As someone from Northern NM, this channel stood out to me when I compared it to the many other mountain biking TH-cam channels. Great video! I appreciate that Nambe Pueblo was acknowledged when riding through their lands. I watch just about every other major mountain bike channel and land acknowledgement is something that is rare, at least in the TH-cam biking scene. I hope more people who enjoy the outdoors take the time to acknowledge the lands they are on. I would also like to acknowledge that Los Alamos is part of the San Ildefonso Pueblo and is Tiwa Territory. I encourage anyone who visits the area to consider the history and relationship of San Ildefonso and the Manhattan Project. Best of luck to @SYD and MACKY in their new home.
Yes, Los Alamos is on stolen land. Those who are enjoying the area need to understand what their native neighbors have lost. Just a btw.....the language of San Ildefonso and Santa Clara and Nambe is Tewa. Tiwa is the language of Taos, Picaris and a village to the south I can't remember now. The only remaining village speaking Towa is Jemez.
@@adamulibarri2622 Sorry, I wasn't meaning to point out a "mistake". I'm so appreciative that you were reminding people that this land isn't just about riding bikes as fast as you can, wherever you want. This is land which has belonged to others for centuries, land they treasure, land where there ancestors spirits still live. Knowing that and respecting that is more important than knowing the various languages. I heard that from you, and it raised my spirit. It saddens me that all so many people think of is "what can I do for fun and excitement", rather than "how can we build relationships". Thank you for bringing out that point!
Always loved your content. I'm commenting because I might be finally able to give some advice after all you've taught me! 1) When you're skinning, try not to lift the ski off the ground; glide instead. It's not a huge deal with Nordic skis, but when you have 5-10 lbs on each foot, you'll save a lot of energy. 2) I feel obliged to make sure you're up on your avalanche awareness 🙂 the resort should be a pretty safe place, but it's still really important to understand where is and isn't safe, especially if there's new snow and the resort is closed. Beacon, shovel, probe, and adequate training are essential if you leave the resort. Stay safe and thanks for all the great content!
TheCanasian gave two excellent tips. I have two regarding the poles: When climbing, use the strap. Go through the strap from below like you did in the video. If the straps are adjusted correctly, you be able to pull down on them using your hands and wrists without using your fingers. That will alleviate the need to squeeze the grips. It's remarkable how much your arms can assist the climbs when you don't have to squeeze the grips. When you ski down, the safest thing to do is not use the strap, especially when you venture off-piste. Alternatively, good backcountry ski poles will have straps that detach. With them, you can safely use the straps while skiing down.
Not often you have vids that go from skiing to riding in the desert and the conditions look absolutely mint for both activities. Really appreciate how down to earth you both are about your abilities, and vulnerabilities in your videos. Beautiful scenery in NM, looks like it will be a great place to live, grow and train. Thank you for continuing to share your journey!
I haven't been to NM since early 2000s. I went there for 3 weeks for a project and stayed 2.5 years! I remember heading to the carpark of some school in Los Alamos, and lying down on the hood of the car with a blanket and starting up at the Perseid meteor shower. I also learned to ski in Santa Fe. It's to this day one of the best places I have visited in USA.
Great ride. Really enjoyed it. I also love how yʻall bring awareness to land management and awareness, also the acknowledgement to the indigenous Nambe Pueblo people , By far your channel is my favorite TH-cam cycling channel. Much respect to you both, Syd and Mackey. I will be passing through NM later this summer looking forward to viewing the beautiful desert scenery.
I visited Los Alamos for work (high energy physics undergrad) 4 years ago, the drive down to Espanola got me every time. Didn't even know the area had great mtb trails, perhaps I'll make a trip down there soon. Congrats on choosing such a cool place and finding a house (iirc there was a housing issue there, at least in 2018)
Great skiing Syd. If you fall down and not get hurt too bad, only means that you have tried enough. And getting down the hill is always a good thing. 🤟🇫🇮❤️
Been enjoying the Sangres, Jemez, and San Juans for decades ( backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, fishing). Have made it to Los Alamos a few times. I don't think you could have picked a better spot. Congrats!
Oh I loved Peebles on my first visit to ride the 7 Stanes. But have since discovered Torridon, it’s off the scale spectacular and we’ve travelled worldwide!
Los felicito. He visto varios de sus documentales y me parecen maravillosos y muy instructivos. Ademas de los preciosos paisajes que he visto en sus videos como en Chile por ejemplo y este documental en Los Alamos. ¡Muchas GRACIAS! Syd y Macky. Un ABRAZO enorme para ambos. Son mi inspiración.
I believe the Four Corners region is the best location for mountain biking in the USA. So many different kinds of trails and riding within 4 hours distance.
Welcome! I’m about 45 minutes south of you, in Eldorado/Santa Fe. Great riding. Galisteo Basin is rideable year round, with some great trails. See ya on the trails!
