This video has been a life saver! I took on the task of reupholstering my front seats in my 66 this weekend and I would have been lost without this video. The passenger seat is done (slightly imperfectly, but still looks great) and the driver’s seat is almost done. I’ve been leaning on wires in the driver seat for years, so it’s going to be amazing to have new foam (and vinyl) on my seat.
This is a good tutorial video. i watched many times before and during my rework. heres some tips: 1 invest in a good pair of hog ring pliers AND cutters. common wire cutters will not work removing your missed hog rings 2 consider getting straight handle hog ring pliers, the angled units dont work well 3 get an extra set of hands to help, compressing foam and getting to the wires is tiring and frustrating 4 take care when ringing down the listing wires, they can tear out of the thin material TMI used to hold them in place 5 as stated, put material out is sun to soften, it makes stretching easier 6 be prepared to give your hands and forearms a workout, the sport foam is not easy to work with 7 consider hiring a pro to do it, what is your time worth? i hate upholstery work, i'm in the middle of this now, so i will keep going. probably never do this again.
A couple of tips. Put your new vinyl covers out in the sun for a good hour or more, it softens the material and easier to work with. 2. use plastic grocery bags, or a dry-cleaning back, pulled over the foam, them the vinyl slips into place really easy.
Thanks for this awesome video. Must have watched it 10 times during my install. I have no experience installing upholstery. Your 22 minute video made me a pro. Got my pony upholstery and seat cushions installed in my 64 1/2 Mustang and I don't think the pro's could have done a better job. Your video covers everything but the rear seats but they are a breeze to install. I added a couple layers of quilting fabric to the rear seat bottom and it turned out AWESOME! Saved me $550!
Watching this makes me want to hire this out. Finally picked up a set of Sport II foams and covers. I had been wanting these since they came out with the original set, then the II looked even better. I've been working on this car that long. I need seat backs also I see...
just finished mine! looks awesome! did driver seat in couple hours by myself, turned out very well! it did tear a bit on the passenger seat upper, wow its tight going over the corners with the oem foam at the top. vinyl glue did wonders, lucky it was on the back near the seat back
The original canvas is there to protect the factory upholstery during installation. It is not needed with the new upholstery so if it is in good shape you can keep it, if not throw it away. The springs are not really replaceable, I have seen various to repair them but none are really a good solution. If they still move freely and are not rusted out and broken they will be fine. We have done a few seats where they are so badly rusted they fall apart in our hands so we have to replace the frame.
Thorough presentation. I have one question though: what is holding the seat foam to the frame? Is it not necessary to first hog ring the embedded listing wire in the foam to the paper wrapped listing wire in the seat frame? And then, attach the upholstery hog ringing the listing wire in the upholstery to the listing wire in the foam? Please advise . Thanks Ace
Here's a tip...don't fold over the bolsters or edges until you've completely hog ringing the center listing channels. The foam will compress enough for you to fold over the edges. Finish off by steaming the inside of the vinyl to soften it and reduce wrinkles.
We are replacing the upholstery in our 65’ Mustang and are having a hard time with the hog rings! I noticed the tool you are using is angled. Do you think that works better than the straight tool? Thanks!
Do they make a kit for the bench seat? This seat sounds like it's the perfect seat for me, but I don't want to loose the bench seat but there's duck tape holding it together
Any ideas how to install the seat backs? The new clips are shorter and the old clips are junk. I easily did the whole job but can’t get the backs to install. I’m putting these in my f 100 so the backs will never be seen, but it’s still driving me insane!
The only feedback I have is that when you attach the back frame to the bottom frame, it might be way tighter that what you had on the show. Mine was so tight I had to use a lot of force to make it work. That unfortunately ripped the upholstery. TIP: use a lot of heavy duty duck tape to protect your upholstery. Not your fault, lesson learned on my part.
