From what the Shifters of Southern California created, to this. Things have definitely changed. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a Rat Rod was a traditional Hot Rod that lacked certain elements such as paint and/or upholstery. Those Shifters cars had neat vintage Olds,Caddy,Pontiac, & Flathead engines. Even the owners were a throw back to the 50s with their Ducktail hair , white t-shirts, and rolled denims. Somewhere along the line however, things changed. Rat Rods went from period correct nostalgic time machines, to these Mad Max Warrior nonsensical cars that are purposely built to be rusty, and have several different era's thrown together. People like Welder Up perpetuate this movement. Thank God for magazines like Rodders Journal.

Just because they're rusty, doesn't really mean anything. Still have all the legal requirements on most of them. Plus requirements for old vehicles were different. If it didn't have the equipment from the factory, they can't make you add something that wasn't there in 1930 or whenever

I totally agree. I hit the mute button right away. A big part of hotrods is the sound. If a person wants to listen to music go watch a music video. Not only that, if you have to play music , wouldn't you pick the Beach Boys ?? The sound of each hot rod just enhanses the feel of hotrodding.

I wonder how many viewers (including the person that posted this video) know the history / origin of Rat Rods. Do any of you have a clue who coined the phrase, who were the first people to start the resurgence in nostalgic hot rodding, when, and where it all started? Its a shame, because if any of you were passionate about this, your cars might look different. Todays cars are a mockery of the original Rat Rods from the late 1980s / early 1990s. Cars (like what are shown in this video ) are cartoonish rusty piles of junk with modern boring small black Chevy engines in them.
Oh is that so? I happen to be one of the most published rat rod writers in the game. I wrote for Rat Rod magazine and other rat rod based sources for years. Where is your "rat rod"? There is a difference between hot rodding and rat rodding.
Also, very few of these have "boring small block chevy engines" in them. Many of them are cummins, big blocks and other wonky motors. Too bad you don't know what you're looking at.

You yanks build some "kickarse" cars but you've got a lot to learn about burnouts. The one at 4:00 wouldn't even make it past the first round here in Australia and the other two wouldn't get to the semis. Look up " Summernats, Canberra, Burnout comp" for some examples.
