For the hardware cheats (and cheating on tournaments in general), I think the Computers could be locked down much further. Something much more Kiosk like. For example a readonly RHEL system with only Xorg, Pulseaudio and CS:GO, that doesn't allow the execution of any other files, nor the loading of any custom kernel modules (e.g. drivers). Built-in recoil compensation in mouses will definitely still be achievable, but at least you'd probably be around the same level of hardening as e.g. a PlayStation

      Yeah I complete agree.
It always surprises me that any execution of programs not controlled by some allowed list.
Whilst you point at how Linux can control this, the same is available on Windows as well (GPOs / AppLocker / WDAC / ASR). It just requires a IT tech who knows what they are doing.
Scripting of hardware is normally controlled by the software not the firmware. If the software was controlled, scripting is unlikely.
But even then, an acceptable firmware lists could be built.
If a hardware manufacturer wanted to be considered tournament ready, they'd need to provide signed firmware that offers no scripting.

From Valve: Set Deny rules for the following (can be set for the everyone group or the Windows user players will be using): powershell.exe, cmd.exe, cscript.exe [the script payload used in the documentary is C# run in powershell]. So the reason it is this "easy" is because this LAN is not following guidelines to secure it. If guidelines were followed then this script would be detected and blocked because powershell was executed.
An attacker using badUSB hardware is already limited by the size of the script to get it done fast. This script used a one-liner which does a benign function that will not trigger any security. The script just shows a flickering square dot. I can do something very similar through the console without powershell. In other words, that segment is bait. No actual cheat was running on LAN.
However, the full documentary did reference other cheats that attack the BIOS that DO bypass league anti cheats, but mostly in an online setting. I won't bother citing them here nor will I answer further questions about them or about hardware cheats.

I think the only way to counter hardware cheats is to use hardware anti cheat. Some sort of shim device that plugs into USB and your mouse/keyboard has to be plugged into it like a USB hub. The device inspects/records HID protocol activity(basically keyboard and mouse input) and passthrough the inputs so there's no input delay. Of course the client side anti-cheat needs to verify the device and operating system so you cannot unplug it or plug in another keyboard.
If the device detects illegal/suspicious activities(i.e. injecting cheat program that isn't keyboard/mouse input) the device silently reports the time illegal inputs were made to the anti-cheat software on the PC. This way the officials could reverse engineer the inputs if something sus was found or reported after match ended.
But it's basically a keylogger(privacy and security issue), so it's opening a can of worm for users other than pros playing on tournaments. Before you say "how about the crazy hacks like self driving mouse with wheels", that wouldn't be possible on LAN matches anyways. And yes anything man-made could be defeated so smarter people need to outsmart the smart cheaters.

Was just going to type the same thing.
Wouldn’t cost much to have a inline “usb scan/monitor device” made and it can be hard wired into a mainframe PC dedicated to monitoring every lan players inputs in real-time against a algorithm coded with the games realistic human inputs and reactions.
That data can be easily collected from all online multiplayers of the game in a short period of time.
Far as everyone having to use the same keyboard/mouse I don’t have a issue with that.
Pros can’t bring their own baseballs, footballs, basketballs, etc when they compete. And the other equipment used is highly regulated and approved by the organization prior to being used.

this has been a thing for a while. when the steelseries sensei came out with the arm processor onboard i wrote custom norecoil firmware for it and it was never detected at lan events or on mm/esea/faceit, and that was like at least 8 years ago now. you dont even need to execute it on the computer itself since it runs self contained on the processor within the mouse, and doesnt need to access any memory since the recoil patterns were hard coded into the mouse (they only worked for AK and M4, which were swappable by hitting the DPI button). pretty much anything that has an onboard cpu can do this, and since most keyboards and mice are super duper fancy rgb gamer stuff now, almost all of them have something powerful enough to run this kind of script.

Hardware hacks have been around for years, all the pros use macros so it wouldn't be hard to put scripts into them. Tournaments should either scrutinise the hardware by a third party or be provide everything, the computers, the keyboards, mouse, on private lans that cant be attacked like the Navi Vs Heroic match in EPL. Navi accounts were targeted by DDOS. Either have a body to search and throughly scrutinise the hard ware or just have the tournament say it's their equipment or don't compete.

So, something like this won't be stopped. It will reach a point (if it hasn't already) whereby a few people on the inside (organizers) are paid discretely to provide pre-configured hardware to a certain player. And no, something like this won't be detected even while the game is watched by millions. Pro players are spot on with almost everything gameplay related - the software used in the ESL scene is privately coded in a way that nobody will be able to pinpoint who's running something. And yes, there are currently one or two people in the ESL scene that are using third party.
Even when you take a look at invite-only software, what you're able to do is so discrete that an average Faceit Lvl 7 player (or anyone with decent enough Xhair placement, movement, knowledge, util usage etc) will not be seen as suspect.
When someone is running a 5% chance for every 4th bullet to connect for a headshot provided your Xhair is within a custom pre configured hitbox - and their spray pattern is near perfect as well as their pre-aim, Xhair placement, movement etc - you will never be able to tell, never. Overall this would just seem like a good player who has 10k hours in the game.
It is what it is, and it will stay this way.

