I am truly having a hard time tonight making this video and knowing this man has left our military community. He was a role model for me when I was young. He entertained many of us, inspired many more and served his country with every part of his mind, body and soul. I cannot express the respect I have for this marine and true patriot of the United States of America. I hope you can share this video and remember some moment in your life when you first experienced his personality. Whether it was in a film, show, in person or just in hearing. He will be sorely missed. Semper Fidelis. Rest in Peace Gunny.
Gunny WAS ' Full Metal Jacket ' , he taught his Marines to survive and to thrive. Considering that he did that for real, is it any wonder he nailed it? If you served in the late 80s or early 90s, theres a chance you had a peace sign strategically hidden on your helmet. If you had a Commander like mine, it was probably accompanied by ' Born to Kill ' war is truly the duality of man.
Matsimus I'm pretty young at 18 and I watched fullmetal jacket sometime last year. I thought his performance was outstanding and would notice the huge following he had making references to him with respect. To this day I still find him in different corners of entertainment with a pleasant surprise. F
john dates Patton said some badass things my favorite quote of his goes like this and I quote, “No poor bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making other bastards die for their country”.
I can only imagine the ass-chewing Death got when he came for Gunny. Death: “I’ve come for your soul” Gunny: “Take my soul?! You couldn’t take candy from a baby in that little black dress!! Is that little scythe supposed to scare me? If I wanted a toothpick, I’d have ripped your spine out!” Death: “I...” Gunny: “You’ll speak when spoken to scumbag! And God help you if the next words out of your mouth aren’t ‘Yes Sir’. Now hurry the fuck up! Death isn’t riding a pale horse today, your lanky ass is gonna PT all the way to Heaven!!” RIP Gunny. Semper Fidelis
I remember when my dad showed me Full Metal Jacket when I was in the 3rd grade to try to get me out of my “military craze” and to try to get me to not want to join the military. This man was a huge influence on me as a child and still is and now I ship to Marine Bootcamp July 9th. Despite my Dad’s wishes I still signed for infantry. God bless you Gunny.

A true legend has died, The world won’t be the same without him, A true Marine and a true Hero. For me this is heartbreaking because when I found out he died I had just finished watching Full Metal Jacket
I saw the flags at half mass today and some one said it was for a Bush family member passed away. Well I thought it was for R. Lee Ermey that's what I believe and I'm gonna stick to it.
What really pissed me off is how our wonderful, biased, liberal media and major news stations barely covered the passing of R. Lee Ermey, but when Michael Jackson or Prince died, it was almost a weekly story for years after their funerals.
synthoify wow, I though the same thing. Don’t matter, it’s for who we want it to be for. RIP Gunny and Mrs Bush. She better watch out! There’s a new devil dog on the prowl in heaven.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gunny at a wounded warrior shooting competition at the San Antonio Police training center a few years back. He was a really approachable fellow, and very nice. My friend was and still is the commander of the local chapter of the Young Marines and I and my 10 year old son were his invited guests. I was privileged to take a photo of the Gunny with my son which I will always cherish. Rest in peace Gunny! Semper Fi!

Insanitywelcome - He came aboard ship too on an aircraft carrier, but the best part was that he didn’t sit with the officers. He came and sat with us lowly enlisted men for chow.
Incredibly disheartening how hollywood blackballed him because he was a conservative. His honor and love of this country cost him his career. He stood strong.
I won't cry I'm a man... I don't want no teenage queen I just want my M 14 If I die in the combat zone Box me up and ship me home Pin my medals upon my chest Tell my Mom I done my best Fuuuuuuuuuck!!!
Thor Odinson “I won’t cry I’m a man” I don’t know. After nine combat tours this hero’s death is hitting just as hard as all of the others...R.I.P. Gunny!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: [Hartman gives a speech to the graduating recruits] Today, you people are no longer maggots. Today, you are Marines. You're part of a brotherhood. From now on until the day you die, wherever you are, every Marine is your brother. Most of you will go to Vietnam. Some of you will not come back. But always remember this: Marines die. That's what we're here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. And that means YOU live forever.