The back seat is a lot easier since there is no large bolsters to stretch the material over. You simply hog ring it to the seat frame just like the factory
We do not sell them as an assembled seat since they use your original frames. If you wanted new frames, foam, and upholstery we could build them for you in our shop. If you are interested give us a call and ask for Dan in Service
I have what appears to be 68 seats in my 65. They have seat back locks on them and the tag on the frame says Oct 67. I assume that makes them early 68. Do you just remove the locks or what?
Doing this for the first time on a 68 torino and have a few questions 1. Do I have to install new canvas and horse hair? What the heck is it for anyway?? 2. How do you determine if the springs are still good? I assume you can get new springs. Thanks.
Just asking, never reupholstered etc ...but would you not bead blast, clean up and repair the seat frame when so much effort is involved in restoring the seat ? Is there a down side to doing such to the frame or was this just for the instructional video ? Grateful for the lesson ....
Video is not clear how the foam and covers are being held to the frame. What is being connected with the hog rings? Are the listing rods being attached to the frame, other rods in the frame, or to the foam?
I just bought SportXR upholstery and it comes with listing wires. it has 2 long (17inch) , 6 medium (13inch), and 4 small (12ich) the seats dont come with any instructions ans I cant tell listing channels from other fabric.
Maybe this is a stupid question, Does the hog ring attached to a wire within the cushioning (foam) or are the hog rings just grabbing onto foam or they grabbing onto metal framing of the seat springs behind the foam?
Do you guys sell rear seat foam for a 1968 coupe? I bought a full TMI deluxe sport R interior and would like to have new rear seat foam to install with my new upholstery, however your website only lists seat foam for fastback models.
You first should connect (all) the hogrings, the top and the siderings, and then flip over the top and sidematerial with a heatblower to make the material soft. Then you don´t get this ugly pleats I still see at your project. I am doing this for already 30 years, re-made seats for porsche and old cars. but in Europe we have other standards I guess. good luck !
I am really finding it hard to pierce the foam with the hog ring, along with the listing wire, and pushing it all the way through to the frame. Anybody have secrets?
As was suggested above, use zip ties. I came up with this idea years ago and it worked wonders. The previous commenter said to just use them to get started, but in my opinion, they are a permanent solution. I don’t think zip ties existed “back in the day”. Regardless, I suspect hog rings are faster in a factory production environment, which may be why they’re not OE.
When you are putting the hog rings into the foam, are you ringing it onto the frame of the seat? Also if you buy the sport r seats do they come with new hog rings and seat backing clips?
Isn't replacing the seat cheaper and better for longevity? Not trying to be an ass, but if your changing the seat to your wants, then the car isn't original. Wouldn't putting anything nice but cheaper do the trick? This is asked, due to my having a 69 and trying to do a resto-mod as inexpensive as I can. I'm new to this, just have a passion. Can someone help?
It is not necessary to blast and paint the frames, it is not an overlooked step, if they are that bad replace them...Nothing like spending time and money for no reason...
Seat foam doesn’t hold up even afte a month and the car hasn’t been driven so I’d stay away from TMI brand. Terrible customer service as they don’t replay to email or answer their phones so I’d look somewhere else for an interior. There are others that will actually communicate... thumbs down on TMI
Please email me at bill @ cjpony parts. com about this situation. I have used TMI for many years without issue, if a product failed in a month without use I would like to know more details. Thank you
oh these are fun to do...not. Literally the lamest job to do in the upholstery trade that I've ever encountered. Mustangs suck, Camaro even worse. get ready for early arthritis. these kits from Classic Industries or TMI never fit right even after hours of wresting and fighting and stretching to the point stitches are tearing, and after all that work and time they still look like wrinkled garbage and will leave you unsatisfied. I wont be taking on those jobs ever again. aftermarket kits are complete crap!
You guys are awesome, your videos make my build a reality, 0 experience mechanic and thanks to you I allways finish my instalations.
Great to hear!

