  • Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the isolated fibular fractures or associated complex injury, the diagnosis, prognosis, and the treatment options.
Fibular fracture is usually a part of a complex injury; however, it can be isolated.
Complex injuries where a fractured fibula can occur:
    - Fracture of the tibia and fibula.
    - Ankle fracture.
    - Pilon fracture.
    - Maisonneuve fracture.
Isolated fibular fractures are rare, and usually the result of direct trauma.
The fibula is carrying about 15% of the axial load, and the site of the muscle attachment for the peroneus muscles and the flexor hallucis longus muscle.
When you see a patient that has a fractured fibula and no other fracture, make sure the patient doesn’t have maisonneuve fracture, especially if there is no history of direct trauma to the leg.
The x-ray shows the fracture to be rotational or oblique.
Maisonneuve fracture will need surgery to fix the syndesmosis.
An isolated fracture of the fibula would not need surgery.

isolated fracture of the fibula could be associated with a lateral compartment syndrome

I had an isolated fibular fracture years ago, and only just noticed a sort of hard bump on the fibula a couple years ago. Could that be scar tissue, calcification, where the fracture was? It feels "crunchy" when I rub it. Thanks!

When fibula bone is used as free flab to reconstruct the mandible, is the whole fibula gone from the leg or they use part of it?
One of the downsides using the fibula is the leg would hurt forever!!
    I'm suffering with that.
