I'm Puerto Rican. I currently live here. My parents still don't have a job. I missed a lot of days in school. And when we got back to school, I would leave at 12pm because we didn't have some teachers. It was like that until the last day of school. Every Puerto Rican had thoughts like this. Delovely 1 the US is definitely not broke. Do you see how much is spent on NASA research?? I know that the Australian government just gave the US $180 million towards research when Australia is struggling. Why is trump building a wall if he’s so broke?
The difficulty of working at a job like this is that to do your job effectively, you have to really sympathize with the caller or you come off as disingenuous. However, you can't get too involved because it'll wear you down as well.
I know I talked to one of them and they weren't sympathetic and it really just made me want to end it more you really have to be empathetic have empathy that's what I meant she just said things like oh I'm sorry for you or that's bad that sucks like okay everyone else tells me that why can't you just tell me it's going to be okay that it's okay to make mistakes like Damm say that'll get better even if it's a lie
r0sy_ m00n_ Everyone says stuff like, “I’m sorry”, “that’s bad”, but nobody tells me that it’s going to be okay and that makes me feel like no one cares
I read somewhere these powerful lines “I want to die, but please don’t let me die”. This must be the reason for their calls. Stay strong, you. Life is hard and miserable, but its rare and beautiful that we’re alive. ❤️
I remember I once dealt with a friend who was considering suicide. We had a deep conversation. All those heart attacks every time they said they wanted to die, the scrambling to try to find the correct words so they didn’t bury themselves more into their hole and trying to make them smile. Having that as a daily job, I could never.
I really want to do this job when I'm older. I had a friend before he passed who would always look to me as a person to talk to with his depression. He would tell me I was an amazing listener and every time he talked to me his troubles would melt away and said my voice was very soothing. I hope he's looking at me and supporting me in heaven. I don't know how to get this job all I know is I was put on this earth to do it.
It’s so upsetting seeing people who don’t have anyway of getting help, and it’s everywhere. We need to take care of each other and help one another instead of separating ourselves from issues just because they aren’t directly affecting us.
I live in Puerto Rico and I can still remember how hard it was to cope with the pain of losing someone you care about because of the hurricane it was really difficult for me I lost my house I lost everything, I was always thinking of suicide and how I could be free from the pain and guilt. I just hope that none of you have to go thru the same pain.❤
Stop seeing life on these terms. Note: There are also Euro-Puerto Ricans. Actually, even the darkest Puerto Ricans hold some sort of European ancestry.
These wonderful people probably have no idea how amazing and comforting their words feel to someone who needs help, hearing someone say that they care and you’re important is the most comforting thing to me.
They're not just words to comfort, it's hard truth. You ARE important, no matter how much you could hate yourself, there will always be people like me who love you for your mistakes, accept them and see what you are inside, what you want to be, and who you will be.
I would come home so stressed everyday if i had this job. I'm too emotional, the moment i see someone crying, i cry. I would wanna do so much and i cant. Kudos to them and may God give them strength
I've lived in Puerto Rico my whole life and Hurricane Maria was one of the worst experiences ever. The streets The houses The families The cries It was horrible Just imagine going to a gas station and having to make a 6 hour line just to get 5 gallons of gas
I called a suicide number a couple weeks ago because I was really wanting to end the pain, but I finally called. I was so proud of myself for reaching for help. I’m still going through the pain but a little bit not as worse as it use to be. I’m still proud of myself for calling!
I’ve struggled with mental health issues since I was around 11, it’s been an uphill battle with myself. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and I give EVERYTHING I HAVE to help my island. Fuerza mi gente, la lucha es larga pero somos fuertes como roble.
I lost my dad to suicide in 2013, I wish he had reached out for help. I’m so proud of the individuals who reach out, you are worth it, you beautiful souls, I love you.
This video has 20,242 veiws, but kylie jenners baby video has over 50 million veiws. I am not hating on kylie jenner, I am just saying people should really watch this maybe it would show them how they are being selfish and maybe convince them that they need to at least help somehow.
