If you had a car and it ran and you could afford to put fuel in it then it could be the worst car ever made and you were still cool. Or at least the cool kids gave you a pass because they might need a lift from you some time.

    As long as I can find one, I will own one. I've used my eggs as work vehicles & long distance travel vehicles between Michigan, Massachusetts & Tennessee for over 15 years now. My present one has well over a quarter of a million miles on it & purrs like a kitten. No major repairs since new. Maintinance is easy & less complicated than most any other vehicle. No timing belt to deal with & it's the only vehicle I've ever seen with 5.8 quarts of oil in the crank & a 2.5 quart supplimental oil reservoir as well. My previous Previa had over half a million miles on it & I sold it to buy my current one. The guy I sold it to drives it every day. It now has nearly 600,000 miles on it. They are simply the most reliable, functional vehicles I've ever owned. I've never been broken down or had to call AAA with any of my Previa's. I can't say that for my wife's Volkswagen. Viva Toyota!!

    I owned a loaded out 1992. Had all the options including the front refrigerator compartment, and a enormous rear sunroof that retracted, along with one that was over the drivers head that only flipped up. The trick was always having to explain how to change the oil from under the drivers seat. It was a great van, btw. I wish I hadn’t sold it. It could fit so much in the back. Drywall, 2x4s, you name it. Call it whatever you’d like but from my point of view, it couldn’t be beat. I only used 89 octane fuel and never had a problem, BTW. My only complaint was that the front cup holder below the radio never completely retracted (a problem that was shared by all of them).

      The Previa has an extra 1000lb on the Honda Fit, so the performance will be, well, not particularly good. Not too much of a detriment if you don't drive like a madman, but it does mean that you will sometimes find yourself lacking power to get out of your own way.

    • @robertmcgovern8850
      @robertmcgovern8850 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yet it still hauls a ton of stuff (literally) and a towing capacity is 3500lbs. And I have towed that much, from Denver to Laramie (over 2000ft elevation gain).
      I've spent $2500 in repairs on my '91 over 17 years ownership, and it has never broken down. I am the second owner and we both beat the crap out of it (work van). It has 319k and will serve me up another 150k, if I don't get sick of it first and sell it to a vanlife doper in Boulder. 😆
      It is boring. It takes 4 minutes to reach interstate speeds. The steering is vague and the cabin noise severe. It has good traction but lousy clearance. On a sunny day, all that glass turns it into an Air Fryer. The AC used R12, so you can't recharge it. The flex coupling behind those lovely headers breaks every 7 years. Rear main seals drip on all of them.
      But it is cheap to own, utterly reliable, fits a stunning amount of cargo, and you can put 12 sheets of 3/4" plywood in the back, between the wheel wells, and 12' sticks of lumber up against the windshield *and the back hatch will close.*

Yes it was underpowered but actually drove very nice, almost car like. Handed that van down to all 4 of my kids and they actually loved it. My last daughter took it to college for four years and was thrilled with it during the winter when everyone else got stuck and she just passed them by. Engines and transmissions were rock solid but other parts not so much. got too expensive to maintain otherwise would have hung on to that van.

But if you really had to try, the current going rate is about $4k for a clapped out one or $7k for one that's in decent condition. Honestly, if all you want is to drive you and six other people around while reliving some great times, I don't think that's a bad price to pay.

    I’m happy to see many appreciate this van. It’s that 90’s nostalgia of weird and creativeness that we don’t see anymore. Why slap an under-powered engine right smack in the middle of not a car, but a heavy chassised Van? Because F@$k it, we’re gonna find out what happens. The headlights are low, and profiled to see every crack on that desperately under-maintained road. The windshield, wide and welcoming, to experience the open road and all the joys that come with it. The seats can ROTATE. Because when you haul friends and family, the driving experience is half the fun, until you can turn right around, and face to face every other passenger in the vehicle. The windows are huge to accommodate every wanderlust daydream the passengers have. The Toyota Previa is the pinnacle of Van engineering. Not because it was engineered to be mechanically superior, but because it was engineered to and for the human soul. And it’s undying and desperate need, to be forever Free.