IF you ladies leave my Island...IF you survive Recruit Training....you will be a weapon! You will be a Minister of Death, praying for War! RIP, Gunny- wherever you are. SNAFU is of course better than TARFU, and hopefully not FUBAR. And you don't want to know about BOHICA. And remember, flush twice- it's a long way to the mess hall. ;)
“No one can hear you scream in space, unless it is the battle cry of a United States Marine!”~ R. Lee Ermey in Space: Above And Beyond I still seriously can’t believe he’s gone. He might as well have been a role model for all of us in some way. Semper Fidelis, Gunny. ‘Til Valhalla. “Marines may die; that’s what we’re here for. But the marine corps will live forever. Therefore, YOU will live forever.”
I had the pleasure of meeting Gunny at a gun store in Palmdale California about 10 years ago. I was off duty frommy job as a Police officer and looking at some guns I was interested in buying when I heard his familiar voicespeaking to the store owner from beside me. We spoke for a few moments about guns and the Marine Corps since I served in it myself as an Infantryman in 2/5 back in the 80's.I told Gunny about my (then) 2 young sons and he spoke about his wish that his son would have joined the Corps.(Don't know if that ever happened)On this day of Gunny's passing, I think about my oldest son being in the Marine Corps for a year now and his brother shipping off to San Diego Boot Camp next week and I'm reminded of a saying Gunny Hartman made in Full Metal Jacket."Marines die. That's what were here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. So YOU will live forever."Semper Fi Gunny, and know that the Marine Corps and its proud legacy will continue on as long as brave and daring young men have the guts to put their country before themselves and step on those yellow foot prints.
Saved by grace fuck you and your bullshit goofy belief!! Read a couple science books and grow up and stop believing in Santa Claus and the easter bunny!! I have nothing against religion until some dumb fuck says some bullshit like that! Unfuck yourself maggot!!!
He came to my Marine Corps ball back in 2012. It was an honor to have met him. It's funny i expected him to be loud, rather he was soft spoken, but funny. RIP Gunny
Today, you people are no longer maggots. Today, you are Marines. You're part of a brotherhood. From now on until the day you die, wherever you are, every Marine is your brother. Most of you will go to Vietnam. Some of you will not come back. But always remember this: Marines die. That's what we're here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever! And that means YOU live forever.
General MacArthur once said old soldiers never die, they just fade away. He did not die without permission, he just moved onto a better place. Rip gunny
Oh I am proud and I do agree it is what he'd want. Still that pang of sadness will be there for a bit, having grown up watching Full Metal Jacket with my dad so many times (dad being a Marine and having nothing but praise for The Gunny), watching Mail Call, Lock N Load, and a lot of his other movies and cameos in movies/show.
Drill sergeants are Army, the Marine Corps calls them drill instructors. But yes, R. Lee Ermey's depiction of a DI was as authentic as it gets. FMJ took me right back to boot camp 48 years ago.
This guy was freaking awesome! Met him several times and talked for a long time. He was talking smack too. Very funny and down to earth guy. I am pissed because I did not see any tributes to him on TV. I could be wrong and missed them, but other people said the same thing. He did other work besides Full Metal Jacket. Check his Bio out. Oooooorah! Semper Fi Brotha!
RoughNek72 the pearly gates are probably a much more interesting and traumatizing place now, I can just imagine him giving a Fullmetal Jacket style verbal beating to anyone who passes through.
I first saw R Lee Ermey on the History Channel back when they used to do WW2 practically 24/7 during his Mail Call show. Then I met him again whenever Medal of Honor went to the Pacific... and later to the show Space: Above and Beyond. He had been a staple of my childhood and it is sad to see him pass on. :(
R. Lee is gone, but let's keep his salty, hard-nosed legacy alive by loving and protecting our great Country dammit. The torch has been passed into our hands.
I still not beleive it, I grew up watching Call Mail and Lock'n Load, watched Full metal jacket, I seriosly like this guys work, an exemple to be followed. Respect from a Brazilian, proud of his military family and future "Silent Service" officer.
Wow, I'm just a day off from his birthday. March 23rd for me. 1st time I seen him was in the frighteners. I eventually watched full metal jacket, and then pretty much all of lock n load. Great man, great actor. Thanks for your service for our freedom and R.I.P. gunny.
