@@poluticon If anything, shows should expand the use of this trope---cash in on its potential. A show: it's a man in New York, before he speaks he suit bespoke. He calls his mother in Virginia, she picks up. She lives in a yellow world. For the unaware, the sky turns yellow as you drive across the bridges from DC to Virginia. But for USA it's only Virginia and South Dakota that have the yellow filter, so once you drive thru to North Carolina, voila the sky looks like it did back in New York! You're back in *normal land.*
In case abuse of this trope has legitimately confused anyone: countries in the Southern Hemisphere, countries with violence and corruption, poor countries, hot countries, countries with a brown and/or black populous--their sky is actually still Earth's. When you're standing on Earth at a spot that is poor, dusty, and very very hot--unfortunately for some reason the sky gods do not come down to blanket you in the yellow filter that should always accompany sunny sweltering poverty. It appears that normal skies *aren't* only found in wealthy white countries.
Whenever I visit my family in the Philippines, I feel the lack of sepia's soft touch which, as an American, I know should be labeling the reality of my environment: poor! hot! brown! living in a shack that vaguely could be stucco/could be mud. My country is 1) that shack 2) dirt roads with dangerous gangs driving on them kicking up dust 3) more dirt roads 4) the jungle but that's not a part of the show. Maybe there's a goat.
What would happen if I looked up and saw a normal sky? What would happen if I see the *actual* surroundings instead of the artistic~ appropriate narrative Americans enjoy?? Like what if I looked out and it wasn't a dirt road but one of them fancy*ss Asian Haagen Dazs parlor bistros? What if I found out there are MALLS. Even millions of McDonalds and Starbucks. But...isn't it only dirt roads and unspeaking brown people afraid they next person they see by their isolated shack will be a hitman? And grassy tundra drenched in yellow if I recall driving scenes in BrBa. 😱If I discovered this was all a massive lie, a randomly fabricated insolent image, I'd have to go full Bruce Willis from the end of 6th sense. They got me: BrBa, LOST, Traffic, Arrested Development, yada yada yada.
Better Call Saul uses color washes appropriately, to denote the timeline to the audience when you're dealing with multiple level flashbacks. In BrBa, the writer's room must think the view from the International Space Station is wild yo.

    Who's to blame?
The dad for going back to a job that implies a lot of responsibility when he clearly wasn't mentally ok?
Walter for letting die (killing) a drug addict that was blackmailing him, potentially endangering his family and dragging his "son" into a downward spiral?
Jane for giving in after 18 months of fighting the addiction of the most addictive substance there is, because of a boy?
Jessie for fostering consumption on a girl that explicitly told him she was fighting addiction?
ALL of them, at some point had a moment of decision, an inflection point that changed everything else, and which choosing was solely under their power to pick one or the other.
Everybody is responsible for their own actions and their consequences.

I hate the character because they wrote her to be unlikable from the very first episode, and she never takes any personal responsibility for her own awful actions (and there are many). Walter at least has a conscience, he feels guilty, at least until far into the show when he no longer seems to care about anything but his empire, but even then he still tries to leave some money for his family, even if he doesn't get credit. He's a monster, but he learns his lessons and he's loyal.

Skyler just wanted to know what was going on and Walt wouldn't tell her the full truth even after she found out.
I dont care about the actress outside the show, she played her role and she played it well. What happens when she's no longer playing the character, I just don't give too much attention to unless the person did something horrific like drown puppies.

I don't think Jesse is a bad person, it's more complicated than that. Just because you do some bad things it doesn't mean you're a bad person. Everyone makes mistakes. And it's important to understand the background of a character before judging. For example, Jesse does drugs since he was a minor, he's an addict and he doesn't see the business as a bad thing because he was part of it and it formed his identity since he was very young. It even gave him his group of friends. So, making meth and selling meth, in his head, it's not a bad thing inherenty. He is a consumer himself, after all.
It's not until near the end of the series that, because of all the trauma he's been through, the consequences that he experienced because of this kind of job and all the death around him; he grows as a person and wants out of the business forever. Jesse is very young (24 years old) and naive for the most part of the series. So no, I don't consider him a bad person at all.