    We had a '91 LE AWD in dark blue. Had it for 300,000 miles and it may be still out there. The mid engine was never a problem as it never failed. ZERO trouble. Fold up seats were great. Take out the middle row and you could put a full sheet of plywood in there. We towed a 2500 pound fully loaded popup camper from Northeast Ohio to Virginia Beach for summer vacatons with five people in the car. Easily did highway speeds bogging down at times on steep inclines.(no supercharger). It handled well in snow. The long moon roof was great on hot summer days. Open it up and whoosh all the hot air instantly evacuated out of the car. It was a great car for our family. Well done Toyota.

    I had one between 2008 and 2011... bought it with 273000 miles on it and drove it until 342000 .... replaced normal wear items (Brakes, Shocks/Struts,Tires) .... It wasn't that quick (slow acceleration), but it was fast (set the cruise at 105 if you want).... it did do one thing that other minivans couldn't do... it could haul 11' long lumber (or other long narrow things) between the seats all the way up under the dash. The A/C had a leak that I never fixed and it needed its valves adjusted in order to pass emissions , so I finally got rid of it... later contacted the buyer to find out that the thing was still running at 408000 miles .... the oil reservoir under the hood was unique in that it only used that oil if the engine was low, kinda like a coolant reservoir works on most cars ... I think that plays into why these ButterBean vans run forever. Oh yeah, it was very balanced with the engine so far behind the front wheels, the weight was almost perfectly balanced front to rear. ... and another thing, the visibility... you could see 200 degrees around the driver with out much blocking your view. One of the reasons it was canceled in the US was the crash test ratings... that prime visibility came at a cost of passenger compartment collapse in frontal accidents due to those thin A pillars.

  • @kevinbarry71
    @kevinbarry71 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This was an Asian market vehicle brought to the US. Most of those didn't do that well. That's why later on it was replaced with the sienna. Which we still have today. Four-wheel-drive supercharge versions of the vehicle you have were very popular up in Colorado where they have high altitude and snow. Remember the original Honda Odyssey? Basically a station wagon version of the accord. That vehicle and your Toyota were placeholders until a dedicated version for North America could be developed.

    I see quite a lot around in my area. They come in 2 ways: totally clapped out and blowing smoke with a shit ton of rust and dents driven by poor briars or they are immaculate and driven by old people.

    This minivan was my family vehicle growing up. It taught me how to drive when I was sixteen. Had many fond memories with it.

    I LOVE the PREVIA!! I had 6 stick shift Previas that I had to travel to multiple states to acquire....I have2 left and I would NEVER EVER let them go!!! You can EASILY fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the van with ease. Best camp and work vehicles in my life!!! I do burn outs, I can't believe how reliable this van is. It's FKKN AMAZING...

    My parents bought a used 96 Tarago back in 98. They still have it 22 years later. In that time all it needed apart from normal things was a replacement rear muffler, cat and a starter motor, also the paint is shot and the AC likes to make a racket. I honestly love that big old egg. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not and it just keeps on going.

    This is my daily driver too, I'm on my 2nd one now and these things are outrageously reliable (at 217k now) last one at 318k when it was hit by a truck. I just did the valve cover gaskets and that was fuuuun...it is painfully slow tho

      check your rear differential for leaks, might let you run it a bit longer ;)

    You know how we say that wheels and coilovers can change the look of a car substantially? This Previa is proof of that. Sure nothing will change it looks like an egg, but closer to the ground and with those rims, it looks far nicer than without.

    I love it! Everything about this video I love! ignore the fact that I'm drunk at 4 in the morning, it was a good video! Hilarious, informative, and insightful. SURE Grammarly is helping correct all of my spelling errors and grammatical double entendre but its still great. All the videos that this channel produces are spectacular and philosophically inspiring.

    My mom had a Toyota *VAN* in the 90s, had the biggest metal sunroof I have ever seen, when it was full open, half the roof was gone. The middle seats could spin 360° and were more comfortable than the front seats.
    Damn, I miss that thing.

    One of the most reliable cars ever, weird engine position for sure, I learned how to drive in this car and it was amazing, good visibility and ran smooth. Only problem was that passengers would complain about the loud engine. Got called an egg a lot too lol.

    I think the Previa is the culmination of all the personality about late 80's to late 90's cars I love so much. Never again will we have cars like these.
