  • This easy DIY tutorial will show you how to make a dishwasher safe, microwave safe, long lasting, and adorable watercolor inspired mug. If you've seen the nail polish version of this, please know that nail polish is flammable, so if you ever want to reheat your coffee...well, good luck. Watch this! It's so simple!

    Finally, someone who understands that finger nail polish doesn't belong on a food surface!! THANK YOU. I have used the porcelain 150 for a while but could not figure out how to make it do the water color effect. I wouldn't have thought of the Vitrea would have solved my conundrum. I volunteer at a farmers market in the "Kids Corner"( it's a 'art' booth) and i have had a TON of people asking me about a SAFER way to do this. Now, because of your creativity, i can do the project with a clear conscious. A HUGE cyber Hug from me and the kids (and parents) from our little farmers market.

    Thank you for this video! Watched lots of the ones with nail polish and just had a very bad feeling about that ... So glad to see this version! I do have one question: would it be safe to use this on the inside of the mug, where it comes in contact with food/beverages? Thank you

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Panda Panakal Oooooh. That is a GOOD question! I am not totally sure... I would *think* it would be okay since it would be okay to eat off of a plate with the same paint... But I wouldn't microwave anything in it if it's a situation where the food/liquid would touch the paint... Does that make sense?

    Just to clarify 325F oven temp is 170c or 150 fan oven, that is a low temp NOT high as some think.

    Hello,
    I have a question I hope you can/will answer. I want to do this but first put adhesive vinyl under it so that I can paint and then remove the vinyl to have the words show through in white.
    Does the ink pretty well dry before you put it in the oven? I wouldn't want to put the mug with the vinyl still on it in the oven, but also don't want the ink to smudge when I remove the vinyl.
    thanks!

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alicia C The paint has to sit at room temp for 24 hours, it's dry when it goes in the oven. I'd love to see how it turns out!

    Hi there,
    this is amazing. what i like is that it can last very long. But the problem is that my oven cannot go up to that high temperature, is baking it necessary to bake? or is there a way that i can bake longer with a lower temperature?? really looking forward to ur reply, thx ^^

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mish C According to the instructions, you have to bake at 325 in order to set the paint and make it permanent. I'm not sure that baking longer at a lower temperature would set the paint. From what I understand, at 325, the original glaze on the mug becomes porous and allows the paint to sink in. Then, when it's cool, it's set into the original glaze. If you try it at a lower temp and have success I'd love to hear about it! Good luck!

    Hi! Where I live I can't get Pebeo's Vitrea. What would happen if I used ceramic paint for my mugs? Have you ever tried it? If I used whatever medium the instructions say to use in order to create the marble effect, do you think it would work just like alcohol does with Vitrea? Thanks!

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think that would work. I would use whatever the instructions say to use as a cleanup method, though. That's why I used alcohol for the vitrea to create the marbled effect. I think there is a transparent medium available that you could use as well. Just don't mix it up all the way. I'd love to see when you're done! :)

    Can you put the paint in a water tub to make the marble effect?

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grace Nelson Try it! I used alcohol because it kinda repels the paint and intensifies the watercolor effect. Water could make it cloudy but I've never tried it. I'd love to hear how it goes!

  • @wanlin704
    @wanlin704 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for posting this! But I'm not sure if I should put acrylic sealer on it after baking? Or the baking process is to make the colour lasts longer?

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No need to apply anything. When you bake the mug, the clear glaze that's already on it soaks up the glass/ceramic paint. So when it dries, it's sealed in that factory glaze. I've had these mugs for over two years and they look exactly the same as they did on day one. Just make sure you use glass or ceramic paint meant for baking.

      Another brand, maybe but if you want your mug to be dishwasher safe, non-toxic, non-flammable and long lasting - then you have to use the right paint. Bake-able glass or ceramic paint.

    can you use china mugs in the oven? What is the material of these mugs on the video? Also im worried about putting the mug in the oven when it has rubbing alcohol! im just worried something will explode!

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never tried actual China in the oven, so I am not sure. The mugs in the video are ceramic. The rubbing alcohol evaporates very quickly - this is actually part of how the watercolor effect is achieved. I've made these several times using this method and never had a problem. Just make sure you are using glass or ceramic paint.

    Hello, the porcelain paint I'm using won't be repelled by the rubbing alcohol at all, it just makes it very runny, what can I do to make it work?

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What does the container say to use for clean-up of the product? I'd try whatever that is. The glass paint I use says to clean up using alcohol, so that's how I found out that this would work this way.

    • @hannahwhitaker1277
      @hannahwhitaker1277 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hearts and Sharts it doesn't say anything about how to rub it off but using rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad manages to wipe it off. However, it does not repel at all when dropped onto the paint.

    • @Heartsandsharts
      @Heartsandsharts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hannah Whitaker Hmm. Try diluting the paint in a separate container with the alcohol and then try it on the mug. I think I had to thin mine a little bit since it was so thick.

      @hannahwhitaker1277 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Missy Murray Sharpies are definitely safer than nail polish but they don't last very long. I've had these mugs for three years now and they look the exact same. I did another video using paint pens and tested several kinds of pens on a mug and used it for a while to see what would last. www.heartsandsharts.com/easy-diy-mothers-day-mug/ It will "work", but it won't last.

      I've only tried the Vitrea for this, but I think as long as it's permanent glass paint that you bake, it should be fine. I have used the sharpie paint pens for other mugs and they didn't do well. A year later they are all chipping.
