    3:10 The schlemiel and the schlimazel are actually tropes from European Jewish comedy. the schlemiel is the one who spills the soup, and the schlimazel is the one who gets the soup spilled on him. Basically, it's the pairing of a clumsy person and an unlucky person.

    Also, Tony Jay was the voice of Captain Saladin and he was a legend kind of. He was a voice actor for Disney cartoons (2 major ones at that, hint hint, tease,) and was a well-known actor in film and television.

    Regarding “Girl in the Tower,” it was a very cool and bold move for Sierra to try to get fans to get radio stations to play it. That was creative marketing at its best for 1992, and imagine the publicity for this game, Sierra, and adventure games in general if it had worked as hoped! The Top-40-style end credit song tradition began with “Beauty and the Beast” in 1991. (I really wish “The Little Mermaid” had had one too, but that was too early.) I think the only possible reason the radio station plan backfired is that it was maybe too far ahead of its time. And that’s not a criticism either. Bold creative moves are where history gets made.

    • @ultimateninjaboi
      @ultimateninjaboi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hell, i actually first heard of the song/game because of it getting limited airtime on a local station back in the day. So, at least personally, the marketing worked. X3

    Having replayed all the King's Quest games recently, this one was still my favorite. I even played it twice because I got all the way to the castle before realizing that I'd screwed up the good path and wanted to get that golden ending. Great game, great cast, and Captain Saladin is the greatest character in the history of ever.

    Shamir Shemozzle is doing a poor job of trying to kill Alexander because he can't disobey Alhazred's orders, but Alhazred left loopholes (ie, he's not watching) so Shamir isn't even bothering with trying to kill him.

    this is a game with a magical teleporting map, islands referencing fairy tales, dog-man hybrid soldiers, genies, a literally land of the dead, people with wings, living greek mythology...yet the whole 'love at first sight' thing is too much to swallow? really??

  • @mik4k6
    @mik4k6 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dave Fennoy (the Pawnshop owner) was also the voice of the pirate whom Guybrush Threepwood had to trick in a card game to get a diamond. And, of course, voiced characters in Telltale's games - Lee Everett from *The Walking Dead (Season 1)*; Finch from *Tales from the Borderlands*; Bluebeard from *The Wolf Among Us*.
    HOW did *Don Messick* (Ali and the sense Gnomes) get missed by EVERYONE?! He voiced Scooby Doo, Scrappy Doo, Atom Ant, Booboo Bear, Hamton J. Pig (from Tiny Toon Adventures)... and THOUSANDS of other characters we've all heard. He's *THE biggest actor* on this game's cast list, but NOBODY mentions him.

    • @mik4k6
      @mik4k6 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mick For K-Six A side note about the Pawnshop owner - he was one of the most visited characters in the game, yet *had no name* until the KQ Companion gave him one. Sierra had some brain-damaged moments, even in their best games.

    • @pushinguproses
      @pushinguproses  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mick For K-Six Good call. I am glad people are bringing up more of the voice actors. Truth be told, I wanted to get across my own experience with the game and didn't want to focus on any one thing for too long including the voice acting, though clearly it's something people REALLY enjoy discussing. Just wanted to mention a small section, my favorite voices, and move on. Then people could discover more about the game if their interest was piqued enough to want to play it or look it up. And yeah, totally do recognize Dave Fennoy's voice from MI3 - it's actually almost the exact same voice. Love that game. Good insight! And yeah, Sierra had their moments. They aren't perfect by any means, but I love 'um anyway. Also, I would argue that Bill Ratner had a comparable amount of fame to Don Messick. He also has some amazing credits to his name and has been the movie trailer voice actor for a TON of huge films. :)

    • @mik4k6
      @mik4k6 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked up Bill Ratner's official site, IMDB, and a few other sites, but can't find more than 33 years of voices, and only about 46 roles listed.
      To put it in perspective: Don Messick, Daws Butler, and Mel Blanc were all comparable actors with 60+ years as the primary voice actors for Hannah-Barbera and Warner Bros. (Don and Daws tend to be mentioned together because of all their combined projects - Pixie, Dixie, and Mr. Jinks cartoons were completely voiced by those two, for example.)
      If you're looking for movie trailers and TV previews, look up Jim Cummings or Peter Cullen, and prepare to faint. XD

    • @pushinguproses
      @pushinguproses  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mick For K-Six Point taken. :)

    • @mik4k6
      @mik4k6 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      :) I like to support voice actors and their reputations as I can. :)
      Interesting fact: When Mel Blanc's wife was pregnant, he asked his bosses for a raise. The company couldn't afford it at the time, so they made a deal - there would be a "Characterizations" credit at the end of all of Mel's cartoons, which gave him more attention and work from other sources. That was their way of getting him more money to care for his family. That meant he was the first voice actor to get public credit for his work.

    The main thing I remember about this game is when you get the genie "drunk" with the... it was a mint, I think? And he's trying his best to tell the Vizier about Alexander's "magic smap." His delivery always cracked me up as a kid.
    KQVI was also the first KQ to use CG characters! Both in the intro cutscene and, oddly, when Alexander's walking around in the dark with a lantern.