Of course Kylie Jenner's video would have more views as she is more famous. Also, how exactly are people supposed to know this video exists? I doubt anyone would go around googling "puerto rican suicide prevention center video". And another thing, how are individual people being selfish? Most people can barely provide for themselves let alone another country. I'm not saying that America shouldn't be helping (because they should) but, you can't blame individual people when they don't even know what is going on.
i went to a national suicide hotline place and i had to listen to all of the words they said.. it had hurt me. One of them said “I’m tired of it all and I just want to end it but I just don’t want to, I’m only 12!!” and that just sent me
i started tearing up within the first 30 seconds - i can’t even begin to imagine how challenging this job must be. the responders are heroes. i hope they know that.
As someone who’s parents are from Puerto Rico, this honestly breaks my heart. It hurts so much for these people, going through what they’re going too. God Bless all these workers, you’re all absolute angels❤️
Extremely difficult job, may God Bless them with wisdom and knowledge to help restore a right way of thinking to those who suffer with suicidal thoughts.
Im from Puerto Rico. I lived there for seven years... it’s my home. To top it off, I was very isolated and suicidal at one point.... this story rlly hits home for me
*in these types of situations you have to be careful who you hire. Because if you hire a bad hearted person who only shows good to your face but bad to your back, that person may end up crushing lives instead of helping lives.*
this made me feel awful bc i’ve been depressed lately and i just stopped and realized how bad these poor people have it,, i want to find a way to help they deserve so much better 💔 mad respect to those workers
I do not know how these people cope. So sad, so unfair when you realise our government is doing little to help! We are facing a worldwide mental health crisis and Trump wants to give tax breaks to the rich. God help us all.
Wendy Knox-Leet No Puerto Rico is being lazy they have had debt for years they didn’t prepare well enough and now there excepting the u.s to pick it up.Thank god I left Puerto Rico before this all happened but my family still remains.
@@jomarysrivera7366 So it's their fault they got hit with a natural disaster? It's their fault they're depressed? We shouldn't help? What's wrong with you?
WhenCowsFly No im not saying that, why would I want that to happen to my family, my people? Now we know why they weren’t stepping up. They’re government has been horrible for years and they have done nothing to stop it but now with the latest scandal over there we now know where all the money Trump and many other celebrities have donated has gone to. Now that this as come to light they have realized how terrible they’re government is and now they are protesting and making a change. They never really thought about why aren’t homes and roads getting fixed after Millions and Millions of dollars have been donated until now.
Isn’t Puerto Rico a small island rather than a huge country though? They have little to spare and their government isn’t really helping. The U.S. has one of the best economies in the world, no wonder they want America’s help!
These people are god sent. Thank you for helping people like me realize there’s another day on the horizon, and that when it’s dark outside, you can see the stars shining so much more.
as a puerto rican, being part of this devastating tragedy, it was terrible. and the previous government we had, Ricardo Roselló, kept resources to himself. He didn't do anything. It was all so stressful.
Depression and suicide in a lot of people is really just narcissism and selfishness. When you think about the bigger picture, you step back and see that God blessed your life. Whenever you feel depressed, just thank God that you weren't born in a country like this
@@branholo5814 well... I don't believe in god and been tru lots of suicide attempt and i don't think i'm narcissistic but hey! Whatever right? Everyone is different Ahah
@@branholo5814 I mean I believe people go through tough situations, some can't handle it, and it hurts them alot. Of course not everyone believes in God and if you do that is fine. I just feel like instead of doing something because a God, do it for you. People are putting themselves down and though it's all just about them it isn't a good positive thing, it isn't narcissism. Doing good for you, for others, rather than putting God first. I apologize if I came off rude.
@@ione3674 Oh I was talking about people in the Western World who commit suicide on the pure basis of temporary situations of stress. Puerto Rico is a totally different story and we should have helped them a lot more. A lot of kids in the United States are bless to be living here and they commit suicide without thinking about how many good things they really have. You didn't come off rude at all
This honestly breaks my heart. There literally could be someone in the next building suffering from depression. Always be kind to people, you don't know what you can say unintentionally which will be the last straw for them.
We live in one of the richest countries in the world. Therefore why do we let the top 2% take all of the wealth when these people clearly need it more.
I got the info from the United States Census Bureau. A government funded organization that takes massive surveys of American households each year. You can see income statistics on their website. They've also put it into graph form to show how the top percentage of Americans have been gaining more wealth each year while the smaller income level households get very little, if any, growth in wealth at all.
