I have become fully obsessed with keeping up on this build. Lol. It’s looking amazing! I don’t know if it’s just me but I get more and more excited every upload you do to see this d2 run and drive. Squatch buddy it’s beautiful and you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!!! Thank you for showing us your hard work
Same hear I have followed from the beginning. A random find. But I love anything mechanical and old. In Scotland there are a few D2 Caterpillars I see at vintage shows. My dads brother operated a D2 back in the day.
Hi Squatch. I'm always amazed by the quality of the support and sales documentation Cat provided 'back in the day' to quote your phrase. No computers, no CAD, just good authors, superb draughtsmen, and great type setters. The amount of effort that went in is remarkable. So I thought I should remark on it!
You have just described the fundamental process that built this nation during the early twentieth century. This is how we won WWII. Sheer ingenuity and effort.
Stumbled upon your channel a couple of days ago. Absolutely love this stuff! Your attention to detail, knowledge and ability to articulate is top notch! Awesome work dude!
No snow ever here in sunny BONBEACH Melbourne Victoria Australia Squatch 253. Looks really beautiful, but as Santa Clause says, “ More bloomin’ snow”!!! Merry Christmas mate from me and also Merry Christmas to Squatch Snr and all your families.
Nothing wrong with taking your time, I’ve been watching this project from the start and have enjoyed watching it take shape. Thanks for bringing us along .
I worked at a wastewater treatment plant and we had that type of fitting on our large pipe valves. It took a slip-on hose fitting on a grease gun that used a grease like wax. It would hold the fitting under enormous pressures. I believe steam trains used the same type of fitting.
How one man can get 37.5 hrs of work done in 24 every day is the 9th wonder of youtube. Merry Christmas to you & yours, Squatch! Thank you for all your effort in sharing your hobby.
Nice work Squatch👍 watching this on Christmas eve in England wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing you rebuild those starting engines. Thankyou 👍👍👍
Man I’m so impressed by the amount of work you put into your projects! We all can agree and appreciate your work ethic, you’re doing an amazing job teaching us all about the D2, can’t wait to see that beauty finish! Great job Squatch!👌😎👍
Every video puts it one step closer to a running operating machine, going to be an exciting day when that happens. I love watching things like this as it always a good feeling to see all your work pay off. Merry Christmas.
That image of the traverse leaf spring reminded me of once asking the Caterpillar Historian when Caterpillar stopped installing these and only installed hard bars. They did not know.
Yes I had thought the main issue with the spring is trying to control a blade depth on a vehicle which has suspension, back in the 1960's I remember locals swapping the traverse leaf for a hard bar on the dozers. Many of these guys had cable units and pans they pulled but also dozer blades. Original cats were primarily tractors and benefited from the spring then someone maybe LeTourneau or Baker stuck a push blade on a crawler and the rest was history. In the late 80's and early 90's one of our Defense contractors tried to develop a full width front mounted mine plow which had a computer controlled terrain following blade depth adjustment. With the spring (torsion bar suspension) this task was virtually impossible. Down force from the blade with changing soil conditions and terrain would compress the suspension and make maintaining a specific depth a complex ordeal. Read about the "Grizzly" which was eventually canceled by congress. The replacement had a mine plow with scooter feet out front that maintained depth, all the tank did was push the plow. I ask the maker what happens when the scooter foot hits a mine and his answer was "install another scooter foot"😂 Industrial history really has some interesting moments.
Merry Christmas to you, Squatch, Senior, and Mom! I've been watching this episode by episode since you dragged the D2 home. The milestones keep coming. Good to see the pony engine blocks back! There is light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not a headlight!
I think when you build your new house you should design in some of those concertina timber & glass doors that open up the lounge and dining area to the outside so you can keep that D2 inside on a nice rug in the corner next to your tractors.
On the Northern Island of New Zealand there is a nice museum on the once vibrant a Kauri timber industry they had there where they clear cut all the old growth Kauri trees. There is a gray D5(?) there, you can see the track cut marks in the concrete by the door as it was moved in.
@@christophermiller833 Could've laid down a few planks of Kauri or old tires & the grouser plates wouldn't have left marks. But I suppose those marks are like fossilized dinosaur footprints now.
Man I couldn't wait to get off work to watch this episode! I just told the wide it's like a season premiere every time you share a video. I really enjoyed watching this build. Love that it's got all original paint and original to that generations parts. Cheers squatch253 looking forward to the next one
Great update as always. I originally came here for a truck video I found in a search, fell for the land projects, but I have learned so much about tools and techniques watching this Cat come together. I am truly excited for each episode because I learn something each time. The content is truly appreciated. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!
Cat were indeed very generous with the shaft wear clearance of 50 thou. That’s 1 and quarter mini bananas in the French measuring system we have had foisted on us in the UK. The final shots of the kit of assemblies shows just how far you have got. Look forward to the starting engine rebuild vids !
Hi Squatch, Another TH-camr Kurtis from Cutting Edge Engineering Australia where they have fully embraced the metric system often uses ‘bananas’ for inches when giving an imperial comparison as for those not familiar with metric as a bit of a running joke. So much so that I think one of their US subscribers had some wooden rules made with bananas on them instead of inches. For us of a certain age in the uk we are familiar with both systems and use either as convenient. Hope this helps !
