We hope you find the information helpful and thanks for tagging along with us as we get out, go explore, and leave it cleaner than we found it!

Vagabond Drifter Camper Setup Video Part 1
มุมมอง 26K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This truck is currently for sale as of 8/1/2021. Contact me for details if you're interested. We've upgraded our camper shell (among other things) to a Vagabond Outdoors Drifter Camper. The last video I did on my Leer 100XR was a decent hit so I figured I would do another one of the new setup. Hopefully you find this useful and entertaining. The Drifter by Vagabond Outdoors is a wedge style pop...

Shell and Roof Top Tent FAQ
มุมมอง 723K5 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm constantly asked about my shell, the roof top tent, and the pros and cons of the setup. I figured I may as well make a video on the subject. Hopefully it'll help someone who's considering a similar setup with their decision. It's not the greatest, and I'm no expert so take it all with a grain of salt and go easy. Incredible review…it should be a law that all products get this level of detail and honesty. Thanks man!
I've had a snugtop shell on my truck for years and never a leak not one. No dust no water. Nothing.
$2300??? Damn everything im seeing now is around $4000 unless im just looking in the wrong place. Oh those pre covid/biden prices. How i miss them
Hi there, 5 years later- how did this hold up without reinforcements to the shell? Any findings, reviews or comments on stability and longevity with this format?
I no longer have the truck and consequently the shell. That said the shell was holding up just fine and showed no issues structurally when I sold. Looking back I'd do it again.
Love the camper shell, hate the roof top tents.
Can anyone with this set up or similar share their year of Tacoma and fuel mileage?
I was getting around 15 mpg with this setup.
Thanks for your review. I’m going to get one! Was looking at the ARE but I like this one better!
Glad you liked the video. The prices since I bought have definitely gone up, but that is everything these days. If I were doing it again I would look at the RSI Smart Cap, RLD cap, and AluCab offerings. THey are all pretty stoiut and have soime cool options available that make them quite versatile.
Did the camper ever rub on the bed?
Actually yes. It had an overhanging edge that hung down over the upper edge of the bed and did actually rub some of the paint up above the taillights. Kind of a bummer for sure.
Shes a beauty
Thank you very much 😁🤙🏼
I'm still trying to come to grips with the Tacoma has a plastic bed and you must aid bracing to keep if from cracking...I guess TRD stands for Turd.
I think your exceeding the cap max weight
What was the total cost for tent and rack ?
I hate to say that it has been so long that I don't actually remember. I think the tent was like $1,500 and the rack around $800.
all kind of good ideas in this video, thanks!
@@martinchen3838 thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you liked the video!
just curious do you know what the dimensions are for this prinsu top rack? like i see on their website theyve got the 5.5' x 47 inch, 5.5' x 44 inch, and 5.5' x 54 inch?
I do not know the exact measurements of the rack. I have since sold the truck and no longer have access to it. In my notes it's just listed as a 6' Top Rack. I would call them to confirm fitment for your vehicle.
@@935AV thanks. its an amazing truck, a bit sad to hear you sold it!
@@michaelgutierrez6743 honestly we were sad to see it go as well. The new truck has been incredible though and it's been a solid upgrade.
$2300 dollar is stupid cheap!!! I just ordered the 180 in Canada and it cost $6500.
😲 Honestly you're not the only one who has told me the quotes they've gotten in the last few years and I'm in shock from that price. They have gotten extremely expensive.
Seriously I think it just those pre covid prices unfortunately. Here in the use I've gotten quotes for around $4500
how did you get the patches to adhere to the headliner?
Great video, what stiders are those. Thanks
They are Fabzone. You can find and contact them on Instagram. Definitely recommend. Solid product.
I want this build but for a single cab Tacoma 2001
That would be a rad setup!
Saludos, es ee fibra de vidrio el camper, aguanta esa caseta?
Yes, the camper is made of fiberglass. It held up to the weight of the tent no problem.
Great Review!
Thank you very much!!
I have the baseline Leer canopy on my 2023 SR5, but would really like to upgrade to this one. I checked out the Leer website, and can't find it anywhere.....think it's been discontinued?
I'm not sure if it's been discontinued, or maybe just renamed. My best suggestion would be to just contact a Leer dealer and tell them exactly what you want. They're usually pretty good about knowing the ins and outs of all the available options.
Did you change the leaf springs and if so, what brand did you use?
I did, a couple of times actually. In the end I settled on rear leafs from Dobinson's and Hammer Hangers from Archive Garage. Combined we had a really smooth rear suspension that articulated very well. My suggestion would be to take your truck to a truck scale twice, once fully loaded and once unloaded. Those two weights will allow you to see what your maximum, minimum, and average axle weights are. With that you can determine which level lead pack you need. They're usually sold in some form or regular, heavy, and HD.
I just got new shell and I’ve noticed on really rainy days it takes on water not bad but it dies leak right were you pointed out! So I don’t feel so bad the hear that they all leak👍🤣
Some people took that comment as a straight personal attack. It's wild and they legit got angry. I was just spitballing ideas on the video, but yeah they most all leak for sure in certain spots. Try some butyl rubber crammed in the front edge gaps. 👍🏼
Add some butyl where it leaks. Press it in just like puddy. Works great!
This I want but prices have shot up since then it seems. Got a quote for almost this exact model and setup for $3800!
Unfortunately that is what I've heard from many people. You're not the only one who's told me that prices have skyrocketed. It's unfortunate that the shells are so freaking expensive now.
