Largest 5 cyl diesel I've ever seen, larger in swept capacity even than the Mirlees or Fairbanks, was the Burmeister & Wain (now MAN) engine fitted to the old HMS Endurance.
5cyl, 2 stroke, two electrically assisted turbos, a swept volume of around 1600 litres, 3220bhp, 104rpm max.
The pistons were large enough for a skinny 19yr old to sit atop during maintenance periods

4:16 This is one of the Euro 3 9-litre 6-cylinder Scania DC9 engines which are used in most Scania L94 buses/chassis.
Scania used to use 6-cylinder engines until around 2005-2006 where they now use Euro 4/5 5-cylinder DC9 engines for their K230/K250/K270/K310/K320/K360 buses/chassis.

5 cylinder didnt become common until mercedes launched the 240 3,0 i 1975 . Audi and volkswagen have had their 5-cylinder for many years . Actuallys , volvos 5-cylinder diesel came from Audi . The gasolinepowered 5-cylinder are derived from the the 3-liters 6-cylinder engine that were powering the 960 . Thats a genuine swedish product .

The GM design 5-cylinder was garbage from everything I'd ever heard about it. Lots of problems.
Frankly I'm not sure why they don't use the straight-5 in motorcycles. Since it's been some time that cylinder sleeves were used, today with the hard coating on alloy cylinder bores, the cylinders can be spaced closely together and reduce overall engine block width. I'd estimate that a square or under-square 5-cylinder wouldn't be much wider than a over-squared 1L racing bike 4-cylinder these days. Overlapping firing, cool sound, smoother than a 4, unique. BMW made a straight-6 and it's not stupidly wide, so I can see a straight-5 would work fine.
By the way, VisioRacer, I've been to the Minnesota grounds where all of these unique engines and steam exhibitions are held. It's an awesome experience. If you ever get to the States, plan to visit that exhibition for 2 or 3 days. You'll love it.

0.8-0.5 miles per gallon for that Russian tank. Let's see how that compares:
For comparison, at 37,000 feet and typical weight of around 300,000 pounds/136,300 kg, at 550 mph/Mach 0.80/900 km/h, a Boeing 767 burns around 9000 pounds per hour of Jet A. I know this because I fly this plane at that weight and altitude all the time.
That works out to 1343 gallons per hour, or around 2.44 gallons per mile. 2.44 gallons per mile is 0.409 miles per gallon.
That Russian tank is NOT very efficient; Then again I don't think the Russians care about such things...
