Thats what I thought the 90s-00s were wild times both Ford and Dodge putting v10s. I can't believe the v10 was just discontinued it was a workhorse of a motor.
Personally, big diesels have their places in industrial applications but I loved that Ford v10 I love big displacement gassers and small displacement diesels just a unique sounds.
I used to ride a Gillig Coach with a 6-71 Detroit. That was around when they started to disappear, so the driver had to short shift in residential neighborhoods to avoid noise complaints. On the main road, he opened it up and I though the bus was a Supra.
Where I live we have the 2006 Urbino 18. Whenever I get to catch the bus and an 18 shows up, I always sit in the back and listen. What a sound, both the turbo and the engine!
I rode on one of these LPG bluebird busses for a number of my high school years. I often wondered what the engine was, I never knew they had a V10 though. The particular bus I rode on was a lemon, it broke down constantly! lol
Makes sense, what with the *yellow paint.* Apart from that, that's probably the reason why school bus companies across the United States should use a *turbo-diesel engine (preferably a V8)* instead of their *gas-powered equivalents,* what with their *immense curb weight.*
I work for a transportation company, 267 buses in our fleet. Mostly are international CE 200 conventionals with Cummins 6.7L ISB engines, some C2 Thomas's ( hate those!) We do have 20 of those (2014 models, all between 50-100k on miles. Which came from a sister location) Blue Bird Vision buses all with 6.8L V10 Ford engines with the Roush propane systems. They seem to run good,decent power. There quiet, warm up faster but only get about 4 miles to the gallon. Don't require DEF and don't have to Regen which is good. They do have large fuel tanks 86 gallon, compared to the 60 gallon in the international's. Which get between 6-8 miles per gallon. We started using the those BB's for local routes and so far so good on the reliably. Mostly some minor problems had occurred. Time will tell..

Cam-phasers that easily failed--and were expensive to get factory replacements for... with inferior, "inexpensive" replacements offered in the aftermarket, spark plugs that lacked sufficient threads to keep them from blowing out, and an oil that barely provided enough to keep the cam phasers happy/alive! Not to mention the odd intake manifold gasket sealing issues that would arise. And all for what? An option to those not comfortable with diesels?! To make a replacement for the venerable, reliable 385-series 460-ci./7.5L V-8!? The V-10 was never that powerful in compared to it's diesel V-8 stablemate, in the area that mattered most (torque production) and was a total fuel hog to boot! Fact that Ford never developed a twin-cam 4-valve version--as done with the other engines of the same family--it shows even they didn't take it seriously performance-wise, and often many of them were swapped-out for a Cummins 6BT conversion by their owners as a result. :\

In Venezuela we have a popular Coachbuilder named ENCAVA, they built a urban model with the reliable Isuzu 6 cilinder lineal engine 6HH1-S, 192 hp. Allison transmission, the sound the engine is very cool, and a fast bus. Best regards from Venezuela!
As a kid growing up in the 90's, all our school buses were flat nosed, front engined Blue Birds. All of them had diesel engines of some sort, some of the newer ones in the late 90's/early 00's had that 5.9 Cummins diesel engine in them, it had a distinct sound and were REALLY FREAKING LOUD compared to some of the other buses. Also the old backup buses we occasionally rode in were from the 70's/80's, they had smelly ass gas big block V8's with manual transmissions which our bus driver hated, she was always grinding gears lol.
USA: "We use a huge V10 Gasoline engine in our busses, and they get the worlds worst fuel mileage!" Japan: "Hold my beer...." Seriously, a B13 in a BUS? What kind of MPG was that, about 3 to the gallon?? *walks of ranting*

