    The first Death Wish film I saw was Death Wish 5, mostly because I was a fan of Charles Bronson who was quite popular here in Egypt, I enjoyed it for what it was and I even bought the DVD of the first film based on how much I enjoyed DW 5 but looking back, I enjoy the sequels that came after the first 2 films more.
    I think that's why I've grown to have a much bigger appreciation for the original Equalizer TV series with Edward Woodward, while it has the aesthetics of a vigilante media, the character is more of a private detective and even works within the law and he actually tries to go out of his way to avoid killing people and when he does, he's not happy about it. In fact, there are a number of episodes that are heavily critical of violence and vigilante justice as well as episodes that attacked racism and corrupt cops and politicians and even one episode that was in support of gun control (yes the episode does highlight the irony of that a character with ton of weapon in his secret room actually wishes gun control laws would be a thing, hoping that the next generation wouldn't make the same mistakes as his generation).

      @@harrisonE as for international actors, Egyptian audiences are fans of 80s action stars like Stallone, Schwarzeneggar, Bruce Willis as well as martial art films with people like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Cynthia Rothrock. Westerns like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne films are also popular. Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill films were big in the 90s and Bollywood films were HUGE in the region especially Amitabh Bachan films during the 90s.

    As an American who did grow up watching & loving these movies, I can confirm that we like them cause of the violence. The absurdity of the whole premise as well. A man suffers tremendous losses and goes a bit crazy and does wild shit. A thing myself & my friends say is the worst possible lot in life is to be a woman personally involved with Paul Kersey. Terrible things are gonna happen to them. Not to be overly critical but hearing you as a non-American talking about "the problem with america is...." type stuff can be somewhat grating. That being said I appreciate the time and effort you put into this very informative video. I randomly saw a reference to the Deathwish series & decided to look up some commentary on the movies. Glad I found this. Lastly great sense of humor man.

    Death Wish IV is AWESOME actually. I have to agree with the maker of this video. It is different from the other movies and yet has some badass scenes. BTW, for any film buff out there, the fight in the "oil field" ends with Bronson walking up to Perry Lopez's gangster and it is a clever reference to Once Upon A Time In The West. Frank (Henry Fonda) and Harmonica (Bronson) have this amazing drawn out gunfight set to some of Morricone's best music. When Bronson beats Frank at the gunfight, Frank is still asking "Who are you" and Harmonica puts....a harmonica in Frank's mouth as he dies. In this film Perry Lopez is also asking similar questions to Frank, but this time, Bronson pulls out a picture of Erica before offing the mob dude. Fucking brilliant IMO. But you would have to have watched Leone's masterwork to understand this scene. DW 5 is dogshit, I am sorry, but it is. Michael Parks was brilliant in Twin Peaks but sucks in DW 5. Bronson looks out of it...........Such an up and down series. Winner was a hack, but I don't think everything he did was bad. Just watch The Mechanic and Lawman (Burt Lancaster) to see him in good form. And Bronson could act VERY well with the right director. See him in The Dirty Dozen, Once Upon A Time In The West and Hard Times (Walter Hill's debut) to see that he was actually pretty good at times.

      I will say it's hard to mock the direction of a lot of these films when the main problems are the scripts. Winner and Bronson work well together mainly because Winner knows what he wants and Bronson knows how to give it to him. It'd be hard to fault both of them. I think even if you think the films are largely exploitative (like moi), it'd be hard to fault the direction.

    Death Wish 2 is not a good film or even barely a film? 😂 It's one of the best for sheer enjoyment, the best in the Cannon library and Jimmy Page's soundtrack is awesome. He really gets the feel of the film. The ending is one of the coolest of all time; coupled with the Page's music, you've got a bona fide hero. I don't know what you want from the Death Wish films. It's ridiculous over the top action with a hero we can root for. Oh, by the way, you mention Kersey doesn't look to bothered about his girlfriend leaving him. You failed to mention the line spoken "I'm sorry about Geri's leaving" and then a comment about him not answering his phone, showing that he IS upset. Did you not watch it or did you just cherry pick parts to try to make the film look bad and then make fun of it? If you're going to do a retrospective then at least be honest. There was no rape in David Engelbach's script at all.

    I didn't expect the social and political commentary at the end; felt heavy-handed but nonetheless somewhat accurate. I dislike the "white male" generalization argument, unless you're explicitly talking about US citizens. Also I found it odd that you criticized the villains for being misogynistic and racist.

    • @harrisonE
      @harrisonE  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I tried to sum things up at the end and I do think I may have rushed things a bit because of how long the video was. I tried to sprinkle a bit of commentary throughout the video - especially in the DW3 section but look, I will admit, I do make some generalisations, but I think they are largely focused on US folks. Also pretty sure if you rape people and treat women like shit, you're probably pretty misogynistic.

    • @drago939393
      @drago939393 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@harrisonE Of course, calling out the sleazy hack of a director a weirdo for his not-so-subtle fetish (at best) or genuine misogynist (at worst) is fine; as it is to note that the movies are definitely a product of their time, with women exclusively being feeble and weak plot devices aimed to be rescued and avenged. I'm just saying that it is odd to imply (if I understood you correctly) that "the misogyny and racism on display is unfortunate and unnecessary" when said misogyny and racism are exclusively committed by villains which are clearly portrayed to the audience as vile, reprehensible and to be undone.

    • @harrisonE
      @harrisonE  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@drago939393 That is definitely a very, very good point and I think attributing fictional misogyny and real misogyny should never be confused. You're definitely right there. I do however, think the latter influences the former and knowing what Michael Winner was like in real life and hearing actresses talk about their experiences in the documentary "Electric Boogaloo" (which I should have included) - it should have been noted that these actors portraying rape victims were not treated with any respect or decorum while filming. It was something I omitted and should have used as an example. The racism, however, I should have better examples of beyond what was shown in the film with a largely diverse cast portraying villains in the film.

  • @QuagmiresDooflab
    @QuagmiresDooflab ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know how you can criticise Michael Winner after this woefully ill thought out video. You've missed everything the Death Wish is about and is nit picking for the sake of it. Yes, people call their in laws mum and dad. You keep laughing at stuff that doesn't need laughing at or is even funny. This is not a good analysis of the Death Wish films. All you want to do is take the mick. You even said Roger Ebert was highly respected. No, he was a failed screenwriter that made money from talking rubbish and being hypocritical. For the record, if someone you love was raped and murdered in your house and the walls had been spray painted, I'm pretty sure YOU'D paint over it. The colour just happened to be "in" at the time. It's a 70's thing. This video has put me off watching anything else you've done. We get it: Garfield's last name is the same as the cartoon character. You don't need to keep showing it. It wasn't funny the first time. You could have taken so much out of this video and shortened it. It's just full of unnecessary footage that adds nothing.

    Man, I thought I was the only one when thinking of Michael Winners directing skills. Like everything else here, Winners directing is a product of the time. There's a bunch of 60s & 70s films that when it came to the directing felt like that format. From a whole bunch of guys. Some other Winner films are passable though, but most of the time you did feel he'd get disheartened with the product and just settle for "tat" lol.

    • @harrisonE
      @harrisonE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could not agree more. The weird thing about Winner is that he wasn't necessarily a bad director. He knew how to block a frame and shoot an action scene. The problem is with the Death Wish films is that almost all of the confrontations are one on one and not high octane chases or mexican standoffs - so he doesn't really know what to do with the camera other than lock it off and hope he gets the most intimidating take from Bronson.