    I really love the voice acting in KQ6 especially the Narator from his descriptions of character emotions down to his corny jokes really had me hooked on this game.
    I was shocked to know back when i first played KQ6 and then the 2015 KQ game that most of the voice actors were professionals mostly know for Disney and the late Tony Jay, OMG you can listen to him forever.
    This is truely one of the best point n click adventure games for me though I still love Sam n Max HtR.

    I am playing through them now and I would say that so far 3 is my favorite from the way it mixes mechanics and narrative. I actually was anxious as hell trying to make that stupid cat cookie thing while the wizard's timer ticked down. And in that game Alexander is such a sympathetic character. He's so kind to everyone despite being in such a bad situation. I actually felt emotions for a decades old computer game character lol.

    Funnily enough, my first time hearing "Girl in the Tower," WAS from radio play. One of my local stations, it turns out, was run by some guys who were already kinda into video games, and thought the idea of Sierra trying to get airtime was more charming than annoying. So the song would occasionally come up on rotation.

    TH-cam suggested your channel to me today, so I spent the whole morning watching your KQ reviews and related videos. Then I went to the beach with my KQ Companion, which I loved in eighth grade and definitely used to beat all the games from the collection I found on sale at the mall that Christmas after obsessing over KQVI forever (and singing the theme song almost as often as the end credits songs from Disney movies).

    I've been waiting for you to review this one! Definitely my favorite King's Quest game. Truth be told, it was the first one I ever played. I didn't even have a computer at the time... But my neighbor did! He had only two games Stellar 7 and (DUNDUDUDUN!) KQ6. He let me borrow it around 20 years ago and I still have his guide book/copy protection. Yep, I was THAT GUY. Anyway, he didn't care much for the game so I don't think he cared. When I did finally got my own computer, this was one of the first games I picked up (from my neighbor, hehe) and as you would say, "Oh man!" I played the hell out of this one. I remember once I had gotten really close to the ending and I screwed up and got locked in the dungeon. Luckily, I had saved my game. As a stupid kid, I only kept one save at any given time and when I went to his load, I HIT SAVE!!! I cannot express the pure rage I felt and I honestly threw a full fledged tantrum. I remember running outside and crying. That's how much I cared about this game. I know it sounds silly, but I was a just a wee lad at the time. When I finally calmed down, I realized that I pretty much knew what to do and I started playing again. I immediately got over the anger when I booted up the game again and it was almost refreshing to be safe and sound on the Isle of the Crown. That's a true testament to this game's greatness. I still play it today. Damn, I should save these stories for my own reviews. Anyway, keep up the good work, Roses! Love your work and all that!

    This was the only King's Quest I had played, back in the day. I had a small collection of totally random computer games that mostly came to me from my Dad. This....was not the best game for a kid my age, at the time, but I DID make it to the Underworld! I feel like that ain't too bad, considering that I'm pretty sure I found every single death up to that point. It was one of those games I kept going back to, though, so by the time I got to the Underworld I was a little bit older and able to understand most of the puns and things that would allow me to make sensible decisions.

    I know this is an older video but I'm going back through some of Rose's older content and just wanted to say how I always appreciate it when she sings.

    Idk if I've commented on this before but holy crap I adore this game.
    I'll often say it's my second favorite game of all time but really it is probably tied for the first.

    The Cliff of Logic was supposed to be the games copy protection? I didn't know that. I figured it out by myself but that took me over a week to figure it. I spent hours on that puzzle and it took a lot of writing to figure it out.
    I still remember when I finally got to the top and a feeling it gave me. A great sense of success and relief.

    Ahh, memories. My friend had this game but his 386 with low memory ran the game really slow and it didn't show the cutscenes. Luckily our school had a fancy new 486 with enough RAM so he brought it there and we played the game during recess. Never managed to finish it there of course.

    I gave up on this game as a 7 year old. Still want to come back to it some day. You know, now that I have a properly developed brain.

      PushingUpRoses Well, I do see the collection on sale all over the place. I suppose it's time to put an end to that chapter of my life, as I do have many memories trying to figure this out with my brother and sister. Thanks for the boost of confidence!

    I love that song so much. I even have it on my phone and listen to it from time to time.
    Such beautiful cheese-rock-ballad.

    Nice singing. :) I grew up on the Windows version as well, and I had the same reaction of "...wut?" when I fired up the DOS version in DOSBox at one point. Fortunately, I was able to get Windows 3.1 to run in DOSBox; I should find out if my old CD will install from it! (addendum...) ...or not. I no longer appear to have it. :( That's not something I would just throw away, maybe it's buried in a box.

    Jane Jensen... That nearly says all. Altough I also liked KQ 5. And YES I mean the CD version with the VOICEOVER and the town music. *duck away* And well the whole KQ series.
    I also have the "girl in the tower" CD soundtrack! :)

    This is the VERY FIRST KQ game I ever played. It was the one that came with the ultra futuristic computer my family has just bought which had CD-ROM drive! WOW! and it characters talked! I was blown away.

    I remember this game being one of the original pack in free games when you got a PC with a new fangled CD-ROM drive. Eventually 7th Guest and Myst would take that slot but I knew so many families that got this game with their first CD-ROM enabled PC. Mostly because as a Sierra loving kid, I knew the solution to all the puzzles. Made me strangely popular in my freshman year of high school.
