- Gloria Frances Stuart was an American film and stage actress, visual artist, and activist. Stuart made a prominent return to cinema when she was cast as the 101-year-old elder Rose Dawson Calvert in James Cameron's Titanic (1997). Stuart's performance earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

They had to actually age her to play old Rose in Titanic. If u see her at the 1998 Oscars that's how she looked at that moment. She was quite lovely & so was the dress she had chosen to wear but of course she didn't win. I thought her performance in Titanic was wonderful especially at the end when she utters "there were 20 lifeboats floating nearby & only one came back, one". She sounded so convincing like she was really there. What a lovely actress she was.

She is the one and only person who was in the movie that was alive when the Titanic sank. Everyone else who starred or worked on the movie were not even born yet.
An absolutely iconic performance - one for the ages. What pissed me off is how her passing barely got noticed, including fact that she actually lived to be as old as her fictional character... James Cameron, Kate and Leo should have given her a special party or something. How SHORT the attention span of Hollywood.

There's an excellent movie starring Peter O'Toole entitled "My Favorite Year" that I heartily recommend. Gloria Stuart is featured in the Stork Club scene, when her 'husband" asks O'Toole's character to greet her as an anniversary "gift". O'Toole's character goes one better. He dances with her and the dance floor stands aside to give them pride of place. Gloria Stuart (born in 1910 on July 4) was 72 when "My Favorite Year" was released and 87 when Cameron's "Titanic" was released. She died in September of 2010, aged 100 .

I always think it must have been amazing to be born that time. Back then, many people didn’t have electricity yet, car invented but not really on the road (not til 1918), most people hadn’t been in an airplane, TVs and other social media wasn’t even thought of.