Rose Singer It’s 5% that own over half of the wealth in the world, not America. Still, it’s absolutely shocking. However, I do agree no ones wages should be that high and should be distributed a little more equally to other jobs. I’m not talking socialism, but job wage equality.
I've always wanted to do a job in which I can take care about people mental health and help them going through rough moments and so I really want to be part of the Suicide Prevention Line. This is because I've been struggling with depression and anxiety for so long and hadn't talk about it with nobody but since about a year ago, when I reached out online, I've been so much better. I want to help people that struggles with mental health because I know how it feels but I also know how it feels to be helped and to understood by someone, even if you don't know them. I just want to bring joy into people's lives because now I finally know how it feels to be happy and free.
Im from pr, and part of my family came here. Who disliked the video, im ashamed a humancan even do that.Im doing a project on suicide awareness and prevention. Anyone who is having thos thoughts..... There is still hope
This video makes me sick to my stomach because my sister called a suicide hotline a few days ago and the police came to our house. She was cutting herself a ton. If you are thinking about harming yourself, don’t do it. There is literally no point in it. I understand how it feels to feel lonely, unwanted, or bored of your life. But there is still so much and if you just wait and see then you’ll agree
Katrina survivor here. I related so much to what people were saying. What hurt the most was how quickly we were forgotten. Then it went from indifference at best to ridicule at worst. Show some compassion.
I'm Puerto Rican and honestly it's been almost 4 years since hurricane Maria happend It was a pretty depressing year to be honest, thank God where I live I was with out electricity for like half of month and and 2 weeks with out water. The electricity came the same day that Thanksgiving was, it was actually surprising. But I have friends that unfortunately they didn't get electricity for like a whole year and the only thing I could do is just pray for them But I never lose faith and keep on going
As a Puertorican I say... every time the power goes out while in a virtual class, we panic. The sound of the wind scares my family. When an alarm sounds I get anxious. So, we are still affected by what happened.
I was a crisis response worker and crisis intervention coordinator at a small town of 7500 before, the mental and emotional stress that comes with the job is very draining, I’m surprised I lasted 6 years on the job before moving on, I always thought it would be a 9 to 5 job with a few OT here and there but I definitely thought wrong, there would be times I would work OT 10 shifts straight and I would only have 1-2 days off, the town has a very high-rate of suicide attempts and suicides because of how isolated the community is, I decided to accept a job offer as a Assistant Administrator for a nonprofit charity organization where I work very closely with low-income families, children, and youth, I love my job there and I think I would rather work there for the rest of my social work career.
This is so heartbreaking breaking breaking breaking. Mental health is so important, I hope that anyone that is going through a hard time, that things will be more than okay. It’s so hard to believe but let’s try to believe it daily. I love you :(

It's one thing when your home or your neighborhood is affected, another when it's the whole city. It's scary and I can't imagine what these people feel after months this way.

Delovely 1 the US is definitely not broke. Do you see how much is spent on NASA research?? I know that the Australian government just gave the US $180 million towards research when Australia is struggling.
Why is trump building a wall if he’s so broke?
Just being broke, you will feel hopelesness
Bless these people
hi are you still here on TH-cam If not I be sad
logan paul should watch this
LightUpTheElectro Yeah, he should visit San Juan and see how long he’ll live. I’d bet about 2 hours. 2 birds one bullet.
LightUpTheElectro
The fact that this a joke, hurts my soul...
LightUpTheElectro yes
don't you think this comment is a bit disrespectful? Even though it's justified
Takao Senpai this was 5 months ago.. I think they know.
The difficulty of working at a job like this is that to do your job effectively, you have to really sympathize with the caller or you come off as disingenuous. However, you can't get too involved because it'll wear you down as well.
it’s a loophole. it’s very very depressing
I wonder how they deal with it 😕
r0sy_ m00n_ Everyone says stuff like, “I’m sorry”, “that’s bad”, but nobody tells me that it’s going to be okay and that makes me feel like no one cares
The calls in the beggining were so chill to listen to. Respect to the ladies.
Those responders were born with big hearts. Nothing but love and respect for the heroes behind the line.