Can't have hot rod school buses.. lol The 6.7 ISB's we have in our fleets are very nuetured...220 hp Smaller turbos,injectors and ECM calibrations, tier 4 emissions with the alphabet of components, DOC, DPF, DEF and the SCR. Considering the power potential of those engines it's really an insult to the manufacturers! We had a fleet (14 buses, which were recently retired) that were '04 Thomas transits with 3126, C7 Cats which had the tier 2 ( HEUI systems) emissions which were detuned from 330 hp down to 190hp. I'm sure the drivers would love more power, but the feds control the numbers and that is a real shame!!
@@michaelmurphy6869 What about up to *475 horsepower* and *1,050 ft-lbs. of torque, bone stock,* in some PowerStroke-powered buses *_(if_* they ever decide to start using them)? Besides, those things must weigh upwards of at least *12.5 tons (25,000 lbs. / 11,451 kg.)!*
I grew up on these Ikarus buses in Poland. The unique sound of the Raba engine is engrained in my head for the rest of my life. Loved your video. I was waiting for this.

In my opinion, the best sounding bus engine is the one I grew up hearing the most: Caterpillar 3126. First bus I ever rode was a Blue Bird GMC CV200 which had it. In my later years of elementary school, we had a Thomas Freightliner FS65 sub bus with that engine plus a (rarely-optioned) 5-speed manual transmission
Take a look at the "GM new look" buses, most of the time they had the "small" Detroit-Diesel 6-71. They were noisy, had no A/C, windows had a hard time being completely shut (wind whistling was present at highway speeds), but the heating was ok, as long as you had a thick coat in winter, or if you were sitting on the engine on the middle of the back seat. They were built like a tank though.
My favourite sound is the 5.9 and 6.7 cummins found in 70% indian buses. Many of them have been replaced by 4cyl 3.3l engines. Some still continue to use the 6.7 and they are just so loud and amazing to hear. You can always tell a 6.7 is coming from 1km away😂
Great video! Im shamed to not being born in Amerika! School bus powered by a V10 gas engine. When i was in elementary school, once a week was swimming teaching, a IKARUS 211 get us there, with its IFA 4 cylinder crap of an engine. Wher we gone for some tour with the it was usually with a IKARUS 256 coach, with its loud, planetery geared rear axle. Good times, but here i am driving Ikarus 280 GVM trolleybuses :D
Those laid down engines were pretty neat, would be interesting to see how different the oil system is compared to a upright engine. Yet another great video, I think I’m becoming a bus enthusiast as well.
In some yes, in others no. Volvo made two versions depending on where the engine was being placed. Under the floor of a bus/coach in the "mid" position, between the drive and steering axle it had a dry sump, with scavenging pumps and a tank. You check the oil level on this with the engine running. There is another version with wet sump that sits in the rear bay, which is essentially the same the same block, but upright. This version obviously omits the H from the model number.
The diesel powered 80's VW Vanagon had a Rabbit inline 4 laid down. I've seen Diahatsu 3 cylinder engines laid down on a smaller electrical generator. These had a slight " head higher than oil pan to prevent the cylinders from being submerged in oil. I've also seen a VW inline 6 that was stood on end that powered a back up generator used in a small server farm.
I think one of those Triton powered Blue Birds is what took me to high school every day! I always thought it was just a weird sounding v8 but I guess not!
I'm glad you included the Gardner, one of my favourite sounding diesel engines ever. A lot of Bristol VRs (UK Double decker) used them and they were a lovely gruff sounding engine which sounded as if it could pull a tank.
I remember back in my high school years there were a few International DT series buses with the manual Diesel V8, they were a lot better sounding than the inline 6's on those. If you ever do a 3rd part, check out the International 7.3 V8's
I remember thinking Cool, this bus sounds like a diesel Corvette! The driver was an old guy who obviously loved the sound of that stick shift V8 combo.
I learned today that some Blue Bird contracted busses had V10 engines. Since you can find used Blue Bird busses for a few grand, finding a V10 Ford is going to be rare, but golden once restored.
The best sounding bus I rode was 1998 International Thomas school bus with a DT466E and a spicer 6+1 (7 speed) manual transmission. Driver had been driving it since brand new and he started driving in 1998 too, only bus he drove beside subs when it was in the shop.
I drove a V10 powered F550 at my last job. It was a 15’ stake bed. I wanted to buy it because it only had like 30k miles. It had plenty of power, sounded nice, but only got 6.5 mpg average when I would drive it. I still loved that engine. Would’ve been better coupled with the ZF6 transmission instead of the automatic.
The best sounding engines i remember having in Germany are the om447hLa in a O405 GN with a slightly broken exhaust, the v8 in the setra s213 h and the man d20 found in the lion citys as they have a ridiculous loud turbo