Why should Walter have told her anything at all, when she was already a narcissist at the start of the series? What sympathy could he have expected from her at all? When he does finally reveal that he is dying, she doesn't even try to see his point of view, she just makes it about her, and basically weaponizes his love for her to finally get what she wants, at the cost of his pain and trauma (which surely had an effect on his personality). We never see her struggle with any guilt. We never see her make any effort to understand anyone else, not her husband, not her son, not her sister, not her brother-in-law, not anyone. Obviously Walter is in the wrong, and he brought everything on himself, but funny how Skyler wanted to divorce Walter for weed, meanwhile she is a criminal herself and an accomplice for her criminal boss since episode 11 of season 2, when she decided to cook books for Ted because she liked Ted and wanted to feel herself important. Not to mention, that she continues to work for her criminal boss, and she continues to cook books for him and be criminal herself(again, she does it because she wants to feel herself important and likes Ted - selfish, egoistical motives). But when father of her children who she knows was a good man for like 15 years made a big selfish choice only because he thought that he was going to die, she doesn't even let him explain himself and acts like she is "so disgusted to be in the room with him", says that she "so wants to through up".)
Not to mention that Skyler puts kids in danger as much as Walter by not making deal with Hank.

The consequences that come from a white collar crime like hers are very different from a traditional one. There's a reason why she's not going to Hank: it's not the law or being a criminal that concerns her, it's the consequences of it. The drug business is dangerous...you're dealing with people that are likely to commit violence and put their family's lives in danger. Obviously weed isn't hard drugs, but to these people it is (think back to Marie asking Hank about autopsy pictures of marijuana users).

@@Camothor10 She's a terrible person, actually, and is from the very start. Total narcissist. Zero empathy for Walter from the beginning. Everything that happens, she makes it about herself. Not her kids. Herself. And causing significant pain along the way, especially to Walt Jr. And ultimately, she's content to be involved in Walter's crimes, and never takes any personal responsibility for anything she's done.
People dislike her, find her annoying, etc., because she's written that way. People are supposed to hate her. It's not a failing on anyone's part to do so. The story of Breaking Bad is a story about how a man like Walter White can become a monster. But he's already surrounded by monsters when the show begins. He's interesting because he's on a journey. He's not some 1-dimensional antagonist like Skyler who is only in the story to put him in tough situations where he's forced to make tough decisions and then try to live with the consequences. For example, why is the family in such a bad financial situation to begin with? She's an accountant, they make good money, and she's not doing anything else. She isn't working because she quit her job, voluntarily, then lied about the reason. The reason is because she was getting emotionally involved with another man at work. We never see any guilt about any of this. She lets Walter pick up the slack working two jobs he hates, indifferent to his feelings. Ultimately she uses her affair as a weapon to hurt and humiliate Walter. It doesn't even seem like she's acting on feelings for Ted when she does this. She does it out of spite.
A lot of the characters in the show are self-absorbed, sociopathic, crazy, or just plain evil. We're meant to like the characters who don't start out that way, and become that way by the end. We are not meant to like the characters who started out that way and never change. Skyler is the latter type.

She never appreciated the fact that Walter didn't want to see his family on the streets encumbered by debt after he thought he would die. She made very rash decisions and was never on Walt's side, she was never a partner to begin with and wanted to see him lose.

@UC_qk-qpZuc2KQJ8LwaxTinQ Exactly, I understand the need of divorce and she should call the cops if she was truly a good person, but she was a criminal before Walt was, she cheated on him with the boss/or tried to when she was pregnant, which is a little implied when she drops the stuff and he comes to her office, yet she was thinking that Walter cheated on her, she is a hypocrite and that’s why I don’t like her, she was always selfish and immature, even at beginning of the show, she was controlling Walt, she forced him to get treatment when he didn’t have money at that point and didn’t want to, she wasn’t working when he was, just fucking around in the house, when Walter had shit job that didn’t pay much, he wasn’t respected by anyone before the drugs, he was a loser in his family eyes etc. He finally “break bad” which helped him survive longer, of course Im not saying he is saint or anything, he dose bad decisions and then fucked up stuff later, first for his family and his treatment, he’s life sucked and of course he deserves what happens to him but not everything is his fault, Skylar at first had no evidence about his life, yet still refused to talk to him like some 15 years girl/boy, not like a adult person, she also was after his money and maybe didn’t truly loved him, she just wanted to control him, she should just divorce him and fuck off, but she doesn’t, she doesn’t stop him, she thinks she’s a good person but she is not, not as bad as Walter later but she’s still awful, I think I would like her more if she wouldn’t be so whiny and she wouldn’t cheated on him when she didn’t have any evidence on him, just to punish him, she always was this whiny and annoying character for me, whenever she interacted with her family, also she has the most cringe moments in the show (and I hate that word but it’s true) the happy birthday song, my god awful, if she would believe him more at beginning then when it comes to finding his secret it would be better in my opinion, maybe even writing her out of the story, Walter just wants a good life for his son, who later finds out and hates him would be interesting maybe even more that wife drama