I met Gunny a few years back when I was working in the defense industry. I pulled up next to him in the head and started up a conversation with him while we took a piss. We continued to talk outside as we walked back to our respective booths. We stopped and talked for almost 30 mins, about the Corps, a bit about a few of his films, my experience in the Corps and law enforcement, he was nice enough to act concerned about health issues and my subsequent retirement from the Corps, guns, and the future of the wars and our Corps. As we parted he stopped and reached into his pocket to give a challenge coin but put those back and reached into his other pocket, producing another challenge coin stating " those are for everyone else, these are people I like." He gave me a challenge coin with his likeness on it, shook my hand and gave me his trademark "ooo rahh". I don't know if I got a "special" coin or not, but it's special to me. He was a hell of a nice guy, who was a jarhead through and through. I don't get starstruck and I've met a bunch of famous people but Gunny made me feel awesome and acted as though he really cared about me and that he was one of the reasons I joined the Corps ( I love Siege of firebase Gloria). The Corps and the U.S. military lost a great spokesman today and I know there is a whole generation of Marines who joined because of him and when people think of a Marine, R. Lee Ermey is who they picture. I think he was honored by that. Fair winds and following seas and remain Semper Fi, Gunny. Ooooo Rahhhh indeed....
A great marine and a great actor. Made the movies way more believeable, heard he drilled the actors hard in Full Metal jacket, just like you saw him in the movies. He will be missed. *salute*
I like when they do that. Just like in Platoon, the actors had to go trough the same shit the soldiers had to go trough during training. Helped as well that Oliver Stone was a veteran himself and had the actors suffer for full realism. Same with Full metal Jacket, it just gives that extra touch to a movie.
*Wiping away some tears* You were a role model for me and were one of the reasons that I was inspired to join the military.May you fly with the angels and know that the streets of heaven are safer with you there. Sleep peacefully and know that you will be sadly missed by so many. *Crisp Salute*
Thank you, Virtuoso. :-) I was thinking of that, but could not remember it exactly. The streets of heaven are guarded by United States Marines. Rest well, Gunny. You've earned it.
Thank you, Jason127x99 :-) You are too kind. Gunny reminds me of my father and Grandfather who was a gunner in the South Pacific in WW II. I lost my grandfather at the age of 95 in 2014. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him or miss him. *Sings softly* *Weeps gently for Gunny and my grandfather* "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli..."
I grew up watching Mail Call, I’d wake up early as my dad went to work and watch Gunny, and it sparked my interest in history, and weaponry. Rest In Peace Gunny
This saddens me so. I remember being a small child and not being able to contain my excitement when Gunny's Mail Call came on the History Channel. I will say that R Lee Ermey was one of my motivations to always aspire to join the military. He is irreplaceable. May he rest in peace.
Mail Call, back when the History Channel was still worth watching. When you consider most of his performance in Full Metal Jacket was largely improvised and that he was originally intended to be the movie's technical advisor, which he still was, you have to be really impressed.
What a great tribute video to a great man a real inspiration hearing about his life story I was genuinely really sad to hear of his death rest in peace gunny when I put my uniform on today I will give you a salute gunny . Brothers in arms the US and the UK 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸💂
I met him in Iraq where there was a line of troops waiting to meet him, hours, and he stayed to greet and meet each one and it was not an easy task as he was well up in age even then. A real stand-up, great guy.
A lot of people will remember him for his role in Full Metal Jacket. Some leading a mission to find out what Andy got for his birthday...I will miss him knowing that when not filming a movie or show, he dedicated almost 100% of his time to veterans, troops, cops, firefighters and so on. He used his fame to make other happy..to simply see them and shake hands. Sure he knows they knew of him from one or two rolls...but hey if meeting him made them forget for a few seconds that they are stationed in the desert, had a long shift while walking a beat...or maybe injured on foreign soil...THAT is what I will remember him for. That and one hell of a war face! Rest Easy Gunny!
R.I.P gunny. You saved my life and helped raise me after my dad passed away in his 2nd tour and you were the only one who came to his funeral and stayed after and said its alright and I was lucky he died so old compared to some who never will known their dad period. You came up and called me a maggot and scooped my 11 year old butt up and said "its fucked up and hurts and always will but you arnt alone. Even when your alone you arnt alone. He wipped my tears and said stop whining because he and my dad will always be here in this moment when you need him or me. You just have to think back a little more the older you get. I can't remember exact words he said but I can bits and pieces and the last thing he said before driving me home was crying is easy and for the weak. Smiling is the hard part and the end goal of crying in the first place, its our way of finding out how you really feel. You don't cry because your sad. You cry so you can find out how to smile again when there is no reason to smile. I'm not sure if he came to the funeral from knowing him or if he was just there and wanted to pay respects but he saved my life. And I went to his funeral and was the last one to leave and thanked him for saving my life and introduced him to my son who was the same age I was when I met him. Love you gunny. Thank you for helping raise me and thousands of more kids in sure I'm not the only one. My son promised to become a marine that day ans I have no doubt he will become a great man like gunny
I am truly having a hard time tonight making this video and knowing this man has left our military community.