This upload brings back a lot of memories from when I used to regularly travel by Coach in 🇬🇧 National Express had a fleet of vehicles; some dating back to the late 1960's that used to top out in excess of 90mph..... Even the later 1970's were able to hit 80mph on a pnuemo cyclic type of transmission before the 'speed restriction' units became a thing, so to speak. Loving the content VR 👍
My experience with bus engines (ridden, driven, worked on, and owned) is long. GMC 302 inline 6, 305, 351, 478 V6's, and Olds 370 V8. International RD 406, small V345 and V392, DTA360, DT466E and the V365 diesel V8. Superior ambulance/bus with DH478 Toro Flow and Cummins triple nickel V555. MCI 6V92 Detroit, Detroit 50 series and Detroit 60 series diesels. I'm sure I'm forgetting some too.
Hi there ! There were lot of motorhomes with the V10 Ford Triton engine too !! No detroit or cummins, cat or even scania in your bus selection, maybe the next one ! :) my 88 motorhome (built on a Crown bus chassis) has a 3208 aftercooled turbo in it, it's sound really nice too ! thank you for all your video, keep up the good work ! Yes caterpillar, detroit and Cummins have all Ben used in motorhomes. Many of the Prevost chassis, Newell and Bluebird used detroit, Bluebird and many others did use caterpillar. Cummins is the most common engine used in diesel pusher motor homes today.
When I was a kid, one of the towns mechanics drove our school bus. Gas powered Chevy. Slow but probably reliable as hell. Maybe 454, or bigger? Could it have been a 502? I dunno. Maybe cover it Visio. Also maybe a history lesson of the first pick-ups to have diesel engines. I think most of the ones in the U.S. were gas converted to diesel by GM. Could be wrong.
It maybe possibly also could’ve been the 366 V8, I know GM used it a lot in a lot of older buses with the Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC TopKick chassis until like 2002 before moving to using the 8.1L Vortec 496ci V8 until like 2009 or so on the later models of the TopKick and Kodiak trucks, alongside the 6.6L Duramax Diesel as an option from 2003-2009, and the Caterpillar 3116 or 3126 until the year of 2002
The engine you're thinking of is the 350 Olds diesel that came out in 1978 in half-ton pickups. People jumped on it immediately thinking that diesel meant durable and reliable. They found out differently. It wasn't until 1982 when the Chevrolet-engineered clean-sheet 6.2 came out that there was a true diesel designed for light-duty trucks.
VR: consider a vid featuring buses but ones with front engines and ones with rear engines. Cat, Mercedes, IH all made various engines and some made buses too. I believe it would add to your stable of videos very nicely. Cheers.
I've ridden in a Blue Bird school bus for a couple of years, and the ones in specific had the 6.7 liter Cummins turbocharged diesel straight 6, it was a 2018 model. I do want to drive or at least ride in one with a Triton V-10 someday.
Maybe a video on those old W123 Body Mercedes benz engines? they were bombproof and my late dad worked on them so often i grew up around those old things, my dads 240D still runs to this day, despite that huge texas snowstorm it started right up!
I'm a little late but thanks for these. I'll have to get together some of my videos and photos of our fashion bus we had. Including it's demise. I know it wouldn't make the list but I think I have a video of a start up I did for a marketing bit. It was a 32 foot aeroelite 28 passenger ADA or handicap bus with a Navistar chassis. Vt385 with a 5spd auto.
Those V10 tritons were used in alot of RV's . Also F-250 and F-350 . My friend had a f350 dually with a v10 and a manual transmission. Having to Get out and manually lock the front hubs when you got stuck was the only pain with it .
I've driven various Vision models since the earliest Cat 6 cyl models and really enjoy the power and flexibility of the Gasoline Roush V 10 only wishing for better transmission shift programming . That 71 passenger bus can leave many cars behind off the line up to about 45 MPH and leaves the gas IH buses in the dust . However my favorite BlueBird is the older All American and Wonder Lodge that came with the Cat 3208 non turbo with the low restriction exhaust . Deep bass staccato sound off idle where you could almost hear every cylinder fire . Brake torque the automatic equipped and you could drown out any loud sound system kids put in their cars . I drove one with a broken governor and it was cruising at 85 with the needle pegged to the underside of 0 on the tach . In 90 they switched to turbo cummins to get another a mile per gallon but just didn't have the power off the line or on the highway .
Surprised Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines didn't make it into yet another video. Crown Supercoaches powered by these were a common sight (and sound) in southern California all the way into the late 1990s. They were slow, loud, hot, stinky, and they were the only buses that still had a manual transmission at this point, so nobody knew how to drive them without missing gears so badly they had to go back into the previous gear half the time and start over. If your regular bus broke down or your driver called in sick, there was a good chance you were going to have to ride in one of these and make it home 40 minutes late with (hopefully) temporary hearing loss.
I love the triton V10 2 valve in my '03 F-250. I have towed my 8500lbs travel trailer with both my V10 and my sister's ram 2500 with the 6.4l V8. The V10 is way better at applying low end torque and far quieter than the V8. The V8 had to run out the revs to get the same performance. The higher hp of the V8 did make for a better highway experience. Fuel performance was dead even at 8.33mpg.
Uh... I'm sure the *Ford 6.8L Triton V10* from *2003* is *a LOT louder* than the comparable newer *6.4L HEMI V8* in the newer-model *Dodge Ram Heavy Duties (2500 and up).*
@@josecarrilloii4036 maybe a 3v triton. Granted my 2v exhaust is not stock. I have Gibson headers and a hush thrush muffler. But even straight piped it's not as pervasive as the 6.4l. This is my opinion also. I have nothing against the 6.4l and I might be purchasing one next year. It's just in my opinion it seems far more aggressive and droney. It really annoyed my after a couple hours in the highway.

