    For the first time yesterday my dog took off after a squirrel (fenced in yard) and when I blew my antler whistle he turned mid chase and came back to me and he was rewarded with boiled chicken breast. Both of us were extremely happy. Squirrels were the biggest obstacle to over come and I hope the next time he will remember this time.

    Hi Will, Ive used your methods since getting my pitbull rescue, we passed the adult training (in order to get into Canine Good Citizen) and he was top of his class, with the fastest recall! I was so proud!

    To make it more fun for myself i got a rubber stick weighted such that it carries Like a throwing knife, i practice on trees and my gsd brings it back after a "wait" command occasionally, recall never worked with blaidd, but the "wait" command he just automatically fallows which works absolutely fine.

    Literally headed out in just a few minutes to pick up a 50 ft lead for our working cocker rescue we adopted last week (we were instructed to keep her home for the first two weeks while she decompressed and adjusted- not sure how on Earth a dog like this is supposed to decompress with so little exercise 😳). Recall practice is definitely in our future lol! Still in the decompression phase, so maybe that's why she doesn't seem exceptionally motivated by much. Her foster mom said she's primarily driven by attention, so I guess that would necessitate a relationship to increase its value? Either way, thank you for the priceless videos! I've been watching and studying for months in advance in preparation for finding our furever friend 🥰

      I have no experience with rescue dogs, so don't know if I'm correct, but wouldn't The Walk bond you and the dog? Was the rescue place talking about not going to a leash free park or busy, loud place?
      Personally I'd work out a plan over several weeks... I wouldn't walk the streets with other dogs around but I would go somewhere open and spacious and walk together on leash. Then I'd walk around the streets to get to know your local area and where "home" is, but avoid other dogs by crossing streets. Then I'd politely ask other dog owners if we can meet. Then go to the outside of a dog park and walk along the outside so the fence was a barrier. After that, I'd confidently go inside the dog park and meet other dogs.
      This was what I did with my pups and they're not scared or intimated by any dogs and love the dog park every day.

    I feel the only way I'll get my Jack Russel to recall instead of chasing a squirrel is if I have 2 squirrels in my hand 😂

    I adore your videos and your message, but in some of the recent videos like this one it's really difficult to hear and focus on you because of the distracting music. Any chance you can have your editor tone it down a little? I've had to start watching on mute with captions on in order to be able to process your words properly, and I miss getting to hear your inflections.

    My springer had brilliant recall - would stop whatever he was doing and come back, no matter where he was. My cocker is a nightmare once he gets into bird-tracking mode. You literally have to touch him to get his focus again. It means I can't let him off the lead anywhere except our closed garden which is disappointing. He's food motivated except when he has a scent - he'll literally spit it out and it doesn't matter how valuable a treat it is.

    i dont know if you have made a video about this but i would like to ask if you know dog breeds that do very well alone since i work long hours and therefor dont have a dog because i don't feel like i can provide the companionship it deserves but are there breeds that do well enough alone that maybe it could be possible without being a determent to the dog?. we are talking 10-11 hours. and i really love dogs which is also why i don't have one since i'm not sure i can provide the companionship it deserves.

    Do you have any tips on keeping a small dog safe during a walk? I have a 2 pound puppy and he's so tiny I can't see him when he's walking next to me. I literally have to move my elbows out of my line of sight to see if he's on my right or on my left. I'm in constant fear of stepping on him.

    • @mathiagerner1002
      @mathiagerner1002 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are working guard dogs (as you presumably now), so they can easily become hostile, protective and territorial especially if left in fenced areas. They would need to be extremely socialized to not develop those traits towards other humans and dogs.

    • @soltaddei457
      @soltaddei457 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I would just start with putting the leash next to him and reward everything positive like sniffing it and staying quit, he will eventually understand that good things happen whenever the leash appears! Then you can go step by step and see if he wants to voluntarily put the leash on like a game, lot of treats and praises of course 😊 good luck with your puppy !

    See, my dog will come to me when i call her unless she is scared or has a toy.
    I have to figure out how to get her to come if she is scared. This could be life saving.
    Id like her to come and give me her toy too, she loves fetch, but wont bring it back to me..she likes to play, "try to catch me" when playing. Id like her to being it back to me so i can toss it again.

      @@nigelparrish672right, so leave the dog to get depressed in a shelter.
      Sometimes things happen man. If you can't look after them then yes they should be rehomed, but poor people can look after dogs well too. I don't think anyone should go looking for a dog they can't afford but you don't just get rid of the dog if you can't afford it in hard times, you wouldn't do it with a child.

    Training in short bursts of 5 to 10 minutes will be good.
    It mentally stimulates the dog but will also Tire them.
    Spaniels are very very energetic and need a lot of time and input but they do make a great family dog as they are playful affectionate and social. Down side is when bored their mischievous side kicks in. They need to be brushed after a walk and paws checked for thorns, grit.
    They need to be groomed every 3 months.
    Around children they need to be monitored that they don't get over excited.
    They need to be fed same time every day so they can self regulate.
    There training needs to be physical and mental. They love games and challenges.
    They need off lead exercise in a secure area and time to have a good sniff and explore.
    They are super intelligent and learn very quickly so it's important to be consistent otherwise they get confused and disinterested.
