19:35 The Chevy emissions procedure is crazy. I had to do it once on a 6th gen Camaro ZL1. If I remember correctly it wants you to coast to a stop in addition to everything you mentioned. I had to go up a canyon highway and use the hazards on the shoulder. Also at 5am. It can’t be done anywhere else in a city.
Or you buy the cleanest example of a desirable vehicle that would have been more beloved in the past when people had disposable income to own it but can only yearn for it in the present and settle for a more practical economy car (Mustang GT, GR86, Porsche Cayman/Boxster/911, Chevy Camaro SS etc.)

Because the high selling collectibles are also low mileage never used examples. I’m not going to tell people what they should do with their money, but the idea of owning badass cars and not driving and enjoying them to me is just crazy town.
Really appreciated the deep dive into the EX-90. As a long time owner of a XC90, we've been waiting for replacement that was potentially BEV. It's disappointing to hear that even after having 8 years to improve on the XC90 which came out in late 2015 as a MY2016 vehicle. Pilot Assist, which we use in traffic and on long highway drives, sounds worse (since the old version allows hands off for about 10-15 seconds). Driveline; the twin-charge, even with the Polestar tune, is a disappointment. I was really hoping that the electric drive would solve that, because it's a great vehicle with a couple small glaring faults that seem easy to fix. Any comments on the window switches?
Heads up on the ECU and emissions reading, (NYS inspector) lots of newer cars, especially higher end brands, need special readers to access the ECU and read for emissions readiness. the state scanners can unlock all ECU's but you'd need something like an $400-$500 autel tablet for your business needs, post 2000's a lot of auto manufactures started locking down their ECU's to force customers to go to dealers and indy shops to pay for subscriptions to the manufacture to read codes from the car. Basic scanners can read the engine controller but only on standard canbus codes, if it uses those standards. As for the drive, during my dealer days in LI we used to take cars down any local state road with a 55 limit, 30 minutes to an hour would clear most cars, give you spaces to hit most of the requirements, especially if you get stuck behind a Subaru doing 45 in a 55 as is tradition. It's near impossible to do them in a city, my condolences on needing to do this in LA.
If you can get press cars and enjoy them for yourself without filming then have a blast. You don't owe your audience free content. Working for nothing is a young person's game to get started. You have paid your dues. Stay in bed a little longer and enjoy extra time with your wife. The crew show is great so I hope you can keep it going, cheers!
My thought as well. We don't have emissions testing in my State so I'm not familiar with the testing requirements or how to reset factory emissions, but on the surface I can see it working.
Not gonna lie, The Chevy Lumina is a dope AF car for a 1st car. My 1st car was a 93 Lumina and i beat the living hell out of it. I tranny dropped it every day, raced everything i could and did everything wrong to that car and it STILL lived. I dont think there is a car you can buy now that can even come close to how durable the Lumina is. I sold it to buy a Subaru and BOY did i mess up!
My uneducated guess with losing the ad gig: they probably double-booked (or over booked the talent) expecting someone to bail, and when too few bailed, because of the high earning potential, they realized the cost was too high, and they had to can someone, and they looked for an easy out. It's shitty, but I feel like it's the most likely scenario. Sounds like their mistake. You shouldn't have to eat that loss man. It does sound like bs.
GM does collect data, and in fact got in trouble for it. Granted, that was not for mapping purposes, but rather to sell to insurance companies and to market software services.
late to this one and catching up, but yeah as a contractor for ad agencies ur experience with that gig is unfortunately extremely common. more than half my leads end that way.
The crew shows are my favorite! Also that sucks to hear what happened to Matt with the business deal falling apart, I would have been livid. Insane that they tried to make you feel bad for THEM, i.e. "we only have 24 hours to find a new person for the role!" But to play devil's advocate a bit, unless you're a political commentator, posting anything political or controversial on social media is always bad for business. Especially when you get involved with advertisers who will shitcan you for saying something crass 2 years ago. Is it justified? Absolutely not, but welcome to the advertising industry aka Satan incarnate. Posting politics on social media is purely self-serving anyway and should be avoided unless politics is literally your business. I point to Doug DeMuro as a perfect example of how to handle social media as a successful public figure.
