I live in Palm Beach Gardens and have a canal literally in my back yard. Whenever the wife and I are looking for a good fish fry I go hook up my ultralight gear with some crawlers and a bobber and in 15 minutes the Lord blesses us with these delicious fish. Thanks for the video.

My grandpa had a silver stag knife he bought around 17 years ago and he lived by that knife till the day he passed. That is one thing that he was buried with and I would love to have another. And one day I will.

Yes Rob when I first started catching them in my back yard (Rim canal) a few years ago, I also thought they were an Oscar fish (they look VERY similar until you get used to noticing their slight differences) but yes these are Mayan Cichlid's and I was amazed how extremely WHITE the meat is when I started filleting them. When I started catching them, i was telling and showing photos on my phone to Lief and Festus (at Gerrards Bait&Tackle shop) they were the 1st to correct me and teach what a Cichlid was. My technique in the canal is to chum them up and get them frenzied by tearing a slice of bread into 4or5 long strips floating and watch for the MORE aggressive hits, after just 1min or so I start putting a tiny doughball on the tip of my hook and/or beetle spin like you. Once they are in a frenzy - I am able to catch more in less time.

I caught some in August on my trip to West Palm beach. 1st time having them. I was on the fence as well until I started filleting them. I deep fried some and baked some and the fish is delicious. You are right....someone else told me they are the poor mans snapper. Doesnt taste like a freshwater fish at all. I cant wait to come back and catch some. Hopefully I can catch enough to bring back to Louisville for some friends to try. I think theyll love it. Thank you for sharing this video.

Those beetle spins work good on smallmouth bass in the pretty little streams up in Pennsylvania. I'm not talking about any big fish. Take a ultra lite rod and reel and a beetle spin and you can have a ball catching 1/2 and 3/4 lb. smallmouth.

I used to do what you do with the ice. I have found the flavor of the fish is dramatically improved if you take a knife and sever the spinal cord at the base of the head, then toss into the ice water. You'd think it wouldn't matter, but it does!

He was a part timer he said oh yeah I know him after I explained he made a video about this place a couple weeks ago lol. Anyway I got some shrimp there to fish on the pier at Jupiter inlet. I caught my very first ever Look down or moon fish.I caught 8 of them and gave them away to some other rangers on the pier. Cool place in Jupiter but there is not many places that you can fish from shore other than the beach.Oh and I did hit a karaoke bar in Jupiter. Good time there.hehe, Cheers from Ontario Canada.

    Hello, Robert.
I've seen you for a long time, even though I've never fished in my life. I am from Honduras in Central America. There is a place called Francisco Morazan hydroelectric dam. It is located in a mountainous area and when they built it they flooded several places. In that place there is a company that grows tilapia. These tilapia sometimes escape and grow wildly. people pay annual permits to fish and are only allowed to do it on weekends.
Because tilapia grow wild, it is normal to find tilapia more than 12 pounds.
It would be amazing to have you in Honduras catching those tilapia.

I enjoy and continue to follow your videos because: They are informational, personal and inherently Floridian. For your future flambé endeavors, a steel sautée pan can be easier to work with. Keep up the great work and God bless.

I told you they were good to eat, used to catch tons of them when I lived down there. The latinos cast net them out of the canals because they are legal to do being a non-native fish. Try them with butter and onion over white rice.
