Music Reaction 233: Sunmi- Stranger

So I went from "24 Hours" all the way to "Stranger", and I have to say that Sunmi has only improved over time. Sunmi is very adept at expression. She is quite versatile in the use of expression in this song. It is a kind of "Frankenstein song" in that it consists of many different styles deliberately joined together. It is not quite so intuitive at first, but upon listening to the song, there is some very clever composition and song structure being used. The very intentionally abrupt opening of the song brings you into an ambiguous space. But the sequence of varying grooves that unfolds starts to define itself through rhythm and harmony. The chorus is very contemporary in its trap inspired minimalist form. The verse is much more 80s pop themed and it leads into a strong reggae pre-chorus section. The use of rhythm is just as important as melody and the final payoff occurs when moving from the bridge to the final chorus. It turns a very abrupt transition into a completely smooth one and also sets up a big climactic finale for the song. This was very cool and very clever!