  • @jjjacer
    @jjjacer ปีที่แล้ว +3

While hardware may be inputting the cheat, it still is done via software (basically the keyboard is injecting code and running it on the PC, while the code came from the keyboard (usually via a script), it is still running on the PC as a script or executable, so it should still be detectible.) There should be some things that could be setup to stop this from working, disabling scripts, disabling access to command line/powershell, heck you might be able to make it so that only certain programs are able to run under the account (aka CSGO/Steam) and nothing else, treat the tournament computers like a corporate network computer, you can even force USB driver whitelisting to only allow certain brands/models of keyboards/mice.
only hardware cheats that use macros for no recoil, and rapid fire of a semi-auto would be able to really be done straight from hardware without any software needed. If its injecting code, its still software based even though it was done through a hardware attack vector.

Tournaments should just ban mice/keyboards/etc with ANY amount of onboard writeable memory. And if your favorite mouse wasnt available? Tough luck, get something legal.

@@Sol4rFl4r3 yeah except the one huge hole in your theory is that pro players are payed the same win or lose on salary and yes there is incentive to win the tournament and get a bonus, however, it would be extremely risky / counterproductive for a tier 1 pro to attempt cheating at a tournament as it would end their career. This is why on the rare occasions hacks have been found in pro cs it’s usually in games in tournaments for lower tiers as gamers are trying to make it to the top to make the big money you speak about in any way they can and the risk of being caught as a cheater is actually worth the reward of winning in their eyes. I don’t think a single pro in tier 1 scene has any reason to need cheats because they are already insane players and it’s almost impossible to hide cheats while everyone is watching your pov and you are trying your hardest to win … eventually you would make a mistake expose yourself as cheating and it would be game over. Maybe in other esports it’s different but I’m pretty sure in the very top levels there is no hacking in tournaments and it’s mainly tier 2-3 and players trying to make it into the top tier who resort to these efforts.

Because if so that's hilarious lol, you don't know about how advanced cheating has gotten then, nobody can actually tell anymore just by looking, aimbots now are so humanized and look so natural that's it's impossible to tell, esp on a low fov setting like the ones a pro would use, even worse, what if it isn't aimbot at all? What if his mouse just subtly ticks or vibrates every time his crosshair is on someone? There's a million ways cheats can get around people screen-watching, and there's even more ways to get around the people working in the "back room", all it takes is one cheater or cheat-maker to be more intelligent that the IT knuckleheads they hire to work these events, like look at Forsaken, dude was cheating in the most obvious way possible, with a file openly displayed on his computer, and they still missed it until he started just going blatant mid-match lol, imagine if he had done it more subtly... I honestly feel bad telling you all this btw, because i use to be you, and like you, I use to believe in and defend the integrity of the game, convince myself that all the time I put in was for a legitimate cause. If you take a step back, you'd see we are already in that place, IBP happened, thousands of kids are getting scammed out of their skins every day, and pros have already been caught cheating in the past, I really hate to burst your bubble on this because ik how much it hurts but living in delusion isn't good either.

This isn't old csgo lan. You gotta understand that its now a multi million dollar industry in the pro gaming scene and if they didn't have a reason to assure us that pros arent cheating they definitely do now. No million dollar business will leave room for cheating. Maybe if the forsaken incident didn't happen maybe someone could've used cheats a little further on but the lengths to not only cheat but to not get caught on those stages is impossible. There is a reason we don't see anymore foresaken like events happening and if there truly was room for cheaters the other pros can sniff out cheaters and know something is up easily along with the teams DESIGNED to prevent cheaters. If it was just a lan event for a game I could see how people would still be able to cheat but things have changed and if you saw it first hand you'd know that the only person who can hack and not get caught is lester from gta. Xantares is one example of someone ik is 100% cheating in the pro scene and just has never been caught... well that's not true lol, many people actually have exposed him with evidence, including me, but nobody important ever listens or even bothers to look at the evidence and then the evidence usually gets mass downvoted by Turkish players because you dared criticize their "god". We have both physical evidence and demos that show pros are cheating currenty, idk about on lan, but definitely online, we have all the proof in the world, it's just that all high up people in the scene completely ignore it because the scene is completely corrupt. They think like you and completely write off any accusation with "git guud scrub". If you wanna know btw what "evidence" i'm referring to, i can tell you about at least my example Xantares. There's multiple demos reviews of some of his online games a few years ago where he was blatantly aimbotting, like Forsaken level bad, if it was just that btw, i wouldn't call it evidence, but the certainty came when vac sucks discovered he has multiple accounts on cheating websites, where he's a paying subscriber for their services and also one account had a picture on it, where he straight up posted a pic of himself using the cheats lol, undeniable proof. Mouse keyboard cams
mouse pads with reference lines to see and compare actual input and the input displayed on screen
    internal close LAN
    New accounts.
Direct supervision by a third party entity that actually enforces and makes these messures be applied correctly
and base line test for all players.
if streamers and pros were tested jnder these guides they would look o much less impresssive.
cs is about game sense, awareness skills but also luck and gambles and no matter how good you are how much game senseyou have yoj will eventually clear the wrog side of the 50/50 angle and get rekt. These guys i see streamers pros crack guys in ranked never get unlcuky which is weird since it is a part of a game as anyother sport or game. If it wasnt fo luckminvolved thismand other games wouldnt be fun.

Bring back better PS/2 gaming keyboard and mouse, which is better than 1000hz KB and mouse also prevents such hacks in LAN tournaments.

You can also do it via the phone, without it being plugged in. So there is no stopping that. Whoever does the isVisible checks is horrible with coding because it checks through material thickness var below 1.0. No testing limits, I cheated for oh 12+ years possible 16, trust me, them pros are not legit. Some charge $5k for a cheat for leagues.
