Creating this video was a step in the right direction for me. I like documenting my progress and hopefully can continue to make time for more consistent BTS videos. This format is definitely easier than what I tried previously.

That 3rd interview was PERFECT!!!!! Loved the lighting and contrast and the doors/windows/cubicles/office gave it some texture.

Really enjoyed this! As a beginner, seeing lighting and camera angle setups is sooo helpful and this was honestly way better than any big channel video ive seen, so thank you! Would love an in depth sound breakdown/tutorial of how you record shotgun and lav simultaneously.

Great BTS of a professional production, its alot to get shots and equipment set up and checked then to shoot a YT vid as well solo. I've started bring the team to as many projects as possible to get bts and help out with time and efficiency.
Thank you! I recently hired a second shooter to get BTS. It wasn’t great (trying too hard to make things look cool). I much prefer the static shots and just narrate later for now. Simple enough and so far it’s been well received.

@@evanthecameraman Haha I used to run a video production company and it did not go too well. I was driven by greed and the idea of having a large crew. I hired people long before I had the funds to justify it. I respect you doing solo shoots like this, with quality gear that isn't more than is needed. Looks like you served your clients well.

Nice! Good tips for filming interviews.
You show, to perfection, there usually is nothing fancy in filming interviews bit it still can be enjoyable. Both for you and the talent.
You have a very "light" way of setting and filming, and this is much more interesting than the more-equals-better approach some try to establish as a rule. You show that, even in smaller size AV production such as corporate stuff, less-can-speak-better.
And that there is no need to throw magic dust into the eyes of the client, for them to be impressed or stunned... all it takes is a sharp video with crisp sound. Two cameras with lenses, three lights, two microphones, a few bits and cables : happy client, even though you did bring just the minimum.

I thoroughly enjoy filming interviews as it gives me an excuse to just talk to people and learn about them and what they do. Sometimes I want to purchase and use all the fancy tools money can buy, but then I remember two things. 1. It won’t make my stories better. 2. I can’t afford what I want anyways. 😅

I just subbed. I'll be retiring from my "regular" job before long and am looking to do this kind of work for additional income, and for fun. I do mostly local narrative stuff, but marketing work pays well, and I get to play with the toys again. I understand and appreciate being a one man crew. That's how I do most things in my life, and in film when I am not working on someone else's projects. I appreciate seeing how you do it. I hope to need an equipment truck some day as well.

I agree I love solo working and doing the interviews I love the challenge making people comfortable and truly become their companion rather than feeling like their interrogator. Lol no sand bags either, lights became powerful and lighter nowadays

Definitely a cool BTS video. The ease of that wireless monitor makes me want to pick one up! And how did you hide that lav mic? It looked like it took no time at all.
The monitor was a solid pickup. For the lav, I use Ursa Sticky Circles to quickly attach it between the buttons on his Polo. I’ll happily make a video on that if you’d like.

This is the 1st Video I have seen of your Channel. I like the way you utilize the angles for the Interviews.
1. Do you ever run a recorder between the mic & Camera as a backup or even seperate?
Also, since your a 1 man Op. do you use a remote to start both cameras at same time or are you pressing record on each?
Hey thank you. I definitely will run the mic into a separate recorder at times. I do not use a remote. I just press record on each but they use timecode so syncing them is incredibly fast and easy.

Timecode is to sync the 2 cameras as well as the backup lav audio recorder. The boom mic going into the primary camera is just a convenient bonus.
Good stuff. Was there not a way to get the glare off the side of the van?
We actually didn’t mind it. There was a skylight I couldn’t flag off even if I wanted too so no matter what we were kind of stuck with it.

Nice. Recently did an F1 interview where the producer said “they’ll have chairs for us. They have to”.. show up and no chairs. Long story short we had to interview Sergio Perez standing up. Well, headed to Walmart 😂😂
I’m telling you those folding chairs come in clutch!
great video! What light stand model are you using for hair light in the first interview?
It’s actually a light stand I took from a backdrop kit made by Morris & Co. Buying the backdrop kit is the only way to get the stands but they are my most favorite and have lasted 5 years and still going strong

All good! Technically everyone is new to my channel 😅 There’s a lot of reasons I use these cameras over other option in the market. BRAW is a codec I like working with for sure but isn’t necessary a top reason for me.
@@evanthecameraman Thank you for your response! It will be very helpful if you'll mention in your videos your reasons of choice the camera for your work) I've heard that Braw is very useful while editing in davinci (don't require decoding to editing codec or using proxies).
A tip for when you film people with glasses, whip out a circular polarizer to remove the reflection.
I always forget I have a CPL! It’s in the van too. That would’ve been the right move. Thank you for the reminder.