He came out and spoke to us in Kuwait, this man is my hero. Carry on Gunny, we have the watch.
Insanitywelcome - He came aboard ship too on an aircraft carrier, but the best part was that he didn’t sit with the officers. He came and sat with us lowly enlisted men for chow.
pyronite59 the man was all manner of amazing.
He’ll live on forever a true American legend and USMC his movies and cameos were the best even as sheriff Hoyt
Rest In Peace Gunny. You were a class act.
I have never smiled so much and felt so sad as I did watching this.
Incredibly disheartening how hollywood blackballed him because he was a conservative. His honor and love of this country cost him his career. He stood strong.
1. Nobody owed him a job.
2. For someone who was supposedly blackballed, he was in a surprising number of movies, shows and video games.
Buster McGhee oh brother! give me a break.
Buster McGhee Hollywood hates conservatives but they love Anti-America liberals.
Mathematically Impossible seriously they shitcanned him for being himself shows you how phony that place is
@@patrickbrennan1317 Hollywood is hollyweird. Can't take them seriously.
How am I able to smile and shed a tear at the same time?
You are not alone.

“No one can hear you scream in space, unless it is the battle cry of a United States Marine!”~ R. Lee Ermey in Space: Above And Beyond
I still seriously can’t believe he’s gone. He might as well have been a role model for all of us in some way. Semper Fidelis, Gunny. ‘Til Valhalla.
“Marines may die; that’s what we’re here for. But the marine corps will live forever. Therefore, YOU will live forever.”
Godspeed Gunny, tailwinds and following seas.
A damn shame, but I'm sure wherever he is now...everyone there is being whipped into shape. Definitely a man to be admired and remembered.
Jaeger_Bishop Careful, you’ll attract the militant atheists.
And slow salute. RIP Gunny and semper- fi!!!
So YOU will live forever."Semper Fi Gunny, and know that the Marine Corps and its proud legacy will continue on as long as brave and daring young men have the guts to put their country before themselves and step on those yellow foot prints.
blkyank1 thank you for your service and welcome home.I hope both your sons come home safe and sound.
Marines don't die, they just go to hell and regroup
Definitely one of the saddest day of my life.
Marines die, but the Marine Corps lives forever. And that means you live forever!
RIP Gunny. Semper fi!
Rip a true legend
One hell of a guy.
This man was a legend . Semper Fi Gunny. Hats off to you....now give em hell on the other side.
Wutaii1 Nostalgia amen

Saved by grace fuck you and your bullshit goofy belief!! Read a couple science books and grow up and stop believing in Santa Claus and the easter bunny!! I have nothing against religion until some dumb fuck says some bullshit like that! Unfuck yourself maggot!!!
Chris Ingram I find a lot of what you're saying offensive, cause I'm Christian, we don't HAVE to stop believing in God
He came to my Marine Corps ball back in 2012. It was an honor to have met him. It's funny i expected him to be loud, rather he was soft spoken, but funny. RIP Gunny
It's called good acting.
“Do I look like a road map to you?” “Well I am a road map”
Stand down marine, your tour of duty on earth is finished. Heaven needed the best DI for its ranks. Semper fi marine. 😥
General MacArthur once said old soldiers never die, they just fade away. He did not die without permission, he just moved onto a better place. Rip gunny
marius kuhrau well said
Rest In Peace R. Lee Ermey (Gunny)
He’s killing enemy combatants in heaven now.
Some of those outtakes are fantastic, he will be missed.
It is truly a sad time now. You will be forever missed Gunny. Semper Fi, from Sgt Hutch wherever you are I hope you are giving the recruits hell.
kenhutchens513 Don't be sad. Be proud and strong. It's what he'd would want.
