- After the cinema’s reopening since the pandemic lockdown, Pakistani filmmakers have shown resentment towards showing international films as it gives local films an unhealthy competition. Culture and film critic Rafay Mahmood explains the flaws of local cinema and what can be improved.

I feel Pakistani cinema will only grow if it has the freedom to pursue bold topics or societal topics. But the mullahs and culture police will clamp down on it. No director or cine artists will experiment when facing the pressure of fatwas. So art and in turn culture becomes stale.

Don't throw debris on Mullahs first let them teach them how to make a movie and how to pick scripts and tell them that you will never find these things in Bollywood so don't learn from them, they are a complete waste. make your valuable brand as you can see in the example of ertgural people loved it because they want to watch that type content and no one gets offended no fatwas were established. The problem is not with society problem is with moviemakers who don't know their craft.
@@adnanhussain6714 i agree with your comment on the state of bollywood. It is not something which should be copied. Problem is the industry, be it lollywood or bollywood, is a reflection of our society and people's tastes. The people want fluff and entertainment. Not everyone wants great stories. I feel lollywood has very few all round entertaining movies which make money for the industry and be fun to watch. Bollywood still makes those from time to time which keeps the industry going. In Pakistan, there is less freedom to create such movies or else they will be called vulgar.
So lollywood is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

True… imagine how many talented actors and directors are sitting in madrasas. Besides, a lot of them won’t even watch movies.
Bollywood has also been copying Hollywood and for a very long time made pathetic movies. Even now very rarely they make something exceptional. Yet they earn a lot of money, because their local market is huge. People will anyways watch. With money coming in, you can then experiment wihh new ideas. While as, in Pakistan, firstly, the local market is very small, and then a majority of the population is already anti movies.

@Pankaj Kumar 300 crores doesn’t mean the movie is a hit. As I said your local market is huge. Earning money in crores in such a market where people value masala over good content, is not a big deal. How many non Indians watch Bollywood movies ? How many Indians shows are watched by the world ? You know like Korean shows ? Tell me one Indian show which is famous worldwide ? Or even a movie? Please don’t say slum dog millionaire.
In times like these, the movies are available on all platforms. No one except Indians watch them. Because masala is all you can make. Pick up any movie from 80s, 90s, early 2000. It will either be a revenge movie, or half inspired from Hollywood or a blatant copy of Hollywood.
Very rarely a worth watching Bollywood movie comes out. And you know it very well.

The population of South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Karnataka is one-fourth that of Pakistan. Each of these industries makes more films and money than Pakistani films. Content and strong story-telling is important. Pakistan made great films in the 50-60s era.
Now entertainment is not depend only on films or TV dramas. Web series, Reality shows (singing, dancing, adventures....), Live concerts, Festivals, picnic spot, Sports Leagues, local Sports tournaments, local fair.... also important.
No artist has ever copied another artist successfully. Because copying artwork is still artwork which you do based on your current abilities

No movies, women not allowed outside without male escort. Women denied education and driving licences.
Only men's cricket is allowed.
Liquor and 5 star hotels banned. TH-cam and other social media apps banned.
The banks should give loans without interest.
Zakat tax should be collected from non muslims.
There should be moral policing everywhere and any violation by anyone will result in removal of hands, legs, eyes or even head also in public ground.

Pakistani cinema was doing great when comedy movies like Karachi se Lahore JPNA TEEFA IN TROUBLE and Janaan were playing and tbh I love all those movies its just sad that in Pakistan there is no interest in action aur drama Pakistani movies ppl only like comedies and I think that comedies is where Pakistan industry is best at so they should concentrate on it

i despise bollywood but i really dont think blaming bollywood is correct as i see in the comment section. admit it or not, to an extent ours and indian society/ culture/ issues are almost similiar, we have the same taste as them, may it be entertainment or food, have the same family values, almost same social problems etc. hence if we are to copy an industry it would be better to copy bollywood then other industries as it is similar to what awam wants. problem is instead of copying dil wale dhulaniya le jainge bollywood, taare zameen par, dangal, lagaan etc we copy run of the mill coolie no 1 type movies.

List of Problems with Pakistani Films:
1- Taking Inspiration from bollywood movies
2-Trying to follow their business model by making ghatia movies with item numbers (the reason this business model gets successful is because of their huge population meaning huge market with cashing stardom of salman shahrukh etc)
3-Nepotism, casting same actors again and again, no chance for new comers and by new comers I mean they don't take auditions of new actors rather they select or cherry pick "new" actors from their surrounding elite community
4- Pathetic Storylines
5- If by any chance someone makes good movie with solidline it gets ban in Pakistan because apparently our people get offended so easily
6- Actors can't act! Pakistan actors because they are product of nepotism or come into business because they have links and they are from very elite background, they usually cannot act at all
7-Lack of Ideas and creativity we Pakistanis even copy our awards and tv shows from India
Solution:
1- Just create your own content
2- Try New things, new movie making style, film making is like a canvas you can create millions of things
3- Bring in real actors, take proper auditions
4- Censor board should stop banning good films
5- That's it!
I agree with all of these. But Pakistan HAS pretty good actors who can act beyond our expectations but they aren't given the right direction or script and they have no choice. Also many of them are shadowed by NEPOTISM ACTORS . Thats the real problem
Good summarization. I feel bollywood is suffering from the same points that you have highlighted. Things are very stale and follow a set formula. Nepotism is rife. The media is also working with the industry rather than providing impartial critique of their work. Thankfully, people now have options. I see kids today watch korean soap operas and foriegn movies rather than watch our content.
Hopefully, that will force some industry insiders to reform. But i expect things to get much worse before it gets better.

Theres this persian movie called children of heaven. It has an awesome story, terrific acting and is made on a small budget. Its one of the best ive seen. Much better than those movies made from hundreds of millions of dollars. Pakistani cinema and society is only to blame for the industry's failures.

It's the mixture of writing, performance and production. Pakistani industry is horrible at being original, the industry can only survive if our technicians and writers are empowered. Plus, the audiences need to become smarter and support Urdu content more the streaming platforms that promote English stuff.