I've driven the triton v10 in a k-loader at an air ramp (loading cargo planes), and it sounds the best out of any k-loader engine including ford v12s.

My personal favorite is the 9.0 L International V8 diesel from the mid 1980s. Those school buses sounded great!

Great video! Im shamed to not being born in Amerika! School bus powered by a V10 gas engine. When i was in elementary school, once a week was swimming teaching, a IKARUS 211 get us there, with its IFA 4 cylinder crap of an engine. Wher we gone for some tour with the it was usually with a IKARUS 256 coach, with its loud, planetery geared rear axle. Good times, but here i am driving Ikarus 280 GVM trolleybuses :D
Something also worth noting is that the New Flyer GE40LF/R also had the same Triton V10 as the Blue Bird Vision albeit in a series hybrid setup.
Those laid down engines were pretty neat, would be interesting to see how different the oil system is compared to a upright engine. Yet another great video, I think I’m becoming a bus enthusiast as well.
In some yes, in others no. Volvo made two versions depending on where the engine was being placed. Under the floor of a bus/coach in the "mid" position, between the drive and steering axle it had a dry sump, with scavenging pumps and a tank. You check the oil level on this with the engine running. There is another version with wet sump that sits in the rear bay, which is essentially the same the same block, but upright. This version obviously omits the H from the model number.
Seeing one in a cab-over semi would be REALLY something...! ;)

The diesel powered 80's VW Vanagon had a Rabbit inline 4 laid down. I've seen Diahatsu 3 cylinder engines laid down on a smaller electrical generator. These had a slight " head higher than oil pan to prevent the cylinders from being submerged in oil.
I've also seen a VW inline 6 that was stood on end that powered a back up generator used in a small server farm.
Can you do a most finely engineered/smoothest engines (all types of vehicles) :)

I'm glad you included the Gardner, one of my favourite sounding diesel engines ever. A lot of Bristol VRs (UK Double decker) used them and they were a lovely gruff sounding engine which sounded as if it could pull a tank.

