I remember hearing this album when I was like 10/11 years old 😂 this was pretty much my introduction into hip-hop/rap. This album still sounds as amazing as it did back then as does the OG chronic album which is why Dre is the GOAT imo.
My audio engineering instructor, Mr Peter Novak, mixed the songs F*ck You and Xplosive for this album. He told me Dre had the most amazing work ethic and vision about exactly what impact he wanted this album to have. He said working on this was like being on a movie set. He taught me a lot that Dre taught him and i still keep this album in mind when mixing and my ish sounds too big for some rappers. 😂 Oh idk if it was mentioned but the rumor at the time was that Kurupt's verse was about Master P who was messing with Foxy Brown when she was engaged to Kurupt. 😅🤷🏾♂️
For years after this dropped you'd hear it everywhere you went. Every car had this bumping out and every house you went to either had this playing or the up in smoke tour on the TV. Straight Classic!
Dr. Dre version came first, Erykah Badu used it afterwards. The album was so hot I heard a lot of of the instrumentals everywhere after it came out. Even Jay Z redid the watcher.
Jay z aint redo the watcher. Dr Dre redid it for Jay's album and featured Rakim, who was on Aftermath at the time. It's not like the Blu Cantrell record where her producer Ivan Orthodox basically lifted the instructions to What's the difference.
I still rock this album till this day. Like you said, the way he lets his artist breathe on his album is awesome. Track 16 was amazing! I was living in LA when this album came out. It was a crazy summer!
I love the fact that Eminem wrote the first track, The Watcher, on Dr Dre's masterpiece. He was such a large part of his life at the time and he entrusted that track to Eminem to kick things off. You can tell it's written by Em, in terms of style and cadence, yet Dre spits it well as he always does when others write for him (very often). Always loved that intro to the album. Takes me back to when I picked the album up on release! Classic.
met hittman after a show, everybody chasing snoop and other stars. hit just walking casual away from the crowd. I recognized him and told him his flow is Top shelf. he was super cool.
So, what happened with Hitman and Aftermath back in the day? I know we were waiting for his album to come out.. Did eminem happen and hitman was like f this?
@Kaido_928 I remember watching an interview, him explaining. but I forget his explanation. I think Em exploding had something to do with Hit getting shelfed
He was supposed to be the next big thing that Dr Dre was going to push, but it never happened and he left the label without releasing an album. It's an odd one, but there has to be more to it. Only they know.
Hittman was gonna blow up but I feel like Dre wanted to focus on Eminem. Dre wanted to get away from the gangsta rap vibe for a while. Eminem was a change of pace for Dre. The gangsta vibe of course came when 50 dropped. 50 brought a different vibe. Dre didn't want the same old shit he already did before.
Great reaction! Another classic album. If you want to review another Westcoast Death Row era classic, review “Dogg Pound - Dogg Food”. Dropped in 1995, Produced by Daz, Dr Dre and DJ Pooh. Kurupt was in his prime and absolutely SNAPPED! Peace..
Great Reaction to this Classic bro !!! This the only Dre Album Scott Storch played instruments on after 13 years of Dre producing on his own since 86. 💯
Damn… this album is on a league on its own for me. I was 15 when this came out and was familiar with higher class rap albums like wu-tang forever, infamous, doggystyle etc. But the production on this album felt so tight and clean, it just hits different. love your reviews! Love from Amsterdam
After this, it's only right you check out The Compton album that came out 2015 around the same time the NWA movie was released. That album is criminally underrated. Dre's musical progression on that Compton album, the mixing, the features - Kendrick, Anderson Paak(the star of the album). Yeah man, please check out Compton.
When I first bought this album in 99 when I like 11-12 or something. I bumped this album to death. This was on constant spin for over a year+. Great memories. Especially 2000 summer.
Shoutout to Houston legend Devin the Dude who does the hook and a part on "Fuck You". He's one of the GOATs in my book, and has been knocking out classics with his super unique and smooth style since the early 90s. Still kicking too. Can't recommend him enough, especially if you (but even if you don't) smoke weed.

Glad you did this. Hope you go do more Eminem. The two albums I want you to react to are D12’s Devil’s Night and Eminem’s Relapse. Be warned, they are not for the faint of heart. In fact, I’ll even note a song on Relapse called. Eminem made it as a song that ‘you would feel physically sick to.’ Sometimes, I do feel mentally disturbed when I listen to it.