i hate upholstery work, i'm in the middle of this now, so i will keep going. probably never do this again.
Very nice video. I usually remove the rust from the metal seat frames and paint them so they hold up better.
Looks like a great winter project cuz im sure this would take me like 3 months with lost Boss Hog rings and pliers being flung across the garage 🤠
A couple of tips. Put your new vinyl covers out in the sun for a good hour or more, it softens the material and easier to work with.
2. use plastic grocery bags, or a dry-cleaning back, pulled over the foam, them the vinyl slips into place really easy.
I'm doing a custom build and have always liked this era of Mustang seats. Thanks to your video I have enough to build off of.
Glad I could help

I had a 1965 mustang SC (southern california) with a soft top,785 Fairlane engine in a buff-orangey color with white upholstery. I loved that car.
Just a trick I used if you have weak hands you can use zip ties to help you get the material pulled into place and then hog ring them.
Watching this makes me want to hire this out. Finally picked up a set of Sport II foams and covers. I had been wanting these since they came out with the original set, then the II looked even better. I've been working on this car that long.

why weren't the frames painted for a much better look, can of black Rustoleum would have done wonders!!
Would make the video longer and if you tackle this kind of project its common scense.
Dah?
That's not there point here.
Please
@@kikesocceraz no it wouldn’t make the video longer, unless they showed him doin it🤣🤣
Is there any benefits to replacing the wire frames? Basically the whole seat? Or should I keep old frame?
Well done guys you made it look simple but still to hard for me I think I will find a proffessonal to do mine
The original canvas is there to protect the factory upholstery during installation. It is not needed with the new upholstery so if it is in good shape you can keep it, if not throw it away. By far the hardest part of this job is putting the seat back cover on. These guys totally gloss it over.
Do this out in the sun on a nice warm day if possible.
That was my thought the whole time, I would think heating up the vinyl material would make it easier but just a guess
I wish they explained how to install the seat foam and seat foam listing wires. Completely skipped a really important step
Thanks Ace
That was a great tutorial!!! Can't wait to re do my seats thanks!!!
Great video but background music is awful.
Here's a tip...don't fold over the bolsters or edges until you've completely hog ringing the center listing channels. The foam will compress enough for you to fold over the edges. Finish off by steaming the inside of the vinyl to soften it and reduce wrinkles.
Also, see if you can rent or purchase a pneumatic hog ring tool. Doing it by hand sucks
Good tutorial, I will do mine tomorrow.
How did the install go?
CJ Pony Parts it went great.
We are replacing the upholstery in our 65’ Mustang and are having a hard time with the hog rings! I noticed the tool you are using is angled. Do you think that works better than the straight tool? Thanks!
Is the foam hog-ringed to the frame first? And do the hog-rings holding the cover down going around the foam listing wire and the frame?
Do they make a kit for the bench seat? This seat sounds like it's the perfect seat for me, but I don't want to loose the bench seat but there's duck tape holding it together
Any ideas how to install the seat backs? The new clips are shorter and the old clips are junk. I easily did the whole job but can’t get the backs to install. I’m putting these in my f 100 so the backs will never be seen, but it’s still driving me insane!

Jethro Seghers where do you put the tape?
The back seat is a lot easier since there is no large bolsters to stretch the material over. You simply hog ring it to the seat frame just like the factory
sorry if this was mentioned already - but, why not replace that old rust seat frame while you are at it?
Ben of Peterson Restorations?
Don Smith yes it is, he used to work for CJs when he started out.
@@cjponyparts Thought that was him! He's a star now..lol

Dumb question- why wasn't the burlap replaced? wont the springs cut through the foam per-maturely?
The premium foams have a coating on them which makes the burlap pretty much not needed any longer but you can install it if you want to.
Doing this for the first time on a 68 torino and have a few questions 1. Do I have to install new canvas and horse hair? What the heck is it for anyway?? 2. How do you determine if the springs are still good? I assume you can get new springs. Thanks.
Is there any mustang place that I can buy yardage of vinyl that matches the stock seat vinyl?
I hog ringed my seat foam to the seat base springs first. Keep it a bit more secure.
Just asking, never reupholstered etc ...but would you not bead blast, clean up and repair the seat frame when so much effort is involved in restoring the seat ? Is there a down side to doing such to the frame or was this just for the instructional video ?
Grateful for the lesson ....
If your frame needs it by all means clean it up and paint it before you assemble the seat.
Video is not clear how the foam and covers are being held to the frame. What is being connected with the hog rings? Are the listing rods being attached to the frame, other rods in the frame, or to the foam?

Maybe this is a stupid question, Does the hog ring attached to a wire within the cushioning (foam) or are the hog rings just grabbing onto foam or they grabbing onto metal framing of the seat springs behind the foam?
They grab into the wire that is embedded in the foam.
Do you guys sell rear seat foam for a 1968 coupe? I bought a full TMI deluxe sport R interior and would like to have new rear seat foam to install with my new upholstery, however your website only lists seat foam for fastback models.
It's only offered for fastbacks at this time. The only rear package is the new XR which is custom rear buckets with foam.
Now they just need to make these for 67-68 cougars
Hi, by any chance does tmi have the foam for rear seats. I have a 1972 mustang coupe and the bottom of the rear seat is pretty beat up.
Challenge accepted im buying me a kit!
Nice video.

Surely. Just give Tim a call at (717) 724-8795 and you can set up an appointment with our shop.
+CJ Pony Parts where is your shop?
Lol I wouldn't bother because it looks hard =(
Agree. Very labor intensive process.
Can you use the same techniques for the back seats also?
buenisimo soy aficionado a la tapiceria de carro
Do you have packages for 67 cougar
So do you hog ring the foam to the seat frame
Would it be okay to use carpet pad instead of a burlap sack???
+Troy Monsen I never tried but you want something between the upholstery and the metal. It has to be thin or the upholstery may not fit.
When you are putting the hog rings into the foam, are you ringing it onto the frame of the seat? Also if you buy the sport r seats do they come with new hog rings and seat backing clips?
Hog rings go into the listing wires that are in the foam. The clips and rings are not included.
Thank you sir. Just planning my project.
So my listing channel for the lower seat is sewn closed, why did it come like this?
+Troy Monsen Probably a mistake? should be easy enough to fix
So you can't get new springs?? Crap. I have a few that are broken in half. Maybe I'll weld them, although that will create a brittle point.
a job well done
Do they sell seat covers original type for a 99 mustang gt 35th anniversary edition.
good job
Will the 67 seats fit the 2017?
is this not available anymore?
We many options from TMI on our website.
Why all the crummy music?
Can I buy a per assembled sport seat 2?

Yes we offer upholstery for the Bronco on our website.