I remember back in my high school years there were a few International DT series buses with the manual Diesel V8, they were a lot better sounding than the inline 6's on those.
If you ever do a 3rd part, check out the International 7.3 V8's
Seconded, and may I recommend also the 6.9L IDI? It has a very unique sound, and was also available in the F series.

I learned today that some Blue Bird contracted busses had V10 engines. Since you can find used Blue Bird busses for a few grand, finding a V10 Ford is going to be rare, but golden once restored.
The best sounding bus I rode was 1998 International Thomas school bus with a DT466E and a spicer 6+1 (7 speed) manual transmission. Driver had been driving it since brand new and he started driving in 1998 too, only bus he drove beside subs when it was in the shop.
I miss the sound a gardner 6lxb, you always used to hear thek before bus companies rid of them for the enviro series
I drove a V10 powered F550 at my last job. It was a 15’ stake bed. I wanted to buy it because it only had like 30k miles. It had plenty of power, sounded nice, but only got 6.5 mpg average when I would drive it. I still loved that engine. Would’ve been better coupled with the ZF6 transmission instead of the automatic.

The best sounding engines i remember having in Germany are the om447hLa in a O405 GN with a slightly broken exhaust, the v8 in the setra s213 h and the man d20 found in the lion citys as they have a ridiculous loud turbo

National Express had a fleet of vehicles; some dating back to the late 1960's that used to top out in excess of 90mph.....
Even the later 1970's were able to hit 80mph on a pnuemo cyclic type of transmission before the 'speed restriction' units became a thing, so to speak.

My experience with bus engines (ridden, driven, worked on, and owned) is long. GMC 302 inline 6, 305, 351, 478 V6's, and Olds 370 V8. International RD 406, small V345 and V392, DTA360, DT466E and the V365 diesel V8. Superior ambulance/bus with DH478 Toro Flow and Cummins triple nickel V555. MCI 6V92 Detroit, Detroit 50 series and Detroit 60 series diesels. I'm sure I'm forgetting some too.

Hi there ! There were lot of motorhomes with the V10 Ford Triton engine too !! No detroit or cummins, cat or even scania in your bus selection, maybe the next one ! :) my 88 motorhome (built on a Crown bus chassis) has a 3208 aftercooled turbo in it, it's sound really nice too ! thank you for all your video, keep up the good work ! Yes caterpillar, detroit and Cummins have all Ben used in motorhomes. Many of the Prevost chassis, Newell and Bluebird used detroit, Bluebird and many others did use caterpillar. Cummins is the most common engine used in diesel pusher motor homes today.

When I was a kid, one of the towns mechanics drove our school bus. Gas powered Chevy. Slow but probably reliable as hell. Maybe 454, or bigger? Could it have been a 502? I dunno. Maybe cover it Visio. Also maybe a history lesson of the first pick-ups to have diesel engines. I think most of the ones in the U.S. were gas converted to diesel by GM. Could be wrong.
It maybe possibly also could’ve been the 366 V8, I know GM used it a lot in a lot of older buses with the Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC TopKick chassis until like 2002 before moving to using the 8.1L Vortec 496ci V8 until like 2009 or so on the later models of the TopKick and Kodiak trucks, alongside the 6.6L Duramax Diesel as an option from 2003-2009, and the Caterpillar 3116 or 3126 until the year of 2002
The engine you're thinking of is the 350 Olds diesel that came out in 1978 in half-ton pickups. People jumped on it immediately thinking that diesel meant durable and reliable. They found out differently. It wasn't until 1982 when the Chevrolet-engineered clean-sheet 6.2 came out that there was a true diesel designed for light-duty trucks.