Hey you two!! WELCOME to New Mexico! I am a native New Mexican who grew up in Las Vegas, NM. I currently reside in Albuquerque. Just reaching out as we have some amazing riding in the state, which I know you two are discovering. I am a long time cyclist, started riding in the very late 70's...done the whole gamit of riding...even got into MTB early on in the mid 80's. Hope that perhaps our paths cross at some event. I have loosely followed you all through the Syd Fixes Bikes channel you had, I loved the content as being a 15 year bike shop veteran the content sometimes made me laugh and even cringe at times. Please enjoy NM, there are lots of outdoor and cycling enthusiasts in LA...including a guy who is a former national TT champion.
Spent 2 nights in Los Alamos last year. Camped in the parking lot of the Bathtub Row Brewing company. Loved waking up to deer in the dog park!! Great town, great people and fantastic beer!! My favourite ice breaker in the bar…”what, are you a rocket scientist or something?”
Great video! Thank you for continuing to bring awareness and appreciation to the region, its peoples, and the amazing outdoor activities available to the public. Sharing the MTB love 🤙🏽
good job with the skiing guys. wait until you discover "skimo racing"....my skimo races are typically 2hrs long, climb 5k of vert, and your avg. heart rate will be 90% of max. you will love it !!
Just goes to show there are little pieces of paradise all over the place. Just look at you hobbies and passions and there are places you can live a play affordably.
Met you guys at Iceman, really cool to meetcha. It was so nice to ride the trainer along side you in the desert. What a cool trail. Thanks for the content. Mahalo
Looks awesome! It reminds me of some places I lived in Arizona where we would ride the desert and the foothills during colder months and head into the mountains for the hotter months. Usually a 30-60 minute drive. Enjoy your new home!
As a former Ohio Buckeye, born and raised, snow skiing wasn't a regular thing. It ended up that I was pretty decent because I could water ski very well. I bought the whole package to ski at Perfect North in Lawrence, Indiana. I tried to get my wife when we were dating to ski, but she hated it and the cold...lol. I haven't skied in over 27 yrs, so I would probably be horrible. Looks like you both picked the perfect place for training year round.
A family story is my mother was one of the first civilians to enter LA after WWII. She was the secretary for a construction company that was brought in to build family housing.
Good video, ive really enjoyed your videos, even more since you bought your house! That looked like a awsome trail you guys rode, and the climbs looked really steep even with the go pro effect!
Yeah, I already knew you guys were gonna have some fun moving to Los Alamos. :) Probably the only type of trail they're missing in LA is something a little flowier (the closest is parts of non-tech perimeter or bridges). There's a good mix of tech and chunk in town with a few XC trails. Plus you have Pajarito at your back door, AF within 2 hours, little over a hour to Glorieta or Winsor (Raven's Ridge / REM too). I'm gonna give White / Red Mesa a try for some winter riding. My wife has been wanting to try out the badlands this winter too. :) FWIW, all of the LA trails down in the canyons will dry out much later than those on some of the tops of mesas (i.e. Qwage), so some stuff will definitely be rideable in March if it's been warm. You can also ride some of the White Rock trails in the colder months too.
I keep rewatching your video since the trails up in Los Alamos aren't so great right now. Well Bayo wasn't bad yesterday...on the sunny side. Anyway, great video!
You have probably fingured it out already, but if it is steep and loose, its easier to go in a criss cross pattern. Yes you will walk longer, but less of an inclination.
I can attest to your home choice. I visited Los Alamos and while I didn't have a chance to ride the beauty of the area is undeniable. (Actually, your short list of possible places reads like a vacay bucket list.) And the ride footage is super sharp 👍🏻
I love desert riding, my favorite. Living in Kansas I have a bit of a drive to find the desert, but hopefully the next move will be in that direction. That looks like an awesome place.
Looks beautiful there. It’s nice being able to drive to and from the snow. Being just down the hill from Tahoe it’s similar where I live but I drive to the snow instead of out of it.
Lost Almost had super trails in the early nineties and then there were the fires--many trails were closed. I guess they are finally restored and things are better than ever. Back then we were bombing down Quemazon on 2 inch travel elastomer hardtails when they were available. Good Eats was the place to eat or Blue Window. I think Blue Window is still around.
Nice to see you two on skis! Looking forward to hopefully see more of it this winter. You should really look in tech bindings though: they're a lot lighter and more ergonomic. Also, Macky would be great at skimo racing. 😝 Good luck Syd! I managed to learn skiing in the backcountry as an adult, so I'm sure you'll rock it. It just takes a lot of time and falling.
Nice! Try not lifting your skis off the ground when you skin, instead try keeping them on the ground and sliding forward. Keeping constant contact with the snow will help you be more efficient and also aid in traction on steeper terrain. Also, when going up steep grades try and look up at where you are going, so head up, looking down puts your weight forward and can make climbing harder. You guys switched places on the intro. I guess, a new intro was needed since getting the house. Congrats again on the house.

Nice to see you two on skis! Looking forward to hopefully see more of it this winter.

We just moved to Appalachia, as cool as this looks to visit, idk if I'd want to live in the desert.