I think the reason people hate Skyler so much is protagonist syndrome. Walt, while objectively having characteristics of a horrible person and a villain, is the main character of the show, and he has just enough of a good heart and good beliefs in him that it's hard to truly revile him as a monster. We are shown enough of his life and mindset to understand he's a man who's been stepped on, beaten down, and stuck in mediocrity for most of his life. We want to root for him because of this, and because he's the show's main focus. Despite the fact that we know it will lead to further harm and tragedy, people want to see Walt's drug empire grow. It's what makes him such a compelling character. So while Skyler's actions are completely understandable, people only look at her actions from Walt's point of view, as an obstacle, to his own success and to the family life he believes he is sacrificing himself for.

the reason, for all the hate, in my opinion. is that many people don't see anything that walter did so far as a huge problem.
Not even the drug dealing part is an issue for a lot of people.
To see Skyler treat him like a criminal while he is literally bringing home millions, is something a lot of people can't understand.
A lot of people feel like she sits on a high horse acting like Justice and Law are more important to her than her husband.
The way she acted like she was sick after hearing he produces drugs....
seriously...he didn't tell her "i murdered a bunch of people". which would justify her reaction.
He literally just said, i produce methamphetamine. And that made her sick to her stomach?!....sure....
it is her attitude that people hate

Also it is one thing to think in such a way about some guy.
But not the husband you have lived with for over 15-20 years and have raised a child.
i get it, you know what some drug cartels do.
But she knows him well enough to at least hear him out...^^
Also i am not saying that everybody feels that way. i am just saying a lot of people who hate skyler see it that way.
a lot of people take drugs themself. and they don't live in Columbia so they don't see any of the real crime. A lot of people would argue if it wasn't for the criminalisation of drugs, drugs would be a victimless crime.
Alcohol tobacco, marijuana in some countries. those are ALL drugs.
But no crime is involved because it is a legal business. Cartels exist because they are criminal either way, so why not go ALL the way and oppose the government. and obviously that kind of situation attracts the worst kind of people.

      @WhatIsNature 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@JoseRamirez-ew7vq I've got a few minutes. I'll bite the bait here. But first, let's take out the trash. Because you managed to squeeze quite a bit of it into your response. It would almost be impressive, if it weren't so sophomoric and boring.
1). Who comments on TH-cam trying to get laid? What fantasy do you have that allows for that possibility? It's difficult to effectively condescend someone when you have to make up a strange remark like that just to be derogatory.
2). This is very basic psychology (I'm talking 101-level stuff here), but people can be sexist against their own gender, or racist against their own race, etc. There's nothing in cognition to magically prohibit that as paradoxical. If you're still in school, try taking a psychology class when you can. Presuming, of course, that you don't want to be found making naive claims like, "women hate Skyler, therefore it isn't a sexist reason!" The logic isn't coherent, as it simply comes from a misunderstanding of the concept of bias. But to be a bit fair here, it is a common misunderstanding, so I can't be too hard on you for that.
3). Finally, it appears that you're an arbiter of determining who can be called a man. That's quite impressive. Though, you may want to keep that fanciful authority to yourself in real life. This is just a really basic social tip. No skin off my back if you refuse to take the advice. I'm just trying to help.
Anyway, now on to the meat. If you're so keen to defer to the writers of Breaking Bad, then it's worth acknowledging how **baffled** they were when they found out that **any fans** disliked Skyler at best, and hated her at worst. I mean... we're talking about the people who were smart enough to write something like Breaking Bad. That's quite telling to say that they were all perplexed by the audience reaction to hating Skyler. As such, disliking her character, even strongly, was an entirely incoherent reaction based on her behavior.
It makes you wonder... if there were no good reasons to dislike her, then why did so many dislike her anyway? It's no stretch to reach the naive reasons that account for this, and "misogyny" is just one of them. Other reasons were that people rooted for Walt and genuinely became frustrated when any obstacle got in his way, just in general. Breaking Bad is old hat at this point, and you can find all the reasons that fans explained if you look into it. The reasons aren't elusive. They've been articulated and accounted for. There's no mystery here.
I still find it quite odd that you got so aggressive in your comment as to desperately plug your ears to the misogyny claim, but, like I said, just take it from the writers themselves. Here's one article where Vince himself says, in reference to the Skyler hate, "I never understood it." www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a851038/breaking-bad-vince-gilligan-defends-anna-gunn-skyler-hate/
Here's an excerpt from Gunn: “It was very bizarre and confusing to us all,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly when the “Breaking Bad” cast and creator Vince Gilligan recently reunited for an interview in honor of the show’s 10th anniversary. “It was a combination of sexism, ideas about gender roles, and then honestly, it was the brilliance of the construct of the show. People did find a hero in Walt, but they wanted so much to connect with him so viscerally that to see the person who often was his antagonist - therefore the show’s antagonist in a way - they felt like she was in the way of him doing whatever he wanted to do, and that he should be allowed to do what he wanted to do.”
Hell, here's a science journal about it: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19392397.2019.1630155
(Though the irony of sharing that source isn't beyond me--have you ever read a science article before? I've got a wild guess as to the answer.)
I'd include some more articles and sources for you to check out. But unfortunately, I'd have to presume that you're commenting in good faith to make that worth the effort. So, needless to say, that's a hard pass for me.
      Cheers, mate!