VR: consider a vid featuring buses but ones with front engines and ones with rear engines. Cat, Mercedes, IH all made various engines and some made buses too. I believe it would add to your stable of videos very nicely. Cheers.
I've ridden in a Blue Bird school bus for a couple of years, and the ones in specific had the 6.7 liter Cummins turbocharged diesel straight 6, it was a 2018 model. I do want to drive or at least ride in one with a Triton V-10 someday.

Maybe a video on those old W123 Body Mercedes benz engines? they were bombproof and my late dad worked on them so often i grew up around those old things, my dads 240D still runs to this day, despite that huge texas snowstorm it started right up!
Also Mielec engines like SW680 (Leyland license) or SWT/300/1 (modified SW680 with turbo)] sound great, they were used in Jelcz buses

I know it wouldn't make the list but I think I have a video of a start up I did for a marketing bit. It was a 32 foot aeroelite 28 passenger ADA or handicap bus with a Navistar chassis. Vt385 with a 5spd auto.
Those V10 tritons were used in alot of RV's . Also F-250 and F-350 . My friend had a f350 dually with a v10 and a manual transmission. Having to Get out and manually lock the front hubs when you got stuck was the only pain with it .
I've driven various Vision models since the earliest Cat 6 cyl models and really enjoy the power and flexibility of the Gasoline Roush V 10 only wishing for better transmission shift programming . That 71 passenger bus can leave many cars behind off the line up to about 45 MPH and leaves the gas IH buses in the dust . However my favorite BlueBird is the older All American and Wonder Lodge that came with the Cat 3208 non turbo with the low restriction exhaust . Deep bass staccato sound off idle where you could almost hear every cylinder fire . Brake torque the automatic equipped and you could drown out any loud sound system kids put in their cars . I drove one with a broken governor and it was cruising at 85 with the needle pegged to the underside of 0 on the tach . In 90 they switched to turbo cummins to get another a mile per gallon but just didn't have the power off the line or on the highway .
Imagine the muffler falling off your V10 bus. You'd think you were getting picked up by a Viper.
If you make a third part, make sure to include the Scania DSC9, the predecessor to the DC9

Surprised Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines didn't make it into yet another video. Crown Supercoaches powered by these were a common sight (and sound) in southern California all the way into the late 1990s. They were slow, loud, hot, stinky, and they were the only buses that still had a manual transmission at this point, so nobody knew how to drive them without missing gears so badly they had to go back into the previous gear half the time and start over. If your regular bus broke down or your driver called in sick, there was a good chance you were going to have to ride in one of these and make it home 40 minutes late with (hopefully) temporary hearing loss.

You missed the DAF DB250. A 14l i6 turbo that sounds INSANE.
I love the triton V10 2 valve in my '03 F-250. I have towed my 8500lbs travel trailer with both my V10 and my sister's ram 2500 with the 6.4l V8. The V10 is way better at applying low end torque and far quieter than the V8. The V8 had to run out the revs to get the same performance. The higher hp of the V8 did make for a better highway experience. Fuel performance was dead even at 8.33mpg.
Uh... I'm sure the *Ford 6.8L Triton V10* from *2003* is *a LOT louder* than the comparable newer *6.4L HEMI V8* in the newer-model *Dodge Ram Heavy Duties (2500 and up).*
@@josecarrilloii4036 maybe a 3v triton. Granted my 2v exhaust is not stock. I have Gibson headers and a hush thrush muffler. But even straight piped it's not as pervasive as the 6.4l. This is my opinion also. I have nothing against the 6.4l and I might be purchasing one next year. It's just in my opinion it seems far more aggressive and droney. It really annoyed my after a couple hours in the highway.