Nobody in the history of films was such a good drill instructor actor! RIP comrade R. Lee Ermey
How many di actors were actual war time di?
Drill sergeants are Army, the Marine Corps calls them drill instructors. But yes, R. Lee Ermey's depiction of a DI was as authentic as it gets. FMJ took me right back to boot camp 48 years ago.
dont have to act when your the real thing.
ScopeDog yeah, many people know me. From Boris, uamee, blyatman, people like that.
Gunny isn’t dead! Gunny will never die! He will live on forever in our hearts and minds!
ARCHANGEL marines dont die until ordered to and he was not ordered to
Kyler Ellis Well said Kyler!!!
ARCHANGEL thank you, and may gunny be fortuitous in his job to defend the gates of heaven with an m1 garand
Clearly did other work. At least half of this is “Mail Call”, and he is was the go-to voice actor for anything militant.
The news of his death makes me so sad, I loved watching his films, what a great guy. Condolences to his family and friends
Rip gunny, give the afterlife hell!
He will!
He most likely took over for St. Peter!
RoughNek72 the pearly gates are probably a much more interesting and traumatizing place now, I can just imagine him giving a Fullmetal Jacket style verbal beating to anyone who passes through.
I can't wait to die!!!!
Oorah
I first saw R Lee Ermey on the History Channel back when they used to do WW2 practically 24/7 during his Mail Call show. Then I met him again whenever Medal of Honor went to the Pacific... and later to the show Space: Above and Beyond. He had been a staple of my childhood and it is sad to see him pass on. :(
nice fact, gunny was born on the same day the great escaped occured
Thank you,Gunny, for serving our country and being a great American hero.
And one hell of an actor to boot!
pretty sure he wasnt acting lmao
One of my favourite roles of him besides Full Metal Jacket, was in Se7en. He is also pretty fun in commercials.
Talked to the Gunny several times over the years. ALWAYS entertaining. Semper Fi Gunny.
Frank Nowakowski Semper Fi carry on Gunny.
“Marines die, that’s what we’re here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. AND that means you live forever.” - The Gunny. Semper Fidelis marine
One of the few videos to ever make me cry
R. Lee is gone, but let's keep his salty, hard-nosed legacy alive by loving and protecting our great Country dammit. The torch has been passed into our hands.
Best words I've read all day. Met him in Qatar in 2004 while our unit was going through some R&R
I still not beleive it, I grew up watching Call Mail and Lock'n Load, watched Full metal jacket, I seriosly like this guys work, an exemple to be followed. Respect from a Brazilian, proud of his military family and future "Silent Service" officer.
Guess the angels were misbehaving
Rest in peace gunny
Metal Gear rip gunny 😭😭😭😭😢😢😢
GOD GIVE US BACK R.LEE ERMEY AND WILL GIVE U KIM KARDASHIN !!!
Oh hell yeah
The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.
-General Douglas Mcarthur
That's right, they're conned into bearing all the karmic burden.
RaYze dark those of us who serve surely don't profit from it
Honestly thought R. Lee was to stubborn to pass. Guess it was time for him to report in. Semper fi marine.
Someone else hit the nail on the head. For alot of us Gunny was the Mr. Rogers of Guns. Grew up watching Mail Call, and he will be missed.
That was me, he's the reason for my passion for firearms
SEMPER FI Gunny
I looked up to him so much during my childhood. I am devastated at his passing. Rest In Peace, Gunny. Until Valhalla.
RIP my childhood memories
Here lately we have lost so many amazing people it's sad to them gone but they will be remembered by the people who loved them 😭
More than a man, less than a god. We lost a legend tonight.
A great marine and a great actor. Made the movies way more believeable, heard he drilled the actors hard in Full Metal jacket, just like you saw him in the movies.
He will be missed.
*salute*
Jor Gaming In Full Metal Jacket, the actors in the passing out parade were genuinely drilled by him in rehearsal
Mary Clark of the army and the navy ever look on heavens scenes
They'll find the streets are guarded
By United states marines
Well said Mary! You're 100% right on that! 👍👍👍👍
He may have physically left us, but his service will never be forgotten, Rest In Peace Gunny, Semper fidelis
That's one hell of a powerful scene at the beginning. It was beyond acting. He was as real as you can get. Rest in peace, Gunny.
😥