How did you put the patches on the inner topper liner? Iron, Valcro?
The shell has the roof liner package and then we just put Velcro on the back of all our patches. They stuck extremely well. 👍🏼
This is a sick build man! Thanks for sharing and also being detailed with the features without fluff! Good job!
Hey thanks for the compliments!! I'm glad you dug the video!! 😁👍🏼
Great video man thanks sharing your sick camper top build!
Thanks! Definitely ordering up that mountain hatch tailgate upgrade for my new Tundra
They are a sweet upgrade for sure. You'll dig it. 😎👍🏼
Thanks for helpfull video How much weight can it bear on canopy
The only weight rating I could find is for the dynamic weight rating, which is 250 pounds. The dynamic rating is the weight the shell can handle when bouncing around down the road. I describe this more, and about the dynamic weight rating around 4 minutes into the video.
Great Info, Thinking of doing the same thing with my 2022 GMC 2500 with a ARE topper on it. Any issues with the topper since the build?
I have since sold the truck, but beyond what I mentioned in the video I never had any other issues. The shell was great.
You know if dynamic eight different for a short bed?
I do not know that there's a difference between a long bed or the shortbed dynamic weight rating. Sorry
Hey who makes those climbing anchors you have the P cord running thru you have in the interior of the shell ? Thanks in advance 😊
I got them on Amazon. They were Naxen Climbing bolts, then I just ran some p-cord through them. It worked great! amzn.to/48JVjBY
It sounds to me like the shell is waterproof, the truck box isn't
I should’ve bought my shell when it was $1800. I just got mine back in November and I paid about $3600 on my Silverado.
It's crazy how much they've gone up.
Nice bro I’m waiting on my 100XR. The dealer told me they would install the Thule tracks bc they wanted to make sure the rack would be center with my Cali raised cab rack but I’m sure it was bc they wanted the up charge me 100 bucks install. I am putting the universal prinsu cap as you have. I was told static weight is 600 lbs moving weight 250. I was told it was only 175 lbs….hmm reason I asked dealer was bc I need to calculate total static weight for rear suspension. A good idea to ask dealer to put 2 more bolts to anchor topper. Like your rig👍
Short bed ? Long bed? Did they say a difference?
My pickup is a short bed
What about the seals they make that people put by the tail gate that stops dust and supposedly water as well?
I used a few of those to seal up the tailgate as best I could. It helped, but wasn't perfect by any means. It's definitely tough to seal it up. Maybe you'll have better luck than me.
@@andyv619 I’m just trying to get tips from people who have more experience
@@blakelynch400 that was actually me as well responding up top. Wrong account signed in for some reason. Anyhow I used a lower tailgate seal that spanned from the bed to the lower edge horizontally and then bulb seal foam on the vertical edges. It helped for sure but wasn't perfect. It's definitely tough to seal up a topper on a bed, but not impossible.
@@TravelingNobodys any advice on a perfect seal? Or would that make it sit tight as well?
@@blakelynch400 here's the kit I used... amzn.to/45fRPVl
What the size for the topper rack ?
It was a Prinsu cap rack. They have a short bed and long bed version. Mine was the king bed version. I think it's 5'11"
Good review. I've always had canopies on my trucks as I live in the Pacific Northwest and I want dry, secure storage. My newest canopy, on my 2008 Tacoma, is the same as yours, and the windoors are absolutely worth every penny. I'm awaiting delivery of a 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-road quad cab long bed, and I fully intend to put a canopy on it, probably very similar to yours.
I'm glad you enjoyed the review! Thanks for watching 😁👍🏼
I know this video is about 4 years old but im wondering if you ever ended up having any issues with the cap supporting the weight of your tent or occupants. Thanks!
Honestly I really never did. The cap held up fine under the weight as long as the clamps were set properly. They were about the biggest issue that ever arose. If they were just perfectly clamped the shell could move while we were bouncing down dirt roads. It happened only once, and if the clamps were adjusted properly it was fine and didn't happen.
@@TravelingNobodys Thanks for the info!
@@varsityoverland no problem!! 👍🏼
Nice
Which slide needs to be opened to give bathroom andor bed access? And which slide mechanism is used?
My apologies, I don't really understand your question? Can you clarify?
This video highlighted a myriad of great accessories, thanks. I’ll never buy a cap knowing they’re not waterproof!
Your very own Mando Van 😂
I can run, but it's hard to escape the "Mando Van." 😂
it looks really good
Thank you!! 😁👍
This is my dream set up but with a reinforce shell and just a normal roof rack
Looking back on our truck this was our favorite setup we had. It was the cleanest stylistically, and was an incredibly efficient and functional setup. Lightweight and extremely capable off-road.
Nice review brother, are they make for F-150 too? Cool Mustache… awesome video
They do make one for the F-150.. 😁👍
How much is total height of vehicle include camp?
I do not know and no longer have the ability to check since I sold the truck.
Did you sell the Toyota?
We did. The time came and we moved to a different platform. I'm trying to make a discussion video on the decision soon.
Interesting…. No lose in clarity?
Nope. So far so good. It's crazy clear actually. No yellowing or distortion. I'll report back in a couple of years, but it sounds like it should maintain its clarity pretty well.
What's the fire extinguisher mount you're using?
It's a Drake motorsports mount. Rago fabrication also makes a similar one and I think there's some other knock off ones out there on Amazon.
