Aaaand now I want one. I think the only thing missing for these modern redesigns is thickening up the A pillars, as modern crash safety features make a lot of modern cars look beefier than they need

I had a Gremlin X back in the late 80's. Mine came from the factory with a 304 V8 is an option you left out. Mine was very quick with that V8. Did love mine and miss how quick it was for a stock setup. Mine was lowered and had wider tires and wheels. Mine was a custom painted one by the owner so it was a one of a kind.

A few years ago, one of the major auto magazines (can't remember which) did an April fools joke where they announced Chrysler was reviving AMC. They had fully modern versions of AMC's lineup and it was fully believable since this was in the middle of the retro styling craze. I would love to see AMC come back as a quirky EV brand. I think it would sell quite well. I doubt Stellantis would do it though. They have too many nameplates as it is.

In 1989 I acquired three Gremlins at the same time. Two were regular 1977 Gremlins that had 6-cylinder AMC engines with automatic transmissions but the third one was a 1976 Gremlin X and had a (dead) 4-cylinder VW/AUDI engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. After merging the two 6-cylinders I was able to take the pretty things from the Gremlin X and come up with one good car. It would pass all the newer foreign cars on take-off. The steering wheel is offset to the left so you have to get used to driving a bit sidesaddle. There have been tons of redesigns done over the years, yet none have been able to make that rear end look good. THAT would be something to see.

I like the idea of bringing back the simple, no-frills cars ... as long as the prices reflect that. Not everyone needs all the possible airbags, nanny devices, or luxury options. Minimalism is a good thing. No need for big power, big wheels and big brakes on an econobox. Do that on the upscale lines. And if you still want that on the no-frills cars, there's dealer parts/service departments and the aftermarket... as well as the parts yards.

I would like to see what the Gremlin would look like if AMC decided to use the Hornet nose up front. You would have to do a few of those since that Hornet grille changed a few times over the years.
It would also be cool to see the 1977 Gremlin with a 1986 Eagle front end on it as well with the quad square headlights.
There is a concept car Called the AMX GT that is a 1969 AMC Javelin with a Gremlin rear end.
I own a 1976 and 1977 Gremlin. The real car front clip (Fenders, hood, and grille) is interchangeable for all the years from 1970-1986. I could find those fenders and put them on for real, but that's a lot of hunting and fitting and messing around. It would be far easier to construct on the computer.
I like your concept here, but nothing beats those AMC rally wheels. I have some on my 1977.

The Dart split apart at the firewall, the Gremlin just accordianed....not pretty. No one survived in either car. Very cool! I think cars like this, done right, would sell like hotcakes these days. It really makes you wonder why such a large percentage of cars are so uninspiring and cookie cutter today. Some companies seem to have recognised this and are giving us cool cars (eg. Hyundai, ford to an extent etc), others are still stuck in monotony. Surely designing unique and cool cars is the easiest way to stand out and draw people to your brand ie. make things people strive to attain.

The proportions are a bit off....with this car..... They just chopped off the back of a HUGE american car to compete with the increasing european and japanese compact cars coming into the US.... They moved the back axle forward which looks bad.... Ugly does sometimes create an icon but they just wanted to keep the engine in a length wise configuration...probably to save costs.... but it doesn't look right to me.... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...that we can agree on ;-)...

The last-year Gremlin X - the starter model pictured - was a decently handsome vehicle to begin with. Hog out the 19th-century engine and replace it with a modern turbocharged 4, power will improve, weight will be much reduced, fuel economy will likely improve - not many downsides.