I'm sorry but I'd love to watch the video about and listen to conversation about tires. I think materials in this matter is your duty because of the name :)
The way you talk about driving in Greenwich blows me away since it's probably some of the worst driving in Connecticut 😂 Try up in the northwest corner more, Bethlehem is absolutely amazing for example Where do you drive in Greenwich that has trees lmao, it's just a nyc suburb
It is a New York City suburb with estates. Estates that have fields and woods and roads that wander between them. As Mel Brooks said, "It's good to be the king."
I appreciate Matt being outspoken. It’s very hard when you are trying to sell a product or service. Ultimately, you have to accept that some people won’t like your opinions and that will cost you some business. Sad but true.
In all honesty , don’t get the R rated tyre. I did this some 25 years ago on my 928 S and it totally changed the whole feel of the car. Ruined the driving experience, stick with the S. yes, much more expensive and it’ll wear a lot quicker but the feel. The feel is why you’ve got a car like that, pay the extra.
The discussion about the over-reaching safety features on the Volvo reminds me about a lot of the criticism with Chinese cars sold in Australia/New Zealand. They have a lot of safety tech, but it's not very good, especially around driver awareness monitoring. Most of the criticism is around it being over-reaching or getting in the way, and also hard to properly turn off. With these Chinese brands, some of those issues are almost excused because the cars are so much cheaper, or maybe the automakers haven't adjusted their systems for the roads/driving styles for the AU and NZ markets. So it's interesting to hear a premium brand like Volvo would also have those issues. I wonder if those safety systems are Volvo developed our adopted from their Chinese parent company, and carried over from another brand?
... the constant beeping and alerts in many new cars can be incredibly distracting, it may be more effective to focus on improving road infrastructure and other methods of transportation such as busses, trains, cycling, ferries and flying than overwhelming drivers with distracting tech ... so much blame on driving and the driver, as if they are the only piece of the puzzle ...
Not one to kick someone when they're down, but I hardly think it was "one" tweet from 2.5 years ago. There's a consistent tone in the now deleted Twitter posts and 5+yrs of podcasting that has grown exponentially vitriolic over the years. Guessing someone on high got wind of who was doing the project, they did 10min of research on the body of work, and that's just the one post they used to justify it. Between that and propping up the Ferrari felon for several years.
Traditionally, Volvo did do pedestrian safety crash testing for those outside the vehicle. And they were safer for pedestrians that the equivalent American/Japanese/Korean equivalent SUVs and crossovers.
Matt seems to struggle with separating his political life from work. Only now he is facing the financial consequences of this that he is aware of. The agency doesn't need to "go into bat for you" either. They are supposed to be neutral and Matt's perspective is that he has done nothing wrong and its someone else's task to comb his SM history, not him. Its the same with him talking about how a client at WCC on this podcast. No one says to him that he shouldn't. Don't tell me that instead of using a local Dyno to run a smog cycle test, you felt so obstructive that you charge the client your own personal hourly rate to perform this task as a way to put others off doing it. Then go on TH-cam to moan about this client and think that it will have no consequences now or in the future. Matt would you be as forgiving on yourself if it was an employee of WCC, Zach or anyone else talking about it the way you did?
Sorry about your experience with said Agency. 10 years on the agency side and entirely not surprised. Not defending agencies, those orgs are a shit show run on burnout thanks to low job security. Don't waste your time with them!
Feel bad for Zack, Matt’s never ending blind rage against Elon is such a stupid hill to die on. Feel like Zack may have tied himself to an increasingly unlikable sinking ship in Matt.
I feel like there’s a misunderstanding about how Tesla’s FSD system works and how it collects/uses training data. It’s actually quite mind blowing how neural nets and deep learning is being used.