(they are done with the show so I'm not holding out on spoilers here) Well for starters Skyler starts off irritating a lot of guys because of her demeaning emasculating attitude towards Walt at the start of the show. She treats him more like a child. Hell she can't even give him actual sex on his bday she gives him a half ass distracted hand job. This would be bull shit on a normal day but his bday?! This immediately gives her a negative first impression. Then he gets cancer and she disregards his feelings entirely and its all about how she feels. When its involving a woman and pregnancy its all about the "my body my choice" but that goes all out the window when its the guy with cancer. Suddenly its laying a guilt trip intervention. He changes as anyone would when suddenly faced with death and life with little to show for it, but does she actual stick with him? No and this is the real kicker on why men hate Skyler. She's his wife, she made vows of loyalty to stick by his side through thick and thin. This is a problem for relationships that encounter such a life changing event, cancer or a disease, a death in the family these things have a habit of causing a relationship to fracture and dissolve, and the moment things get thin Walt going through this ordeal and how it changes him, without even knowing whats actually happening she goes out and starts flirting with other men. She wasn't even remotely aware of his illegal activities when that shit started. She's at this point already been flirting with Ted for weeks now. Not to mention a her throwing a very limited fuss over Teds illegal activities yet she's still pursues him.
Yeah you can say "oh she's doing it to protect her kids" bullshit she's doing it to protect her kids as much as Walt is doing it for his family lol. She's doing it so she can get divorced so she can go bang Ted.
People hate Skyler cause she's an emasculating Karen with zero loyalty to her husband. She's obnoxious and hypocritical.
Case in point see the flip side with Marie as the show continues. How her relationship with Hank goes his mental abuse and how she handles it... unwavering loyalty.

EDIT : I also think it's because she's often clashing with Walt, while the viewers want things to go his way. Ideally people would want Skyler to say with a smile "'oh I get it you were doing it for us, np it's all fine then :)" but she doesn't do that and that pisses them off

@@syabri2342 Many people think that Skyler is innocent; that is the main issue. If Walt was divorced or handed in to the police, most of Walt's destruction could've been avoided.
Instead, Skyler helps him build his meth empire.

Yes, the amount of hate Skyler got from the fandom since the start is insane and it has a lot to do with misoginy

Vince Gilligan talked about how the writers would intentionally write Skyler's character to make people hate her. When I watched the show the 2nd time I felt completely different about her as well.

of course it is always misogyny. if she was a man, it would have a reason.
but with women it never has a reason, its always misogyny.
give me a fucking break, half the people who hate her are women....
EDIT: the real reason, in my opinion. is that many people don't see anything that walter did so far as a huge problem.
And that made her sick to her stomach?!....sure....
it is her attitude that people hate. not her vagina.

      Skyler did nothing wrong.
People hate her because she is a women just for that, Jane acted the same way and people love her just because she was pretty 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Andrea was the perfect girl and people didnt give a shit about her

The first time I watched this series I hated Skyler. Second time I watched the series I was able to sympathize with her more. I've watched a lot of people react to this show and men seem to sympathize with Walt more and women seem to sympathize more with Skyler. The truth is it's a tragic story for everyone involved.

I don't understand the hate for Skylar as well. It went so far that the actress got death threats because of the character she played. Same case for the actor who played Joffrey in Game of Thrones.
