Great video Mat! Greetings from Germany. Being assigned to an armored infantry battalion in 1997 I can still hear the Marders driving around accompanying Leopard 2 on the training grounds
When I arrived in Germany, we were bouncing around quite merrily in our M-113s, like most everyone else out there. We were out on exercise in January 1977, 1st major winter Ex. in a long while, anyway, I will confess to being shocked when we crossed path with Panzergrenadiere outfitted with Marders, whilst keeping abreast of their Leopard 1s and the new Leo 2s, Canada had just acquired Leo 1s from Germany, dropping our Centurions. The Dragoons were just training on them (Leos), familiarisation: basic maintenance, operating on/off road and gunnery at the time using borrowed Leopards from the HEER. Talk about ''junk envy'', we had transitioned from mounting an M1919 Browning 7.62mm to a .50 cal, and this hot-rod sported a 20mm autocannon with a coaxial MG-3! It was all pretty impressive, we would be running along some road, the Leos & Marders were keeping abreast of us in the farmers field before overtaking M-113. I also got my first up close look at a Warthog, as we were buzzed (30-40 m over us) along some forested road, talk about seeing your life flash before your eyes! As usual you provide a balanced appraisal and analysis, well done lad. Be well and stay safe
The Marder is in use since 1971, whereas the Bradley was not deployed until 10 years later. The USA was lucky that there were no major conflicts in the mid to late 1970s, or they would have had to fight with M113s.
When the German Army reformed in the 1950s they ordered what was the first IFV (well before BMP) called the "Shutzenpanzer lang" (Infantry Tank, Long) based on WW2 experience using the SdkFz.251 armored half track as an APC. The German army in WW2 had found it took far to long to get infantry to the front because of the number of times and the distance they needed to dismount from the battle. The Shutzenpanzer lang not only had much more Armour it had a 20mm gun for the fire support role and no doubt would have survived air attack well. Despite its flaws the Shutzenpanzer lang led to the Marder. In WW2 there were plants to develop the Czech Panzer 38 as a 5 man (half squad) IFV. Patton made a comment along the lines that the armored M3 Half track was more dangerous to US troops than the Germans because US troops would get over confident in them. -One tragedy for Ukraine is that during the years of neglect of defense spending in Germany the upgrade of the Mader's 20mm gun turret to a 30mm gyro stabilized KUKA designed unit with improved thermal vision was rejected by the German parliament. That definitely would have made the Marder more powerful than the exceptional bradely.
@@williamzk9083 yes but they didn´t upgrade the Marder because of the Puma IFV it has the 30mm gyro stabilized gun but yeah for me one of the Marder´s biggest "flaws" is not having a stabilized gun
When I was a kid we have been to an open day at the army compound my Uncle was stationed. At home he told my Grandmother that they use the Marder as stationary show vehicle he sunk by accident in a river during a NATO maneuver. So at the event I was also climbing in it and telling every Visitor proudly that my uncle sunk this tank. Meanwhile my uncle died in shame beside the Marder trying to signal me to stop talking. So I can state today here " It cant swim" 😀 That`s what I remember for sure,

Truly exceptional video! This was very interesting, educational, and thought provoking. I'm a former Smith Barracks, Baumholder, Germany 1st Armored Division Bradley crew member from the 90's and I never knew the Germans had such cool stuff.

The Marder saved the German paras in Afghanistan in the battles of Kunduz. If it weren’t for their weapons the paras would have been outflanked and overrun.
The Marder is second only to the Bradley. It's anti tank capability is just sub par compared to the TOW missiles and the heavier round of the Bradley makes for better anti-pretty much anything lighter than an MBT or concrete bunker.
If we were to assign generations to IFVs, the Marder would be the first second generation IFV IMO, a vehicle that was built on the knowledge gained with its predecessor‘s strengths and weaknesses in _practical_ application, avoiding many of the pitfalls that impeded earlier designs.
With the intro "music" I cannot help but wonder if the "vocals" were lifted from a mixed doubles tennis match or German home-made adult entertainment video's. I'd say the Milan would still have one advantage - no dismounts required. Infantry can shoot tanks, sure. But it's not recommended to attempt to do that from inside a Marder. Cramped isn't nice for the infantry and that what it was designed for. You can make a vehicle small and low profile... I can understand the need for a Puma with more modern features and room for updates.
Good overview of an outstanding machine. They did consider upgrading to Marder 2, with a real turret, but the cold war wound down; the prototype is in Koblenz(?) _ Add the CV-90 turret, it would be close to perfection.
CV-9035 is my favorite and I think should should be adopted by the Canadian Army, this business of using wheeled vehicles has proven to be incapable of dealing with difficult terrain like what was encountered in Afghanistan. It truly shows how incompetent our government and decision makers are. Even if we bought some used CV9040's or Bradleys from our neighbors to the south we'd be in a better position for a real war.
When the Germans make a vehicle they make the best a car a Tank, I still remember coming across a Leopard driver training Tank on a muddy range somewhere in Germany I had just drove over the same course in my Chieftain it struggled then this Leopard came along and flew over the course at twice the speed I could do as they passed they smiled and waved at us.
