Hi Michael! I just saw your video and it was really accurate and helpful. I recently bought a Yi 4k and I'm starting to understand how to use it properly. Video making is not easy! Thanks for your help! I subscribed, keep up the good job! Greetings from Italy
Dude, I have watched dozens of videos on this camera. Your explanations have to be hands down the best and clearest on issues that actually matter! Subbed
I like the way you asked for a like at the end of the video, so i gave a like and also subscribed. You made a lot of good points. I shoot on 2k to get the highest resolution without the lens distortion.
Great tutorial! I just got my Yi 4K today! I immediately updated to the latest firmware, you can now shoot ultra wide 2.7K with lens distortion correction. As for the metering, what is the advantage of average compared to center-weighted? I guess you set it to center if you really want what is just in the center to be in focus?
Thank you! You're close. Metering doesn't deal with focus. It controls how the camera exposes the image(how it controls brightness and darkness), but you are kinda right. Center weight looks at the center of the image and decides on what the brightness needs to be, based on how bright or dark the center is. Average looks at the entire frame measures the total brightness and darkness and puts it somewhere in the middle. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!
yeah same problem with the particles! Got them all dialed up but still there is video noise. Day videos are great but its definitely not for low or night videos in my experience anyways.
I agree - certainly not a good low light camera. I limit mine to 1600 iso. Even that is pushing it, but there are times where I had no choice. Been using it to capture footage while riding my motorcycle though. Looks pretty decent
I turn of the EIS almost all the time. Not really that good on the Yi but the rest of the camera is outstanding. Check out some test footage on my channel... Good video. Cheers..
Read somewhere if using electronic image stabilization in video and then again using EIS in say final cut pro etc edit, the result may be amplified liquid jello effect? Great vid btw, also great kid and parenting skills!
Unfortunately that's not what I've seen. If you watch my new video th-cam.com/video/7WSFkNzIbU0/w-d-xo.html. I used IS and turned off distortion, and if you look closely, you'll still see the jello effect. It's around the 4:55 mark
Michael Turner you're using ultraview? That distorts everything. I shoot at 2.7k/60 with no ultraview, lens distortion off and electronic stabilization on and looks fine.
What's your thoughts for indoor basketball video settings? I can't seem to get the 4K dialed in. I usually use 1080p @60 but the pictures are not real clear.
I typically shoot in 2k 60p mode since it allows me to correct for lens distortion and also lets me to shoot with a medium field of view when needed. Also I take the ISO out of auto and set it to 1600 for indoors. That may squeeze out a little more performance for you. Have you given that a shot?
Same as what i said in the video. I think stabilization would probably look bad. Your shots would more than likely look like jello. It would only work on 2k mode anyway, but try it and see if it is acceptable to you. If not turn off the stabilization and shoot in 2k.
I use the lens distortion correction that is built into the Yi and it works fine. It does not work in 4k mode though. You'll have to fix the distortion in post for that.
Hey there, great video and I also use the yi 4k and the same case. I also noticed the quality looks like crap when smudged. However, i'm using it on a motorcycle, any other case that's better thans what we use? Also, any tips on rendering how to get the best quality file for youtube? Got a vid on my channel. Again, nice video! 👍
Sorry, I haven't used any other cases. When exporting to TH-cam , i use the a preset in premiere. Target and maximun bitrate are set to 16Mbps. Hope that helps.
@@MichaelWTurner vegas 16. During ride i got a problem with exposure too, the dash becomes too dark or the skies get too overexposed. Haha th-cam.com/video/Gv1NG3RU73E/w-d-xo.html
i found a gimbal for the yi 4k online and I think by turning the eis off and use the gimbal instead you could get an incredible good stabilized image. the downside is that this gimbal costs about the same as the camera itself. but maybe you wanna check it out: YI 3-axis Handheld Stabilizer
Thank you. I agree, I don't really like the stabilization built into this camera. I much rather leave it off. I'm thinking of purchasing the zhiyun smooth q. It;'s a little cheaper and most people swear by zhiyun. the only issue is may even pony up a few more buck and get the zhiyun m, so I can also use it with my GH4. It's like double the price of the q though. I'm seriously cheap man. It's always hard for me to pull the trigger.
i think the footage on the zhiyun smooth q is still relatively shaky but the zhiyun m footage looks incredible even though i don't think a gimbal should cost more than the camera
Hi michael, nice video beautiful boy. What do you think is beter fot tennis maches settings in the day? And is thete difference for evening or night settings? Thanks
I would simply set the iso to either auto or 100 iso. Auto is probably better especially if it cloudy. I would also set the white balance to auto for the same reason. Theses settings are for the day. And if I remember correctly you can set a max ISO. I would set that for 1600 and keep it in auto even at night. Past 1600 everything looks pretty crappy IMO.
Hey, Michael, loved this video. What do you think about using the Yi 4K in studio? Would settings be any different in that situation? Not moving, just on a tripod.
Sorry-- the settings you use here in the video for the outdoor shots with the Yi. I know the camera is geared for motion, but if stationary in a studio setting, will the settings need to be any different from the videos here? Here in the video you said it didn't matter much between center weighted and average metering, but then you talked about having a background and that making a difference. I think you also mention medium sharpness is what you preferred, but would that be the same in studio, stationary? You also mentioned ISO 400 since you were shooting outdoors, but I imagine that would be different in studio, but I plan on tinkering with that anyway. Thanks!
In general, you always want to have the iso as low as it can go to get the best image out of the yi, so that is 400 iso. In a studio that is lit well, it should work. In my experience medium sharpness looks best, but that is a subjective thing, you may prefer high. Low always looks bad. image quality always should be set to high. I'm not sure, you'll see much difference with the metering setting unless the background in your studio is black or white. If that was the case I might use center weighted metering. That should be a good starting point for you.
allways set image sharpness to low. then add sharpness in post. most cameras dont handle sharpness well compared to editing software, like adobe, Vegas, final cut and so on. set iso to Max 400 allways, instead set shutterspeed to auto. shutterspeed will then handle the exposure, which gives less grain in low light.
I have an apeman A77 don’t laugh any way the video is a little grainy, I have it on 1080P 60 per second, and the exsposure 00. Not many options on this camera, and the photo resaloution, 16 MP Wide,4640 by 3480, what ever all this mean🇨🇦

I totally agree with you. I was trying to show what the video looks like without use of gimbal. I have gimbal and will be doing a video about the yi with use of a gimbal in the very near future.
Michael Turner great review. I will be waiting for the next video about the gimbal. I also got a gimbal and recomend it to everyone. It is a must to improve your shots. I never used the eis without the gimbal because of the jello effect but with the gimbal, the eis is ok to be on because it reduces anu possible bumps you might hitbut because the gimbal reduces shaking so much already there is no jello effect. I am interested to see what witll be your review on the subject. Cheers