It’s so upsetting seeing people who don’t have anyway of getting help, and it’s everywhere. We need to take care of each other and help one another instead of separating ourselves from issues just because they aren’t directly affecting us.
I can't imagine me doing this because I would break down crying
I live in Puerto Rico and I can still remember how hard it was to cope with the pain of losing someone you care about because of the hurricane it was really difficult for me I lost my house I lost everything, I was always thinking of suicide and how I could be free from the pain and guilt. I just hope that none of you have to go thru the same pain.❤
Puerto Rican women here and never knew about this -why aren’t we talking about this more??
My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to all of you ❣️👍😘
Kristine Willems that's not gonna solve everything...
Don't pray. Donate. Help. Take action. We need to stop relying on useless prayers and learn to take these matters into our own hands.
Kristine Willems sorry man but thats not gonna stop me from cutting
goat gaming they didn’t say it would. Where did that come from?
Emmett Olson idk im stupid
the suicide hotline has saved my life more than once. these people are angels
Mine too
Mine too.
This is extremely sad and disheartening, especially so because these are communities of black and brown faces that are being ignored.
Eboné Smiley Why especially? We're all Adam and Eve's descendants.
Stop seeing life on these terms.
Note: There are also Euro-Puerto Ricans. Actually, even the darkest Puerto Ricans hold some sort of European ancestry.
She’s right. People of color are often left out of mental health services. It’s actual fact.
Mae Flower
wdym you don't know why. it's because they are white!
Map Wolf
yes it does. having little European doesn't make you 100% white.
I started crying so much when the First Lady was comforting the person in the phone. I needed that
Incredibly heartbreaking
These wonderful people probably have no idea how amazing and comforting their words feel to someone who needs help, hearing someone say that they care and you’re important is the most comforting thing to me.
They're not just words to comfort, it's hard truth. You ARE important, no matter how much you could hate yourself, there will always be people like me who love you for your mistakes, accept them and see what you are inside, what you want to be, and who you will be.
hi are you still here
I would come home so stressed everyday if i had this job. I'm too emotional, the moment i see someone crying, i cry. I would wanna do so much and i cant. Kudos to them and may God give them strength
I've lived in Puerto Rico my whole life and Hurricane Maria was one of the worst experiences ever.
The streets
The houses
The families
The cries
It was horrible
Just imagine going to a gas station and having to make a 6 hour line just to get 5 gallons of gas
I called a suicide number a couple weeks ago because I was really wanting to end the pain, but I finally called. I was so proud of myself for reaching for help. I’m still going through the pain but a little bit not as worse as it use to be. I’m still proud of myself for calling!
how are you now? 💓
They had to choose the thumbnail with her on two phones. This is serious business.
@SlyRy Omg I didn't realize that until I read your comment. The thumbnail made me laugh a little. I'm sorry.
I’ve struggled with mental health issues since I was around 11, it’s been an uphill battle with myself. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and I give EVERYTHING I HAVE to help my island. Fuerza mi gente, la lucha es larga pero somos fuertes como roble.
Imagine how stressful and hard their work is. I wouldn't even last a minute. Big respect for them❤️
Those people who are working in this center are beautiful. They gave me hope. I cried
I lost my dad to suicide in 2013, I wish he had reached out for help.
I’m so proud of the individuals who reach out, you are worth it, you beautiful souls, I love you.
osnapitzrai thank you! It’s been difficult, I have post traumatic stress disorder from it but I manage :)
My prayers go out to all the people suffering the after-math of hurricane Maria
15 seconds in and I'm already crying 😢
Eleni Belle I didn't cry, but I can agree. This is awful.
I'm so proud to say I work there, it's the hardest work, but knowing that you helped save a life is super satisfying.
As someone who’s parents are from Puerto Rico, this honestly breaks my heart. It hurts so much for these people, going through what they’re going too. God Bless all these workers, you’re all absolute angels❤️
Are You Alive On TH-cam If Not I Be Sad
“They have money for wars but can’t feed the poor.” - Tupac Shakur. He knew what he was talking about
Extremely difficult job, may God Bless them with wisdom and knowledge to help restore a right way of thinking to those who suffer with suicidal thoughts.
