Competition Focused Heeling part 2 - Dog Training Video

  • Competition heeling is very different than your average "walk on a leash." In this video, which is part 2, I show what the finished result should be and also work on some finishing touches.
Focused heeling is required in AKC obedience as well as IPO and ring sports. Getting a good focused heel is something trainers work on forever. Its always a work in progress and is the most important part of most any obedience routine.
Be sure to watch part 1 with our puppy Duane to see the foundational parts of the focused heel training.

Thabk you for showing proper corrections. Its really not helpful watching other trainers show perfectly curated & trimmed videos where the dog is doing everything perfectly & saying "if he were to do this...ect" & not actually showing This was very educational thank you!

I’m returning to obedience training and competing and it wasn’t going well. Yesterday I watched a lot of your videos this morning my training was so much better and Ollie responded great. I stuck to command, corrections if needed, yes and treat. I was talking way too much confusing my dog. I’ve changed my posture, stayed more calm and added a lot more fun into my training this morning. Great results already. I would just like to thank you for talking the time to do these videos with so much information and positivity. Thank you.

I would love for you to do a few videos on scent and detection... I was playing hide and seek with my 9 mo Mal last night and she found me EVERY time. It was hilarious and awesome at the same time. Hearing her gallop all over the house and hearing her panting and then her wagging her tail and loving on me was so rewarding...

Thanks for tip about the tug line. It's so much easier to get the timing right to reward consistent looking if you can correct the turn away. My dog gets distracted by EVERYTHING. No treat or toy has high enough value outdoors. She comes right back to obedience, but it would still be points off competitively.

Exceptional video of superb training methods. You are a really GREAT benefit to all dog handlers Robert. Thank you for all your videos. I'm working with our 8 month old pure bred German Shepherd boy dog from phenomenal stock, who LOVES learning anything new and is exceptional adept at his understanding and retention. I've worked with countless working stock dogs over the years, but never GSD's. Quite impressive breed.
Thanks again for your very helpful training techniques. Sure appreciate your efforts.

Ugh, we just got done with our 15 minute traveling training session. We HAVE to get them exercised BEFORE training. Ugh. These boys are powerful and we have bunnies and cats and ravens swooping down smells of cougar and raccoon and and and. I have to 'get' big in voice, deep guttural NO. Immediately changing my voice to calm, soft and the normal I love my baby boys voice. The second they leave what they are doing I growl. Robert, does this make sense? I use the growl for correction, and sure with as light a correction that is still sane with a massive 100# gorgeous monster...

Fantastic video robert. I have a question about the tuck sit you dod a video on with dwayne-o-mator please. What size platform would you recommend to teach a german shepherd this method on please? I dont have one similar to what you have so i will be making one. Only thing is i dont know how big to make it, i dont want to make it too wide and she sit too comfortably on it. But i also dont want to make it too small that she cant grasp the concept because she is falling off haha

Hi Robert, could you please make a video about NePoPo? I'd love to hear what you think about the training technique. I saw some videos, read a few articles and I don't really like what I saw. On one hand, they're claiming it to be the TOP training technque and on the other hand they need to have electric collar on the neck, on the thies, two sticks and shock the dog on every turn to teach a dog to heel :D It makes me confused. How is NePoPo supposed to be better than what I see on this video? Should it be stronger than other styles of training? What about the mentality that the dog thinks he changes the environment by his own behavior? Shouldn't the dog think the owner is always the one who gives orders?

edit: i don't want my dog to have to do this all the time for competitions but it's a good skill to have incase i need her to walk past busy places. she doesn't particularly like being right up close to me and prefers being against walls. i sort of know what i need to do but it's hard to reinforce it without bending down.

IPO has become weird. This heeling is a FAIL for UD in AKC [crowding, looking up not ahead] as is the non go behind to heel position and it's not a sustainable heel for a true Military Dog (you will never find a sentry dog looking up). This really is a bizarre change that has happened over time don't you think Robert?

Training in french or german is common for dogs competing in french or german protection sports. As a side note, it also helps if you have ruined the english commands by saying them but not enforcing them in the past.

Folks, careful of the placement of your toy. If we have the toy on our right hand side, for some dogs, it will encourage him to be arching around the front of you while heeling in anticipation of the toy being delivered from the right side. Just a tip.

I want a dog like this so badly. However, I am completely terrified of German Shepherds and pretty much all dogs due to getting attacked 3 times through my life. The last was 3 years ago. Watching dog videos on how to act when your getting attacked helped.
I was able to find the perfect dog for the moment. I adopted him through SPCALA. He’s a 9yo toy terrier. Such a mellow dog. When I have an encounter with dog who goes after him, I grab him up off and into my arms. I can’t let him get hurt. I really need help getting over this terror of dogs. My fears are unfortunately based in factual realistic events. Dogs are dogs, they have teeth and they use them.

Ive been bitten two times by a GSD. I used to fear them like hell. Then I saw the cuteness of a puppy GSD that I noticed at a nearby house. Played with him a bit and decided I want one just to prove to myself they can be good bois when treated well. :)