I have the same harbor freight press in the shop and it makes the exact same noise... when I heard it on this video it made me realize they must all do that and mine isn't more defective than the average. It does press things really hard when I ask it to (sometimes to my detriment if my setup wasn't good enough) so I guess I shouldn't complain.
Sir, I think you could’ve been a surgeon! Your attention to detail is amazing. Can’t wait for the next video update. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.
It is amazing that the engine build gave so much grief trying to source parts and now the undercarriage is all excellent. Looking forward to the starting engine build
so relaxing to see and well explained and a nice and clear. a nice and information. thank you from the UK. i like the patina it tells the story of the life of the machine.
I've been following several years now. Just an old 60-70's dirt tracking street rat. DFW area I grew up in was a haven for gearheads plus some extraordinarily talented car painters like L J White and Dirty of Dallas! (Every thing LJ shot had a 4 pointed Star w/rays. Dirty jobs ways had greasy looking hand shooting the Finger!) Anyway, just enjoy watching and appreciate the meticulousness!
Squatch--this will probably sound weird, but thanks for showing us the footage out into your spare parts yard. We haven't seen any snow whatsoever here in south central Kansas yet and with Christmas almost here, it was refreshing to see. 😂👍
Squash, you rule!! Your attention to detail is amazing. Love to watch your rebuilds and hear you explain your reasoning for decisions. And I hope someday your "sentence" at the Ford "prison" will be complete so you can pursue your real love....TRACTORS!!! I miss seeing Senior. Let us know how he's doing. Loved watching him with the M. And his remarks on items that makes your eye twitch. Lol. Keep it coming and God's blessings on you all. Billy Morton
I have been around vehicles and mechanical things most of my life being a son of a mechanic. I truly enjoy your content. It is funny but two of my favorite creators to follow are you and Mike Patel. Two complete different ends of the build series spectrum. Thank you for all of your content and time you put into this.
Hello and Happy Holidays. I just read part of another reply to your channel. I too am obsessed with your channel. Every time I see a new video it's like a gift on Christmas morning. Looking forward to the next video. Be well and safe.
Tri build I’ve been waiting for them to come back been watching this channel for 4ish years never gets old even my twin in California I’m in Oregon watches you keep it up brother and btw loved your videos of 4014 I’m a former and Ho scale modeler 😀
Wow! It is really coming down to being able to test the engine, trans, clutch’s, final drives, or are you going to wait till the tracks are on, and all tin tin and guards before testing the drive train. Imagine you will probably test the drive train by hand before testing with the engine. Seems like a month or two and you could be out for a test drive. Although guess that depends on how long it takes to put together the tracks. Hopefully you don’t have to rotate pins and bushings. I am getting excited to see the tri-build and see that diesel running.
Enjoy the videos through out the year ,as another year comes to an end I wish you and you family Merry Christmas and all the best in the new year , hoping it's much better
Awesome video as usual. Couldn't wait for the pony series and dove headfirst into my D47U pony. I was always told it's only nuts and bolts so get to it. I did try to do a Squatch253 job and must say I'm very pleased with the results. A dependable pony and pinion make it easier to use. My two year old grandson loves it and it gets quite a few miles on it when he visits.
Let's have a perfect Squach Christmas!! Please, please, please, read the "Cat 10 and 15" book by the fire on Christmas eve. I love pictures so we have to see all of them and "Extra comments" from the reader is very much encouraged. Then open up a few unopened cosmoline parts. I love the sound when you open them and those vintage parts see the light for the first time in many many years. Maybe have a few brass, bronze and favorite small parts twinkling near the fire? Yea this may sound odd but what a perfect Cat Christmas? Use your creative video making. Thanks!! Matt "still looking for my Cat with the good undercarriage." Hanson
Lovely!! we are about to see the final setup Starter Engine and all. I was impressed by the look of the cleaning of the grease and the look of the old iron "hardly" worked. Merry Christmas Squatch253 and Family.
Even tho labor intensive the undercarriage work over is important to all us nerds Really anticipate the pony build and test run of 3400. I have no doubt will be a successful run
Thank you for another great video....... I always get a little bit excited when I get a new video notification from your channel. Love the detail, you would make a great teacher! Many blessings to you and your family, and to all the followers! Hoping for a awesome 2022!
as always, great video with lots of good content. I am getting ready to tear into my d2 and i find these video's very helpful. I also am about to purchase a 1937 22 that runs along with a parts tractor for it!
I've never done any under carriage work, closest im came is putting on New grouser bar, through watching your videos,I sure understand why it cost so much.
Can’t get over how pretty those bushing are
Your explanations are really interesting. I could watch your videos all day long.

The D-2 is coming along nicely. The Old Girl is looking Good... Cant wait to hear that CAT Engine PURRRRRR...LOL..Great Job on it Sir. And Video...
I wanted to see you coat the slide shims with grease to prevent corrosion. Lovely video, clearly a ton of work.
The engineers that first thought this stuff up were some kind of smart !!