You got 'X'd" by some body playing the games people play in that world. Daytime drama should stay on TV and leave you out of it. Sorry to hear it. Do what you want to do and move forward.
One would hope the corporate cowards would reveal themselves so we can boycott their products. If they are so anxiety ridden by 140 characters, perhaps they should let their customers take a similar stand towards them. Every reaction have an equal counter action. See Feynmann diagram from elementary particle physics.
No I disagree with your suggestion. Matt has made comments both online and on the podcast that have had a measurable detrimental effect on viewing figures of TST. Shrugging and blaming the algorithm has been easy. This example of someone not paying to work with them and giving the reason is a pretty hard example to dodge as the client specifically pinned it on Matt. If I was Zach I would have a discussion with him as this was not Zach's Twitter comment that sank the deal or is losing us business. I would have no sympathy for a right wing person making the same mistake, so why should Matt avoid Newton's 3rd law simply for his political standing?
@@fraserwright9482 did you listen to what they said? Assuming the agency staff did not gloss over facts and these two were honest, writing "licking the boot ..." is hardly to be considered offensive. Then you should shut down all governments because they use similar wording daily. Yet these companies gladly participate in that game, no questions asked. If companies of people are petty I want the open choice to be it too. Eleventh dimension karma and cosmic record to go full california hippie.
This is an easy way to get sued in Business deformation. The client has the right to walk away from someone if they feel it will reflect badly on them, they did this privately thru the agency before it happened. The agency has not used a public format, podcast or publication to contact TST. Ok Matt/Zach didn't get paid for the prep. Everyone shook hands and walked away. But they haven't been charged with the costs of the Agency in all of this or the client using the correct channels and Matt making that public. Matt laying blame on the agency for NOT spending time trawling thru his Social media or the podcasts. The agency's legal team will incorporate this cost to pay a legal firm to do just that to show they took a pragmatic decision to pull the plug and not incur costs to themselves or the expensive client. That isn't cheap.
@@fraserwright9482 someone with some sense. Zack really needs to sit down with Matt because the wagon has gone off the wheels the past few years. Stick to cars, this isn’t the Matt farah politics hour, and now it’s actually costing the company money.
@@fraserwright9482 We have the right to decide not to use the corporations product, if we decide the decisions were not in accordance with our values. It is not a one way street where people working under the guise of a corporation gets all the benefits and none of the costs. It could perhaps be we would not like to do business with the individuals of the team based on what we found out. Round and round it goes, until we do business with none as singularities in spacetime.
😂🤣 Matt losing business over his narcissistic hatred of X/Elon/Tesla is the biggest case of karma I've heard all year lmao. Everyone is allowed to chose what they like/dislike, it's a free country. But you don't have to continually shit on everything just because you have a massive bias.
I think Matt doesn’t factor in to his logic about the cars uploading road data is a lot of this stuff can be compressed into much smaller file sizes. Especially if it’s lidar point data instead of a raw video file.
the getting dumped topic really boiled my blood. it's fucking 2024 good luck finding anyone that has a following big enough to pay that doesn't have an opinion you dont like. the build up during the conversation was intense, i thought for sure matt being a liberal was going to have something to do with it but the elon thing doesn't surprise me at all. i have no opinion on Musk one way or another, i havent been on social media for almost 10 years at this point and never used twitter, maybe they'll hire me hahaha, wait nvm my name is Varg... 🤣🤣🤣 i really hope the next person they find has an even worse skeleton in the closet. his reaction to her not wanting to spill the beans was so east coast, i know matt is a CA boy now but that east coast "cut the bullshit" never truly dies and i'm all for it haha
Please don't do this. If Matt named the agency or client that is an easy way to get sued for Business deformation as he has done this in a public format. If they are nice they will send you a cease and decist letter. But they may choose to seek losses if they are pissed. This is normally when your legal advisor is telling you to shut da f### up, not speak your mind.

