    You're in SoCal, so you probably don't think much about snow, but the pole is great peace of mind for when camping in the snow. Even though it should slide down onto the windshield and hood, you still don't have to think about it closing on you in the night.

      Good point. I'm a skier and plan to use the Drifter on ski trips in the future so I hear ya on the pole. Wet snow can be HEAVY.

    The whole side-panel that opens on the GFC is a game changer to me.

    • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Until they fall off or you need to get something through the side and the side cage bar is in the way. The GFCs had a nasty habit of the doors failing at the hinges and falling off. They have recently rolled out a fix for it, but it took quite a while and left many pretty unhappy.

      @@TravelingNobodys word. I don't think I'd be able to reach into the bed with the bottom lip under the windows on the Drifter. I can reach over the bed-side without any camper on the truck, but if it was 2-3 inches higher I'd need a step or some'n, since I'm 5'5".

      @@ArbitraryLifestyle there is a standard step stool that folds out and back up for storage that most of the drifter owners use. I think it was $45, but it is pretty solid and my wife and I use it all the time. It comes in perfectly handy for what you are describing.

    Nice tour. What about when camping around mosquitos/no-see-ums? Great that windows have screens, but don't they all come in through the back of the truck or sides while you're doing stuff? Can't figure out how you'd stay bug-free?

    • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two things help with that. The newer versions of the Drifter have lower lighting that turns on as white or orange. The bugs are less attracted to the orange. The second thing is we now have a screen system from Strawfoot Outdoors that covers the entire entry into the shell. So we pretty much have a screen door.

I’m thinking same wheels and tires as your leer video also. 17” pro wheels 285 ko2 bfg. Thanks for the video. How do you like your long bed Tacoma? I’m trying to decide between the short bed vs. the long bed for overlanding. Obvious I love the utility of a long bed (for transporting lumber, drywall, large items and being able to sleep straight in the bed) but was concerned with the break over angle, turning radius, and general ride in moderate off-road terrain. Also, any reason you decided on a one side swing gate rather than a dual swing gates from CBI?

    • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never had any issues negotiating terrain in the long bed. We've done some decently tight trails and crawl some stuff with minimal issues. It's not a purpose built crawler, but it has handled everything we've thrown at it and I would definitely not trade off the bed length for a shorter bed if I did it again.

    • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, and duals are cool too. I just liked the C4 over the CBI and C4 doesn't make a dual. The shorter overall length would have been nice, but it's also another door to open when accessing the tailgate.

    • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The swing out locks out in the open position while we sleep. Technically I guess someone could close the gate on us if they really tried, but we camp remotely and that is incredibly unlikely. That said we did consider the potential for fire and we could easily get out either of the two side windows.

    • @TravelingNobodys

      I actually had a Leer before this with windoors as well. These FrontRunner doors are definitely solid and pretty secure. They definitely don't have any of the airflow that sliding windoor has. • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did a number of multi week trips. ON these trips we moved and relocated daily. Although much easier than a conventional ground tent, setting up and breaking down a RTT every night and the following morning got a bit tedious. We realized we wanted something even slicker that could also stand up to the elements a bit better than an RTT. So this was the answer. We also didn't have any issues with cracking on our shell.

      I lucked out and found a guy who was thinking of selling his. A little discussion with me and he made his decision. It hadn't even been put on the market officially. The Drifter would be tough for someone in a chair. The drop down of the tailgate and low entry through the back would be tough to negotiate. Not impossible, but something to consider. Something like a Four Wheel camper though, they have tall height doors that go low. Depending on the width, and the interior layout, you may be able to find one that would work well for your needs. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'd be happy to help you brainstorm to find something that works for you. 👍

    • @TravelingNobodys
      @TravelingNobodys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Allabilitiesoverland I'm trying to imagine it from the perspective of accessing from a chair. So I was imagining that climbing from the chair, up onto the tailgate, then into the bed under the height of the rear glass, then up into the bed could be difficult. As compared to a Four wheel camper setup that removes the tailgate and allows for straight in access into the camper at maybe a better angle. Again, I'm just imagining and you'd obviously be much better at determining what would work best for you.

      Taco_Nobodys well I know you don’t know my abilities but...... I am one of the lucky one that is able to crawl and stand for a few second. Those seconds helps big time. But the would wheelchair... I think ppl just assume wheelchair people are the same in abilities. I have a spinal cord injury. I was attacked by a bull when I was three. Thank goodness I didn’t die. Anyhow, currently I have a taco short bed. When I camp, I like sleeping higher. I didn’t get rooftop tent because the ladder wouldn’t work for me. Nor do I want drive around something that heavy and takes up my whole roof. The money alone is too expensive. Anyways... just to test it out before I make the big jump. I actually got a tent cot and put in my roof. Then I got a big strong bin I used for storage anyhow and used it as my stepping stone to get on and off my roof. Therefore I think the drifter be the same set up. But I would leave my wheelchair on the ground by the tailgate and always hope on one will steal my wheelchair lol. You can see my set up on IG if you’re curious. Or actually on my you tube too. I’m kinda getting start on you tube. Not that I want to be famous but ...... it’s a scrapbook of my so call Life.

      @@Allabilitiesoverland well, in that case, from the sounds of your abilities the Drifter may actually work for you. You can see in my video we have a fridge on one side of the bed. We actually use it as a step to get up into the bed and you may be able to do something similar if you wanted.

      No toilet in it standard, but you can add a cassette toilet to just about anything if you want.