Cube has said openly he loved the hood, but that's not where he wants to raise his family. Nothing wrong with moving to a better neighborhood, he just called NWA out at the time for not owning it
Second classic album from Dre! This album is one of the best to drop in the late 90s hands down! The production was crazy and the guest verses were incredible.
On "What's the Difference" Dr Dre was talking about MC Ren from NWA. They made up soon after the songs reported so that makes it kind of ironic because MC Ren is on the album
You missed it he's talking to The DOC that's why he mentions the window of the car and later on Eminem says you better show some respect whenever the DOC is brought
I’m from Scotland, but in 2000 ish we went on family holiday to New York. 15 year old bought this album and proceeded to blast it from the limo window entire time. Parents not happy
Timeless album from front to back and awesome reaction. Also fun fact on the song light speed hit man's retreat like Megatron part was sampled on a heltah skeltah song called never ending but it was at the very end of the track. Hope you can review it sometime
Chronic 2001!! Little trivia. The Original title of the album was supposed to be Chronic 2000: No Seeds but Suge Knight who owned royalties on Dre's music since he left Death Row came out with a compilation album called Chronic 2000: Still Smokin' before Dre could drop his. So Dre had to put a weed leaf symbol 2001 as the title. Thats why on Lightspeed you hear it say "you are now listening to the sounds of Chronic 2000" and then dude comes on going "One!!" because it wasnt originally 2001 it was Chronic 2000. Even Eminem says in Forgot About Dre "from here on out its The Chronic 2" so its supposed to have Chronic in the title. Because of that I always consider the title Chronic 2001 when talking about it.
My lil circle of friends rocked this shit back in 2001, white kids from England rolling to this album, we used to talk about it at school it sold big over here, xzibit is underrated af, good times think I was like 11 back when the world made sence and wasn't full of pussies 😂
Nobody ever cared about dre using writers because he always credited his writers. He never acted like he was writing anything he didn't write or like he was on some emcee sht.
Love this album, u should watch the 'Up In Smoke' tour to see the experience of the fans around this time. I was like 13 when this album dropped, good times.
Mel Man was the co-producer of the album. Not Scott Storch. The sound of this album (drums, bass lines) can be attributed to Mel more than Scott. He played keys on tracks - primarily Still Dre but wasn’t the PRODUCER. It grates me that people try to give Scott Storch credit like this 😅
@@seanyoung9014 I was there at the time and have pretty much encyclopaedic knowledge about this stuff - LINER NOTES haha - so arguing with the younger ones is pointless. They don't want to hear it. And they run the conversations cause they run the internet.

Please put the "all we got iz us" album by onyx on your list. Everyone please like this comment if you agree about how much if a masterpiece that album is... 2ndly, if you wanna hear godly bars that shaped big pun and em, listen to 1 of these 2 Kool G Rap albums... "Roots of Evil" or "Live and Let die." You will NOT be disappointed and you will see why he is better than Em, Jay and Pun. The lyrics, wordplay and pockets of flows are unmatchable. You will start swearing by him as I do as number 1 on the top 5 list.
😂😂😂@ Your GRANDMAMA heard Still DRE and @56:45 ☠️☠️☠️ Thank you for this review. Took me back to jr high when this came out in 99. Fun fact Dre had to rename it 2001 because death row heard about the album and dropped chronic 2000 a little before. Instant Classic when it came out .... any STYLES P album, any CZARFACE album, or any MADLIB album mind blowing as well. Check out Freddy Gibbs Pinata. It was best album of the year ...
Let Me Ride with the Parliament Funkadelic sample from Swing Down Sweet Chariot are so great. There are so many Parliament Funkadelic samples on both Doggystyle and The Chronic.
The cleanest production to this day! The Chronic back in 92 was the classic then the return 2001 just took it to the next level. The master of masterpieces of an album, if pac had lived he would of loved flowing over a DRE beat
Aa far as Bag Lady, they pretry much came out around the same time. I always assumed Dre sold to her for her use. There was never any suggestion that anything shady was going on as far as I knew.

Dr. Dre & Eminem is the best duo. Back then most generations today are Eminem's Stan. Eminem is the most lyrically rapper ever. I got nothing but respect to Eminem.
If I can relieve any moment. It’s definitely when and where I heard this album for the 1st time. Me the homies and my then girlfriend was in High School playing 007 on the 64. Snowed in with junk food, blunts and liq 😂. We played this album multiple times that night.
Nice review. FYI Jay has a Watcher pt 2 ft Dre and Truth Hurts (who by the way has one of the least heard, but soulful albums). I really like this album but some of the songs on the back half are a little too west coast for me. Just personal preference.

