    The reason your blade is hitting is because the chassis is not strong enough for the torque and vibration of that engine, too much flex where the engine is mounted especially after you cut a good portion of the center away. It might be a good idea to add your "template" between the engine and chassis and fasten it with 3 bolts along each edge of the template to stiffen it.

    • @Fixologist1
      @Fixologist1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If that were the case, it wouldn't be rubbing when turned by hand.

    • @gregerickson6924
      @gregerickson6924 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Fixologist1 The reason it was rubbing before you ground off the ends of the blade was the engine was not 100% centered, after you ground off the ends for clearance and started mowing I could hear the blade hitting the chassis but the strikes were inconsistent so something is loose and/or moving around.
      That center piece you cut out had a stamped stiffening edge to give the mounting area rigidity, now it has been removed, the engine mounting area is just a piece of light gauge flat sheet metal with no support.

    • @Fixologist1
      @Fixologist1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@gregerickson6924 You're right about the mounting being a hair off center, I'm sure. And you're right about the bend center of the chassis adding rigidity. But nothing is moving as far as the blade or engine. It's the mower deck twisting when you push and pull on the handlebars. Causes the deck to change shape minutely.

    Interesting project! I wonder if you could bot the template to the underside to stiffen up the chassis if it's flexing? Reminds me of the mowers we used in the '70's--just a motor on a deck w/wheels. No safety stuff like they have on modern mowers. It works good though, and can be a good backup machine.

    My yard is too large for a toy mower. I have a large corner lot, and I would require at least three batteries to finish it, maybe four. I'll stick to my 21" Toro recycler. I purchased this mower in 1989 and still starts on one pull.

      I found a Craftsman lawnmower that was at least from 1989, as the PCV vented to atmosphere, but someone had definitely changed the carb along the way.
      Unfortunately they had finally given up as I found it tossed to the curb with the bowl off the carb, and looking worse for wear..
      But deck is still solid, I replaced the carb, and here it is 35 years later, still cutting grass...
      Amazing what care will do, even with an old Tecumish

    Well, I have seen people take the decks of electric mowers and put engines on them as well. Unfortunately, the machine you have, depending on your laws and bylaws you may not be able to sell due to the engine running a bit faster than the 3200 RPM (this isn't hard to fix, probably bending a piece of metal on the governor spring) and the lack of an operator presence system (you may be able to retrofit one on this engine) but nice conversion all around.

    I'm at your "deterred" stage. I'm guessing there's a reason you didn't just use your dirty fingers to impress a tracing of the washer plate but now, since you have cut the other plate off, wouldn't it be best to cut the plate properly and weld it in place on the mower. You could really work on the durability at this point, building in some rigidity and avoiding any future plate flex. Hindsight really helps with making a mower that really would mow through the ages. Perhaps your daydreams of a better society would be absorbed through the mower by spiritual osmosis and developed by your grandchildren who will inherit Grandpa Brad's old bluey mower resulting in one of them realising a way that human civilisation that can prosper outside the system of economic growth. Your mower would become the symbol for our new world like the hammer and cycle was to a previous yet flawed attempt.

    also with the pressure washer you can fix the crack if you weld it.

    LOL, the batteries can be fixed for a lot less work than what you went through. I guess you didn't get a battery with the mower and in that case $120 for what did you say? 4yrs? I bet by the time you have a gas can, buy gas, pay for the gas to go get the gas and then just figure all your time a new battery ould be cheap.
    Now, if the fact is you just wanted to see if you could do it that is a different matter. I never stop laughing at just how hard people work to try to make a point of how much they love sending their hard earned money to the Middle East. The tech is here now, you just need to want to search it out. I bought a cordless weed eater 5yrs ago and I have not looked back. my weed eating is little duty and I was having to deal with premix and having to buy a new Feather Weight weed eater every 2-3 years because they just don't hold up. I bought a $99 Cordless 20v B&D at Lowes 5 yerars ago and the nice part is every time I pull the trigger it just runs.
    Good luck in the future on your lawn mower.
