My dad was stationed in Bad Hersfeld in the early 80's, during the height of the cold war. He was a Lieutenant, fresh out of WestPoint and was Air Defense Artillery, though I don't remember which unit. It was an extremely tense time. His new wife (later to be my mother), moved there with him and because they were married, were able to live in a house on the economy, instead of in the barracks. He's got some really interesting stories from his time there, including driving through east Germany into the American sector in west Berlin. We took a trip as a family to Germany in the mid 2000's, and one one of the places we went was Bad Hersfeld, so he could show my sister and I were they lived and where he worked. To include his old Tac Site, which is almost unrecognizable today, as it has been overgrown by nature. He hadn't spoke German since the 80's, and though he was rusty, within what seemed like days, he picked it back up again. We visited old friends of theirs that they had not seen in 30+ years. It was very cool.

While the whole experience of returning was pretty surreal for me, one of the highlights was definitely finding out that the same family still owns the Scnell Imbiß in front of the old post. 3-11 ACR, Bad Hersfeld...brings back memories as an Army Brat in 1979 ...great times! Used to take the side gate from the military housing when open, hated the steep walk. Pommes frites mit mayo bitte! Thanks

Great video! I was stationed in Muenster by Dieburg. 6th Mp company. We totally ate off base at a guesthouse or ordered from an Italian place that delivered. I can count on my fingers the number of times I ate at the mess hall. I envy you returning to your old base. I hope to do that some day too. Prost!

Awesome that you made a trip to visit the city that led to your springboard out of the US. I bet it brought back a lot of memories. That's crazy that the buildings that were barracks still look the same and you were able to spot the room you stayed in. Looks like they had a really nice Christmas market as well.

I still have some Joe dollars from MP's or Music Paradise... We would get a bucket at the "Green Goose" and then hit "sammy night"(Sandwich) at Big Ben's... I was there from September 89' to November 91'. Thanks for the memories Chris and better half... Prost guys.
Hey Chris I was there the same time you were, was probably one of the last 30 or so to leave, ended up at Ayers kaserne the Rock for a year, preferred Bad Hersfeld much better, thanks for the memories great video

They bribed me by saying I could stay in Germany if I volunteered to stay until the last, I did...then they sent me to Texas 🤣🤣 It was so cool going back, I think the highlight was probably the guy at the Imbiss, that was a surreal encounter. So many great memories and still just an amazing little town. Really happy you enjoyed the video. We started vlogging a few years ago, bean traveling non-stop since we retired. Loving it!
Ahhhhhh 3/2 ACR, Pond Barracks in Amberg for me. Same type of barracks you had, also now residential buildings. I loved going into the the town of Amberg and just explore, such a beautiful place. Lots of good memories. Maybe a little more then 30 years for me.
Saw a picture of them taken during the Vietnam war era. They looked exactly the same inside as they did when we were there aside from color of the paint 🤣🤣