Dr Dre produced XXplosive and Bag Lady by Erykah Badu. It was a sample from Soul Mann and The Brothers from the '71 Shaft soundtrack
I was in the 4th grade when this came out and I still jam out to this album like it’s brand new
24:00 -Dre is talking about Suge...to answer your question 👌 great review playboy
Great reaction man, one of my favourite albums of all time, Dr Dre’s production over all these amazing rappers, classic
Sonically this is the bar 🔥🔥🔥 It was a movie for your ears. Even the transitions on this is elite 💯 especially from F You to Still D.R.E, sheesshhh
Nate on Xxplosive was sick
My lil circle of friends rocked this shit back in 2001, white kids from England rolling to this album, we used to talk about it at school it sold big over here, xzibit is underrated af, good times think I was like 11 back when the world made sence and wasn't full of pussies 😂
Nobody ever cared about dre using writers because he always credited his writers. He never acted like he was writing anything he didn't write or like he was on some emcee sht.
Love this album, u should watch the 'Up In Smoke' tour to see the experience of the fans around this time. I was like 13 when this album dropped, good times.
Devin the Dude has hella albums....always solid and always funny.
Mel Man was the co-producer of the album. Not Scott Storch. The sound of this album (drums, bass lines) can be attributed to Mel more than Scott. He played keys on tracks - primarily Still Dre but wasn’t the PRODUCER.
It grates me that people try to give Scott Storch credit like this 😅
Bruh me too. I've given up trying to correct people on it at this point lol.
@@seanyoung9014 I was there at the time and have pretty much encyclopaedic knowledge about this stuff - LINER NOTES haha - so arguing with the younger ones is pointless. They don't want to hear it. And they run the conversations cause they run the internet.
@@silentnavarino Lol they don't know what those are and when I tell them, they look at me like "I gotta read something?!" smh 😅
Watch the up in smoke tour. You might be able to find it on TH-cam. Best concert ive ever been to
That beat on Xxplosive is ✨C R I S P Y✨
I remember i hear it first in my friend car with some homies back in 2000, and we are on the way to brothel that night 😂. The rest is history.. my favourite hip hop album of all time above the rest
Also the 'Shut em Down' album
On the song F*** You, that's not Nate Dogg. That's Devin the Dude from Face Mob
😂😂😂@ Your GRANDMAMA heard Still DRE and @56:45 ☠️☠️☠️
Thank you for this review.
This album is fire men, its the greatest comeback album of all time
Let Me Ride with the Parliament Funkadelic sample from Swing Down Sweet Chariot are so great.
This vid was a straight vibe session and a flashback to my childhood even tho I was like 2 goin on 3 when this came out 🤣🤣🤣 But I definitely remember a gang of these songs bein all over the radio back then. Thank you for this bro 🔥🔥🔥
Royce Da 5'9" wrote the last track, The Message
it's crazy how Dre made such a great album that sounds completely diff from the Chronic...don't nobody care about Dre not writing lol he's a producer that can rap..he gets a pass lol..still mad Snoop wasn't on the Xxplosive song lol...if you did it and I missed my bad but time to get back to some DMX and do that 2nd album Flesh of my flesh...
the song message Rapper Eve used that sample for her song let me blow yo mind with gwen stefani
2001 is a masterpiece.
you are a masterpiece 😍👌
Yes Sir!! That reaction is what I’m talking about. 🔥🔥🔥Hyped. The way I felt when I first heard this back in the day.
I keep this album on rotation to this day along with the "A Day In The Life" Soundtrack album by Sticky Fingaz
Devin is from Houston but he’s popular out west
Have you reviewed the Watcher part 2? Jay,Dre and Rakim. That and "Meet the Parents" was the reason I got Blueprint 2. Please review those two songs if you haven't
Thanks a billion, King Ahmad. From beginning til' the end I am watching your analyzing and reaction over the DR DRE 2001 album.
It was an incredible album. Dr Dre is a legend, and we NEED A DOCTOR ANY TIME, WE WON'T FORGET ABOUT DRE❤
It’s hard to explain how massive this album was at the time. Every single person was blasting it 24/7
Dr. Dre & Eminem is the best duo. Back then most generations today are Eminem's Stan. Eminem is the most lyrically rapper ever. I got nothing but respect to Eminem.
This album is the standard for production
Erykah Badu used the beat from Explosive for her song Bag Lady...
Finally!!!!! I suggested this since the 1st Chronic review
On the "What's the difference" Dre's verse, I think he is talking about DJ Yella(from NWA) who was always talking about a reunion at that time...
That song got Rakim on it too
@@ArtisanWindchimesyeah couldn't remember if it was that or another remix. I always think of that version before I think of Dre's original version.
Bro I'm crying laughing at how passionate you were about skipping that pause for porno skit. 😅😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅
Thank you for giving Hitman his flowers
There Was 3 Major Radio Hits 1. Still D.R.E That Was Certified Quintuple Platinum In 2000 And Won A Grammy In 2000. 2. Forget About Dre That Was Certified Triple Platinum In 2000. 3. The Next Episode That Was Certified Platinum In 2000.
