy to laugh off. But those are not the only kinds of drug addict, they are not the only type of customer buying Walt's product. The gross parents are also very typical drug addicts and meth heads. The mother's line, that she would be any kind of mom Jesse wants, for a hit, is very very true, and especially the ANY part. if Jesse wanted her to turn her kid over to a pedophile, she would. Maybe even murder the kid. For damn sure she's willing to risk the kid's well-being by leaving him alone in a filthy, dangerous, fire hazard of a house, while she's out looking for her next fix.
And Walt's & Jesse's business is supplying people like this is the drug that makes them such a menace to the kid, so willing to commit the kinds of horrible neglect and violence we see them commit against their family members.
Another thing to consider is that kid's situation and how badly his parents treat him, when reflecting on Jesse's relationship with his own parents. That willingness to do anything for a fix is why they are so hard on him, why they are desperate to protect their younger son from him, because they've already had experience of Jesse victimizing them, lying to them, maybe even stealing from them, and almost certainly, behaving in an appalling or frightening manner toward them. I don't think we see it confirmed, but their behavior is more than just disapproval, it's the behavior of who have been burned, and are desperately erecting defenses against the vulnerability to his lies or taking advantage of their parental instincts.
The difference is, the Pinkmans can say "no" and separate themselves from the addict in their family. The kid has no such ability.

    • @billbill6094
      @billbill6094 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I think this may be your personal interpretation on the morality of the episode based on the real world complicity of selling drugs. I don't think the episode implies much of that except the part about the parents. I think it's evident this sets a precedent of Jesse trying to do right by children, hating the corruption of innocence in a similar way he's currently being corrupted.

I mean its hard to say what really happened with Gretchen and Walt and Elliot. Gretchen said that she and Walt her dating and she went upstairs one day and he was packing his bags to leave. And then Walt said that it was his research that started the company and led to their success and that they shut him out. Well if that true than that horrible. Just because someone leaves you in a romantic sense doesn't mean you can go on in the company without them. But as you said who knows if that's what happened. Although it seems like it might be truthful
Because all we know is that Walt left her and someone got left out of their company going forward

    WHERE THE FUCK IS AVATAR

I love the double meaning of “peekaboo” here. Until this episode, the casual viewer might have believed that Walt was just a mild-mannered, geeky, good person put in bad circumstances, doing bad things only to help his family, and you might have thought that Jesse was just a druggie degenerate who is selfish and plays the more heartless side of the duo.
In this episode, you see both characters’ true personalities on full display. As shown in the heated conversation with Gretchen, Walt is resentful, egotistical and may have other motives for cooking meth than just to care for his family. Jesse this episode is shown to be caring, have a soft spot for kids (possibly due to his own childlike nature), and can’t bring himself to kill two junkies because he’s too soft to be a real criminal. He's too soft to even kill a cockroach; Walt would’ve killed the cockroach while Jesse is fascinated by it.

@@user-hp1up2rn1h that was supposed to be meaning of the episode, maybe the person who made the comment isn't 100% right, but her point is okay, why all the hate in your comments and hate for the characters? I get you love Walt, I love him too, but i'm not blinded by his actions. And even tho he didn't have order to kill, "I want you to handle this" clealry means "at all costs", at least to Jesse, he clearly was little scared and stressed out there. "there was absolutely no reason to leave him alive" what do you even mean, he isn't maybe the brightest sometimes, but this episode was supossed to show his soft spot for kids and his other side. I get you don't like him, but he became important to the show and without him, Walt's journey wouldn't be the same. , at least not at this point when they decided to keep him and he became big part of Walt's life. Maybe he did some mistakes here that could get him killed, but who wouldn't? He isn't strong build, he can't just handle this with viloence if he doesn't wanna kill them. He never really was in that sitiuation before, he didn't know that the kid will be there, so even Walt wouldn't be able to predict what could happen. I get your point, just I don't get why not be civil about it :)
And it's not about Skinny Pete in that scene, is about Jesse's reaction to killing even beetle, that means just that he is not okay with hurting even little things, it's not about showing Pete her. Jesse not killing the beetle was shown more than once in the show and even in the movie, so it's not like it's with no meaning.
I'm not sure if I will engage with more comments, just wanted to share my point, not trying to be rude :)

@@user-hp1up2rn1h What was shown in S1e5 was that Walt was prideful. We didn't know that he hated Gretchen and Elliot and we still believed that the money was purely for his family. I mean, in S2e1, he did the mental math to figure out exactly how much his family needed after he died. What we got in _this_ episode was a glimpse at his vitriol and resentment. We realize that the regret of his Gray Matter buyout intensifies his need to keep growing his meth business.
You're right that he didn't need to kill them, but that's what a successful drug lord would've done. It's what a Salamanca would've done. Otherwise, Idk what else about my statement about Jesse you're trying to refute.
Most people would've crushed the cockroach, whether it be Skinny Pete or Walter or the goddamn Dalai Lama. The point I'm making is that Jesse is kinder than the average person: not a good trait for a drug lord.