I do occasionally for more demanding productions. These types are just really relaxed.
Hey, I'm really curious about the last interview. How much power of the Forza 300b Ii have u used in order to expose properly for the background (outdoors)
I don’t remember what percentage that was. Maybe 60-80% and honestly it was a little too hot looking back at the frame.
Do you have to tweak the audio in post? It sounded really clean and clear when I thought it might sound echo-y in a room like that.
The audio sounds great unedited, but I did do some EQ work to make them sound their best. Shotgun mics that are longer tend to reject any echo better so the NTG2 barely picked up the echo at all.
Great video! Im a solo shooter as well and often set up, record and pack down interviews solo so good job. question. . . Why did you seat the talent in the first video on the left in front of the truck rather than on the right in the empty space? just thought it could've been framed to show the truck a little more. I mean it looks great dont get me wrong but just a thought I had when I first saw the framing.
Edited video will include text that will appear in the right side of frame. We (business owner and myself) left it empty intentionally for that reason.

Loved how simple this set up was. It's always cool to see people go simple rather than crazy to show that you can get away with simple.
Curious about the framing and maybe this is inexperience showing but why so far to the left? Just seems like a lot of unnecessary dead space on the right of the screen. I could see more on the third line, but again, could just not understand
I definitely should’ve explained that first interview. A few others pointed that out. Basically, that interview is going to have a lot of animated text to frame right so client and I kept it very blank intentionally.

Didn’t you switch off the ceiling light in the office hall? Were the temperature more towards 5600 kelvin?
I found a dimmer switch on the wall and turned them down. My lights were close to 5600.

I have a day rate that includes myself and any of the equipment I own basically. It’s currently 1750 and that is separate from any editing.

Personally no. FF can be nice, however, internal ND filters are too valuable to exchange for that.
at 7:00 minutes is that the audio from the lav or the ntg2? and which budget timecode do you recommend? thanks in advance i enjoy your videos.
All interviews you hear are from the NTG2 with a little bit of post work to make them sound their best. For timecode I strongly recommend Deity TC-1

how do you mix the lav and the boom? Do you use the boom as main mic and the lav as backup? Or do you mix them somehow? Thank you very much,
Boom is my main audio and lav is backup. All the sample audio you heard from the interviews was from the boom. My voiceover was from the same lav though for comparison.
as a DOP my only issue is how you've positioned the first interviewee too much empty space on the right side, i get that if you had filmed him facing the other way you would have had all 4 interviews facing the same direction but if they are in different locations it doesn't really matter as much, other than that brilliant video and its always great to see BMDPCC6k Pros getting the love they deserve keep up the good work.

Which audio source did you decide to go with and what are you using for lav?
You're listening to the Boom on all 4 interviews with very minor EQ work to make everyone sound their best. For the lav I had a W.Lav going into a Deity BP-TRX

Question: I see two cameras. I also see the two different shots in each interview. Did you record both angles and edited (pieced) them together or are you using a kind of switcher during recording? If so, what? Thxs.
Just recording individually and switch during the editing process.
Do you record both shots completely? Like have both cameras recording the entire interview at the same time.

I use ND filters in my interviews all the time. Usually it’s when dealing with sunlight either indoors with big windows or when shooting outside.

As a "one-man band" op...how do you handle lav mics for female talent on corporate shoots?
It’s about 95% the same as I handle male clients. The only real difference is I ask to hold their finger and use it to point exactly where I want lav mics placed. 9/10 times they tell me just to mic them up and 1/10 I can tell would rather do it themselves. I’m really good at judging client comfort levels and understanding where boundaries are. It’s all about communicating to both male and female clients what you are trying to do and what your next steps are.