*Thank you Joan from England that helped me* *and thank you to everyone that are like these life-saving people*
💖
Im from Puerto Rico. I lived there for seven years... it’s my home. To top it off, I was very isolated and suicidal at one point.... this story rlly hits home for me
Talking to a stranger about my problems is just so weird. Never done it and never will.
*in these types of situations you have to be careful who you hire. Because if you hire a bad hearted person who only shows good to your face but bad to your back, that person may end up crushing lives instead of helping lives.*
I pressed this without knowing it was specifically about María and now I am crying. Truly horrible memories.
I cannot think of a more emotionally draining job. These people are heros.
this made me feel awful bc i’ve been depressed lately and i just stopped and realized how bad these poor people have it,, i want to find a way to help they deserve so much better 💔 mad respect to those workers
I feel for my people, hope they save lives and tell the people on the phone that we do care about them and that we want them to live.
A room full of LITERAL HEROES! Wow, this made me so emotional. My people have been through so much 💔
I do not know how these people cope.
ArtTzi ‘, do you even realize what just happened to their government? And all you have to say is “shame on u” without a reasoning to why.
As someone from Puerto Rico. I dealt with Maria and I tried to end it after this was filmed. Good thingim still here
I feel bad for being depressed compare to these people who lost everything.EVERYTHING. I'm so ungreatful wtf.
@@alanissweetsun918 There's more evidence for God than for pure scientific random variables in the creation of life. I like your thinking though
You didn't come off rude at all
4:35 just imagine getting that call, that someone you love is in a position like that.
I could never do this job, if I knew that someone I just called and talked to died after, I’d be devastated
If I worked there, I would end every call with “I love you”
I would end every call with "I love you".
me too
This honestly breaks my heart. There literally could be someone in the next building suffering from depression. Always be kind to people, you don't know what you can say unintentionally which will be the last straw for them.
We live in one of the richest countries in the world. Therefore why do we let the top 2% take all of the wealth when these people clearly need it more.
I’d like some proof that 2% of our population is wealthy. Any studies you can show me? Creditable studies only, please.
@@Robert-wv4jt so a McDonalds employee should earn the same as a major company owner?
And America is 22 trillion in debt
BOI BOIBOI Hope is something we can't find. Hope leads us to despair... 😢
But there is still so much and if you just wait and see then you’ll agree
every time the phone rang my heart broke just a little bit more
Katrina survivor here. I related so much to what people were saying. What hurt the most was how quickly we were forgotten. Then it went from indifference at best to ridicule at worst. Show some compassion.
I'm Puerto Rican and honestly it's been almost 4 years since hurricane Maria happend
It was a pretty depressing year to be honest, thank God where I live I was with out electricity for like half of month and and 2 weeks with out water.
The electricity came the same day that Thanksgiving was, it was actually surprising.
But I have friends that unfortunately they didn't get electricity for like a whole year and the only thing I could do is just pray for them
But I never lose faith and keep on going
Thats nice man. Dios te bendiga.
As a Puertorican I say... every time the power goes out while in a virtual class, we panic. The sound of the wind scares my family. When an alarm sounds I get anxious. So, we are still affected by what happened.
Man these people are so amazing and strong I can’t imagine how hard it is to have this job
These people must go through so much answering these calls, they all have to have counseling too for the things they have heard. Bless Puerto Rico
"How can I tell someone someone to keep calm if they don't have a place to sleep?"
That hit different
My emotions aren’t strong enough I would break down crying.
i want to become a psychologist more than anything, i want to be that person to encourage people in a way i never received
It took a year for the whole island to have light and water .
This is so heartbreaking breaking breaking breaking. Mental health is so important, I hope that anyone that is going through a hard time, that things will be more than okay. It’s so hard to believe but let’s try to believe it daily. I love you :(
two questions:
1) why is this is my recommended ?
2) why wasn’t this recommended earlier ?
As someone from Puerto Rico, it is heartbreaking to see so many people from my country want to suicide.
loosing everything amd everybody you love will take a toll on the strongest person
I am Puerto Rican and I appreciate everyone
These responders (and other mental health professionals) are some of the bravest people on the planet. I can’t imagine doing this 40+ hours every week. ❤️
I'm so glad there are people like them like I don't even know how to comfort myself I am so thankful