Maybe Matt should stop being so aggressive and political. Bit him in the Ass with this advertiser and is probably hurting his viewership as people don’t come to car content for political opinions. I enjoy the content otherwise, wish he could figure out how to bite his tongue and make this podcast somewhat apolitical.
I just enjoy watching butt hurt people getting triggered in the comments. People care way too much about what other people tell them to be upset about.

I think car reviewers liking plug in hybrids is like car reviewers liking hatchbacks. Nobody agrees and nobody buys them. If you need an oil change, if you can lose your warranty by not changing the oil. Nobody wants that nonsense.
Most car manufacturers have clauses in their warranty that cover negligent maintenance. If you never change your oil and your engine fails, don’t expect them to honour the warranty. That applies equally to all cars, not just plug in hybrids. Cybertruck owners are having major issues with warranty claims being denied for insane reasons. Plug in Hybrids are flying off the shelves right now, much more so than EV’s

I’m not going to tell people what they should do with their money, but the idea of owning badass cars and not driving and enjoying them to me is just crazy town.
Ferdinand Porsche was making electric cars before he made ICE cars.
He was also building hybrid gasoline-electric drive tanks during WW2 (Porsche Tiger and Elefant)
24:40 Could it be done on a Dyno?
An idea for Emissions test rent a dyno? Lol
Top Gear did a whole feature about when the modern standard for car controls became so, and a load of cars before that
Matt likes the I’m a douche glasses
I checked out that Shane Gillis comedy bit thanks to this podcast ep, pretty funny 😂
The way you talk about driving in Greenwich blows me away since it's probably some of the worst driving in Connecticut 😂
Try up in the northwest corner more, Bethlehem is absolutely amazing for example
Where do you drive in Greenwich that has trees lmao, it's just a nyc suburb
It is a New York City suburb with estates. Estates that have fields and woods and roads that wander between them. As Mel Brooks said, "It's good to be the king."
I appreciate Matt being outspoken. It’s very hard when you are trying to sell a product or service. Ultimately, you have to accept that some people won’t like your opinions and that will cost you some business. Sad but true.
@TheSmokingTirePodcast The “half helmet” is called a “beanie” where I’m from. I’m guessing that’s slang but I could be wrong!
Anti-MAGA fashion is wearing a face mask, alone, in your car. 😷
Matt definite wears a mask while driving alone…..he’s a genuine Cali libtard lol
"Unfinished"? You seemed to really enjoy the Vantage on your 2nd Take and F1 Edition videos.
brain bucket is the term you're looking for lol
No 4WD cars for Matt. Does this mean he no longer wants an R34 GT-R?
Don't worry guys there will always be haters, just do what you want to do without outside influence
Teslas do occasionally upload data, but only when the car is on wifi. And yes, huge video files sometimes.
Love the accent on the ad reads

EX90 the safest car ever made as long as you are inside it. Don't think about what will happen to you if you get hit by the 3 ton giant SUV.
@@flech3025 getting hit by a 3 ton SUV and a 2 ton SUV will yield the same results
If you are a pedestrian yes. But if you are in another car that difference could be huge.
@@flech3025 blame your government.
Traditionally, Volvo did do pedestrian safety crash testing for those outside the vehicle. And they were safer for pedestrians that the equivalent American/Japanese/Korean equivalent SUVs and crossovers.
Don't forget about the whole redesigning cars for pedestrian safety
Don't bank on back roads in NY being smooth!
Sorry about your experience with said Agency. 10 years on the agency side and entirely not surprised. Not defending agencies, those orgs are a shit show run on burnout thanks to low job security. Don't waste your time with them!
Red Lobster ad: Did anyone else wanted to vomit when Matt moaned "uuh my Goood"....?
Feel bad for Zack, Matt’s never ending blind rage against Elon is such a stupid hill to die on. Feel like Zack may have tied himself to an increasingly unlikable sinking ship in Matt.
I feel like there’s a misunderstanding about how Tesla’s FSD system works and how it collects/uses training data. It’s actually quite mind blowing how neural nets and deep learning is being used.

Matt has MDS…and he lost money over it. 😮
i really hope the next person they find has an even worse skeleton in the closet. his reaction to her not wanting to spill the beans was so east coast, i know matt is a CA boy now but that east coast "cut the bullshit" never truly dies and i'm all for it haha
Half shell
Why no time stamp?
If you really want to speak your mind, then name the advertiser.
If you're riding a bike on a four lane main road, when there's a bike lane one block over, then yes, you are going to be perceived as a less intelligent species of human. Darwin agreed.

@@perrosdemaiz I am sure the bicyclist would rather ride on the dedicated bike path if it is as convenient to their intended destination as the four-lane road. Much of this conversation revolves around "convenience," does it not?
@@perrosdemaiz "We bought you a bike lane?" Who is this "we?" If it is the tax payers that includes the bicyclist, whose taxes also paid for that four-lane road. @@williamgechtman9287 Well why don’t we let them ride their bicycles on the freeway then?
My point is that where there is a parallel facility, cyclists should be obligated to use it instead of the fast and dangerous four lane road. It’s dumb not to use it.

I respect Matt for not being a shill, and speaking his mind. Sticking to his morals. Not changing who he is to appease people who don't deserve to be sucked up to.
@@TakuroSpirit77 there is a difference between not speaking your mind, and biting your tongue to avoid bringing politics into the discussion when it’s unnecessary. Most people have been drowned by politics over the past 8 years, and would prefer it doesn’t also seep into the other content they enjoy. It’s not a political show, people didn’t come for political opinions.
@speaker54312 it's not even a balanced or nuanced discourse when it does appear. It's one way, all the way, trash half of the potential audience. Would expect the same reaction if the roles were reversed. The lack of self awareness and abundance of self assuredeness is borderline pathological at times. Never not wrong, and anyone who disagrees is something the world can do without attitude is why most episodes routinely fail to exceed 10k.
It sounds like it's time for the tst to be put to bed. Not worth your time anymore matt, think about how much better your life would be without youtube bullshit.
The Lumina sucked.
